Dr. M's Reinventing The Wheel Edition (PAL to NTSC+) (Released)
Time
@ segaflip: Could you (or anyone who else has the artwork he posted) please repost the artwork (covers and discs) for this set? I was able to download Empire, so I'd like to at least print off a nice label for the dvd.

If anybody else would be kind enough to seed (on demonoid) ANH and ROTJ I'd greatly apprecite it. I have a pretty fast connection and was able to download Empire in less then 2 days using uTorrent, so I don't think you'd have to seed it for very long. I'm sitting at 12% for both movies and not progressing at all. If anybody could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

What it was like to experience Star Wars for the first time in 1977.
Time
As I was 2 months old when Star Wars first opened in 1977 (I was born in March), I was obviously waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to young to see it in the theater. My first experience with the Star Wars universe was when I was 3 years old in 1980 when Empire came out. My dad took me to see it a few days after it opened.

The theater in my home town was a 2 screen theater and had all these lightbulbs underneath the entrence. I didn't understand how theaters worked and thought Star Wars owned the theater (because of the lightbulbs for some reason). For a couple years I thought it was how it worked and movies owned theaters and then rented it out to other movies. Sorta funny.

Anyway, when my dad took me to see Empire in 1980, I was just blown away. I don't know how much I understood the plot and all, but I got Luke as good and Vader was bad. Like most kids, I was just amazed at the special effects. I don't remember the crowds reaction that much.

After I saw Empire, they were playing Star Wars up on campus (at the Penn State University) and since my dad worked there we got in for free. Anyway, Star Wars blew me away as well, the crowd loved it too (remember this was before video tapes became popular so they haven't seen it in a few years). Since then, I was infatuated with the Star Wars Universe and had to have all the toys I could have. I had a pretty big opperation when I was 4 and my grandparents bought me a huge set with all the action figures and a remote controlled mini R2-D2. I still remember walking around the hospital playing with it. Man, I wish my grandparents bought 2 sets of each so we could have stored one of them LOL.

I went and saw ANH in '97 on opening night. It was a packed theater with all college kids (I was in highschool at the time). I think the same lady was at that screening rennervision, b/c a bunch of girls went "Awww" at that scene also. The crowd laughed their asses off at Luke's "power-converter" line. I don't remember that much else about the screening, but the crowd did love it and cheered when Luke blew up the death star. I remember thinking though when Han shot 2nd, WTF!?! I didn't mind the other changes but thought Jaba looked aweful, though I did like the scene except for Han stepping on the tail. I didn't see Empire or Jedi SE's in the theater though so it must have said something in my sub-conscious.

I'd go with Maul for Ep I and then change the text from green to red. I think that'd look a lot better.

HDTV resolutions
Time
OK, I've owned a HDTV for a few years now and have loved mine (it's a Mitsu 55711 reso 1920x1080i). Recently though, I was shopping one for my brother and have somewhat gotten confused by the various resolutions that are available for HDTV sets. I've thought all along sets advertising at 720p were worse then sets at 1080i. But then I read somewhere that a 1080i picture can look just as good on a 720p set. I also see sets that accept the 1080p signal, but aren't native 1920x1080p. That's basically upconverting right? So what's your guys takes on the various resolutions for HDTV sets? What's generally the better resolutions?

first viewing of the 2006 OOT dvds
Time
OK, WTF is going on here?

Oh... one other thing this morning. You know how we were complaining a few months back that the original versions of the Star Wars films (due on 9/12) were going to look less than stellar in 15-year old, non-anamorphic, laserdisc-transfer quality video on DVD? A few thousand fans finally got a look at them at the Lucasfilm presentation at Comic-Con on Friday afternoon. Lucasfilm's Steve Sansweet had this to say to the assemblage: "The transfers from the bonus discs are absolutely incredible, because these are pristine master tapes, and I have NEVER seen - despite what you may have heard on Internet rumors - a better transfer of a movie."

I'm still not getting my hopes up, but taking a wait and see approach. I just a straight answer at this point. Jeez.

