Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

The Blues Brothers was announced today on BluRay with the Theatrical Version and Extended Version.   That's what annoys me about the bullshit excuse of its 'too expensive' to restore the OOT, EVERY studio is doing it, so it can't be THAT expensive!

 Now, CO- stop being ridiculous.

Blue Brothers is probably the most famous movie ever- at least in the top 5.  And not only famous- but it has spawned 5 sequels, several TV shows, thousands of comics, underoos, trading cards, action figures, radio programmes, special editions, lunch boxes, a pseudo-Religion, conventions, T-shirts, shampoo bottles, video games, theme park rides, making-of books, collectible statues, fan films, etc.  It nearly rivals Midnight Cowboy in the intensity at which its fanbase supports and worships this film.

You just can't expect the same treatment for a little movie like Star Wars, so stop using such overblown hyperbole.

Well, I know at least one fan who isn't wondering:

Jedi Temple34 says:

I am pleased that the Star Wars BluRay set will feature DTS audio, rather than the infinitely inferior Dolby True-HD. At last, Star Wars as it was meant to be heard! In glorious, crystal-clear, DTS!

Yes, that sounds just like JT34.  I once thought I heard him say that he didn't like DTS, but I heard that clip in lossless audio, so I'm pretty sure it was garbled.  When I went back to listen to the clip in gloriously clear DTS, it much clearer that he said he looooved DTS.

It is actually kind of easy to anticipate the sort of thing you are likely to post at any given point in a topic.

Hey C3PX, did you know there is a forum option to turn off images?

 2 things.

#1 I run without images.

#2 I've learned to recognize ms. waggle eyes there by her guid.

RE: Subtitles

I don't think branching really works well enough for what you describe.  The crawl presents a unique opportunity to get in/get-out as far as the branching goes.  And the crawl is- what? 30 seconds?  What would be the total run time of all subtitled scenes in RotJ?  Assuming you have to do it scene-by-scene instead of shot-by-shot (due to the non-seamlessness of branching) you'd be looking at a substantial runtime.

Are subtitles not any better on BD?  I thought the increased resolution and raw computing power would allow for some nice anti-aliased/high res fonts for BD subs, but I don't think I've yet seen any subs on BD.

Regarding Xhonzi's question of whether or not we'd still pursue a proper release of the original if a replica of the original was made with newly composited special effects. Absolutely I would. I wouldn't even bother spending money on a set that only replicated the look of the original.

Judge me how you will:

This whole conversation has made me realize that while I feel and understand the need to preserve these films as they were, I care MORE about my being able to enjoy them.  The SEs don't offend me so much because they're not the original versions, but because they are terrible.  They took something that was good enough, and tried to improve it- instead they weighed it down with goofiness and camp.

It offends me because its UNWATCHABLE more than because it is NOT ORIGINAL.

So something that had the story and goofiness changes undone (which is most of them) and looked like the original would satisfy me personally.  Could you call it a restoration?  I suppose not, in the technical sense of that word.  Would I still say that the films should be restored?  Maybe.  But I can assume that I would be so busy watching an enjoyable version of the film that I wouldn't be here complaining about it.  Ady's ESB reconstruction is seriously good enough for me.  It saddens me that it's not widely available and is considered illegal by some.

Regarding Fink's comment about how many little changes have been made over the years. I guess to some of you we may come off as comically anal,

This is kind of my thought process.  To the outside world, we are an unsatiable group what will never be happy no matter what Lucas releases.  The GOUT was obviously meant as a slap to the face, so we took it that way and weren't satisfied.  But if something that looked and played like the originals was released- without it meeting every point on our list of demands, and we (the OOT demanding community) still demanded more-  Well, I can hear the response now.

So... call me a coward.  Call me selfish.  But I prioritize my own enjoyment of the trilogy over needs/wants of "film history".  Perhaps that makes me no better than someone who enjoys the SEs (except that I have taste) but it is what it is.

but tiny little changes here and there aren't that big of a deal to me, but completely redoing the special effects is not a tiny little change. That is a massive overhaul, even if it is done to resemble the original as closely as possible sans the "flaws".

We're still talking about recompositing original elements, right?

I'm also a realist, and if George Lucas is as much of a cold, calculating businessman as he seems, I imagine he'll release the UOT in a few years on Bluray to cash in on both those that demand the originals and those die-hard fans that will buy anything with 'Star Wars' written on it. The same as the GOUT.

Whether it'll be Blu-Ray quality though remains to be seen.

I think a small part of him- yet it remains to be large enough- is an idealist.  The kind of idealist that wants to supress the original versions of the films.

Hypothetical: What would you KEEP?

Edit: I am concerned, however, about such a radical capability as shapeshifting being introduced into the universe. I thought that maybe it could be limited to something a little more chamelion-like. A change in coloring, or course, and a "realistic" alteration of existing facial features.

That's a good point.  If there's one shapeshifter, there's probably a million.  Every military/intelligence outfit in the galaxy would be after these guys to recruit them/force them into obedience...

It's sort of like Clones, as I've mentioned somewhere else here...

Once you establish that there can be clones, why wouldn't they be EVERYWHERE?  Especially if you can clone whomever you like.  Everytime Mon Mothma appears, wouldn't you be at least a little suspicious that she's a clone?  Wouldn't replacing the Emperor with a Rebellion loyal clone be at the top of their to-do list?  If they didn't have any Emperor DNA from which to create a clone, wouldn't getting that DNA be at the top of their list?

Or replacing him with a shapeshifter?

Back to Mrebo's question (can I call you Max?)-

I wouldn't keep any of those characters, but that might just be me.  I didn't find Watto or Quigonn to be interesting or "Star Warsy" in the least.  005 used to run a Watto fansite, and I know a lot of members of this board have a spot for Quigonn... but in the words of Lina Lamont, "I can' stan' 'im."
