Creating the Worlds of Star Wars - 365 Days, by John Knoll (was: Millennium Falcon Exterior Sets)
Time

My page per day ratio is way down since getting into prequel territory (and work has been pretty busy) but here's a good bit:

On page 191: John Knoll said:

George once explained to me that throughout the six films, a red-to-gray progression occurs within the succession of Palpatine abodes.  The first time we see his office, in Episode I, it's totally red.  In Episode II, Palpatine's office has more grey in it: a grey desk, a grey floor.  In Episode III, the office has even less red.  Gradually the color is going away so that, eventually, the only color left will be embodied in the Red Guards.  If you look at the Emperor's throne room in Episode VI, it is an all grey-and-black environment.

I'll confess.  I think that's actually kind of cool.  Too bad George was focused on this stuff instead of actually making the movies enjoyable.

In other news today, the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has revealed its 1st Quarter 2011 Home Entertainment Report. From the DEG's press release, here are the salient highlights:

...

Comparing the first nine months of 3D TV sales to the first full year of HDTV sales, HIS Screen Digest noted that 3D TV adoption is outpacing HDTV adoption by 50 percent.

FutureSource projects that by 2015, 3D TVs will be in more than 60% of US households and 3D Blu-ray players will be in more than 75% of US households.

Important Red Heads in Geek Fiction

Complaints?  From my wife, or yours?

Yet?

My wife has told me several times that she'd like to dye her hair red, just for fun.  I've discouraged it in one of those "I love you just the way you are" ways... but it might be fun for a little bit.

To wit: she has two red wigs.  A longer one she used for her psuedo-Mara Jade costume two Halloweens ago.  And a shorter, orangier one that she used for April O'Neal last Halloween.

opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?

What are the benefits of the OT with recoposited elements (ie no matte-lines) but without any other upgrades? Could someone explain that?

Erm... didn't you just lay it out right there?

Frink and I appear to be in the minority here.  I don't suppose this will really help anyone understand, but...

#1. Preserve the movies as they were.  The movies were too influential to be lost to history (all 30 years of it so far) the way they have been.

#2. Why not let me enjoy my 1954 Mercedes 300 SL but with a few modern accotrements?  Lots of improvements have been made in the realms of fuel efficiency, air conditioning, tyres, GPS, whatever.  If I was ever lucky enough to own one of these babies, AND I DECIDED to DRIVE IT I would be less concerned with exact restoration and more concerned with my comfort and enjoyment.  I understand the ideas of restoration, really I do.  But I would rather enjoy myself.

#3 Back to the film- there are a lot of movies that have their theatrical version preserved and I think that is great.  I think it's important to film history (as important as film history is).  But I don't usually watch the theatrical version- given the chance.  I prefer what I subjectively decide is the "better" version in the examples of Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Daredevil, Superman 2, Chronicles of Riddick, Muppet Christmas Carol, and so on to quickly name some examples.

#4 If presented with an infinity of choices, I would watch 1977-1983 cuts of the movies with digital dirt/scratch removal, and improved/removed matte lines to watch

#5 And to let on a little secret- I like a lot of what Ady's done to SW.  It doesn't detract from my desire to see the originals released, but I would probably watch something that's 60% Ady and 40% original if given an infinity of choices.

#6 Finally- I wouldn't/don't watch the 1997, 2004 or 2011 SEs for frank enjoyment at any time.  I find them to be more frustrating than enjoyable.  Prior to finding something better than the TR47 discs I had for years, I simply didn't watch SW at all.

???

And, S_Matt,

Please refrain from using the words "anal" and "warts" so closely together.  Thank you.

In close ups, medium shots, and wide shots?
Close ups were a little better, but medium and long shots were more cut-outed. Mostly the medium shots, I can think of a couple with Thor and Odin in Asgard at the end that are pretty flat.

I actually took of my glasses on a couple shots on Earth when Thor and Jane are talking on the roof and it wasn't blurry at all.

Got it.  I would think the close ups would have been taken care of, and that the long shots would be hard to tell (per my question several posts ago- How 3D does someone 30 ft away appear?).  Medium shots might be in the range where you can tell... but I've never really noticed.