Initially, I thought so too. I thought that LFL was using these discs to see if anyone would buy the OOT and then maybe they would remaster it for the 30th anniversary boxed set. Now, well, I'm not so sure. Apart from Sanwseet (who is really just parraoting what the higher-ups tell him anyway), there seem to be other signs. "We have no plans, now or in the future, to restore the earlier versions." And then there are all of the comments being made about how the real prouduct is the SE and this release is for people who don't care which versions they get and don't want to buy the boxed set (which makes absolutely no sense). Then there are Lucas's comments, however. "It's just the original versions as they were. We didn't do anything to them at all (No, you bloody well didn't.). We're not sure how many people want that. Now we'll find out whether people really wanted the originals, or whether they wanted the mproved versions. It will all come out in the end." So many people are probably going to avoid this release, that Lucas can easily say, "See? There is no demand for the original versions." And even if they do sell well, it doesn't gaurantee anything. He could just as easily say that now the minority who wanted the OOT have what they've wanted. We're passionate, but we're a minority (though perhaps a growing minority). Maybe all of the passion in the world can't change the fact that 2+2=4. Maybe Ozkeeper's brutally honest pessimistic/realistic post just rattled me. But this looks like the final nail in the coffin for OOT fans. Lucas appears to have won. There is the ray of hope of the discs well and the 30th anniversary. But my optimism is waning at this point. I guess that all we can do now is cross our fingers. I'm not giving up, but at this point, I just don't know what to do.

What's he going to say? "I'm releasing this crappy set with the OOT to persuade people who never bought the 2004 sets (since I have so many sitting in storage unsold), but just know there's a better set coming in a few months for the 30th anni." That's going to persuade a lot of people to buy them. The thing I look at this is the timing of it all. If this was the last set ever released, why wouldn't he wait till the 30th anni in a few months? It makes no sense to me other then they have a bunch of unsold 2004's sitting in storage and this is a new way to get rid of them. That's all. There should be a line on some gambling site on the chances of the uber set being released next year for the 30th anni, which I'm still banking on that happening.

I agree exactly.

The main thing I'm looking at this as is the timing of it all. It makes no sense to me to release the never to be sold again OOT in september when next year will be the 30th Anniversery. If this is the only version we'll see of the OOT on DVD, wouldn't he wait a few months later and release them on the 30th Anni? I think we could see a new uber box set (I'm hoping the PT and 2004's will be fixed along with the anamorphic widescreen format OOT) next year. One can dream anyway.

Wow Falle, hope this teaches you to backup your work (once on your hard drive and another time on a cd/dvd would be best). You have really nice work man and shouldn't trust your host will always be on top of things. I have no idea if you're a student or work for a living, but if you want to go into graphic design in the future this is work you definitely want to show off. You have really great stuff man, I'd hate to see you lose it all (no matters who's fault it is, yours or the hosts).

The Emmy's (2006)
Time
The nominations.

The one snub I have the most problem with is Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) for best supporting actress. She was just awesome this season (& in the 1st as well) and it's such a shame shows like BSG and their actors don't get recognized. The show took a dip in the 2nd half of the season (2.5) so I don't have a problem with it being left off the list. It should have won an emmy for it's 1st season though.

Regarding other shows, while I love 24 (have since Day 1 Hour 1), it can't come close to BSG and while this season was definitely one of the funnest, just isn't close in terms of quality. However I was really happy Jean Smart got nominated for 24 as she was just fantastic this season and if Mary can't win (or nominated for that matter) I really hope she does.

While I enjoy House, it shouldn't win either for best drama. They've all been stand alone eps, no season long story lines (that have really mattered IMO). And it's all the same formula: someone gets sick, they think they figure out what the problem is, oh my, they didn't get it right, comes down to the last minute and then they save him/her. However, I thought Hugh Laurie should have been nominated for best actor. He is great. I really hope though Dennis Leary wins for Rescue Me, that should have been nominated for best drama series as well.

I'm so glad The Office (it better win) got nominated and Steve Carell did as well. He and the show is just awesome. By far the best sitcom on TV hands down. I'm disappointed Jenna Fischer didn't get nominated, she should have for actress in a comedy series. I'm very disappointed Entourage didn't get nominated, as that's just as bit as good as The Office is. And Jeremy Piven is just awesome as Ari, he should have been nominated as well.

Stupid Emmy's. They never can get anything right can they? This is why I don't pay attention to award shows, they're all politics. Mary McDonnell is the biggest snub in the enteries, IMO.
