This is probably a conversation to move to another thread (the politics thread, probably).

Maybe it's easier to compare it to religion.  I'm religious.  When someone says "I hate religious fanatics!" I have an option.  Either I can agree with their literal statement, because I too have nothing but disdain for religious fanatics.  Or, I can try to understand what, by their logic, constitutes a fanatic.  And this is where we'll disagree.  A lot of people who issue that statement would include me and a lot of the good people of the Earth under the banner of "religious fanatic."  It should be obvious that I don't hate all of those people.  So I would therefore disagree with the statement, not as it was literaly made, but as the spirit of the statement intended.  And perhaps you'll understand if I also take slight offense at the original statement if I detect its intention was to be offensive to me.

When V for Vendetta the comic book was published, I didn't give it too much attention.  When V for Vendetta the movie was released, I anticipated seeing it.  Perhaps I was in a good mood about it, but I never took the literal meaning of the movie "Bad governments should be corrected or fought and overthrown, violently when necessary." to flow to current events: "George W. Bush's America should be violently overthrown."  Though I do know that a lot of people interpreted it that way.  I don't think the original intention of the book was that and I don't think that the intention of all of the filmmakers was such either.  Perhaps it was and I am willfully naive.

When it comes to BioShock Infinite, I see that "extreme" patriotism is what is being attacked.  Like you, I have no problem condemning "extreme" patriotism.  But I know that you and I would define that "extremism" differently and I suspect that we might define it very differently.  It wouldn't surprise (or offend) me that you hold the private opinion that I am an extreme patriot, and need to tone it down somewhat.  As your friend, I would also not be offended at an open discussion of such.

However, I don't know that I would extend the same courtesy to Irrational games and Ken* Levine.  I don't think it is the gameplay of BioShock that so intrigues me... instead it is the world of Rapture.  If the primary theme of the World of Columbia is intended to vilify a definition of extreme patriotism of which the designers believe I am a part- I don't think I would enjoy the experience.  I would not boycott the game so much as spend my time and money on experiences that I would enjoy more.  I would, however still be sad that I missed out on a BioShock game.

Does that clarify my position?

I just assumed it was some silliness belched out on the "bio" pages of the Lucas Franchise machine.  Which to me, has always felt weirdly uncomfortable, a sort of role-playing extension that is so fleshed-out that it borders on disturbing.  Particularly for adults.

I was wrong about the back stories, or at least some of the ones I've read so far.  These stories are from some very talented writers and some of them would make interesting novels on their own. Once again, this board grows my Star Wars universe.
Yeah, most if not all of the back stories are from comics or books or the cartoons.

I would say a fair amount are also from the West End Role Playing books predomiantly written by Bill Slavicsec.

I've hardly even played the game... I loved the demo but the game seemed to go straight on the backburner and never came off.

You are dead to me.

watching the E3 stuff for Bioshock Infinite. Personally, I still think it looks very promising. I like the idea of an unconnected continuity with similar themes (much like System Shock to Bioshock).

I'll admit I haven't caught up on all of the E3 stuff.  I'm still a little surprised they're hawking it so hard when it's still a release for next year.  Maybe even late next year.  ?

Has anything you've seen made you think it won't feature anti-caricatured-extreme-patriotism theme?  Or at least, not in a way that won't come across as condescending to actual/literal patriots?

I'm still not sure what 2K/Irrational think of Objectivism.  I can't imagine making the world of Rapture the way they did if they just wanted to dismiss Objectivism as a false philosophy.  I don't think people who simply dismiss it would go into so much depth (bad pun maybe intended?).  But I think it's also clear they're Objectivists either.  Since they handled that pretty well (I'm not an Objectivist, but I agree with them more than I don't) maybe I shouldn't be so worried about how they will handle the themes of patriotism.

However, I still think a part three to Bioshock featuring my splicer island idea would have been amazing. <snip> 2K needs to hire me.

Well, Irrational Games is hiring.  I'll put in a good word for you when they hire me.  ;)

Are Max Rebo and Hooter long lost brothers? ;)

W00t!  Captain EO reference!  AND I GOT IT!

There's a joke in here too...

Such as: One of them hangs out with a vile piece of worm ridden filth.  And the other one hangs out with Jabba the Hutt.

Maybe that's not fair.  Hooter was before the "crazy" days for MJ as far as I can tell.

Please watch the trailer to Prey 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h2TkpFEsn8 (Watch in HD)

I didn't care for the little of Prey 1 that I played, so I wasn't terribly interested in Prey 2.  The first 30 seconds of this trailer hit earlier this year which made me say an actualTM: "What is this I don't even."

This doesn't just look like it might be a good game, it looks like decent Science Fiction to boot.  Check it, check it, check it out.  (And Funk's Your Brother).

Just wanted to bump this.  Did anyone else watch this?  I was quite impressed.

I've actually never played the second one.

I actually choose Jazz Jack Rabbit as my new "favorite game" to match my new "favorite movie" by looking up a list of games from 1994 and choosing the worst one I could remember playing that didn't have Star Wars in its title. Not that I didn't enjoy Jazz Jack Rabbit, I only ever had the demo version, but I have no doubt it ranks as the demo I have by far spent the most time on in my entire life.

The demo threw constant subliminal and non-subliminal advertisements for the Gravis gamepad at players and that always made me really want one. One day I found one on clearance and an Electronics Boutique and thanks to Jazz Jack Rabbit I didn't even have to think twice about blowing $10 on the thing. I went home in a mild state of euphoria, feeling kind of like I just found my own personal Holy Grail. I'm telling you, if that wasn't one of the biggest wastes of $10 I ever spent in my entire life...

I had a Gravis GamePad I'm sure I spent way more than $10 on.  I loved it.  It helped me get over my SNES envy to a degree.  Commander Keen played so smoothly on that baby.  That is, until I went to week-long scout camp and my brother and my cousin broke it but wouldn't admit it.  And my $60 stereo headphones with attached mic.  I never got a chance to use the mic at the same time, really.  BUT I WAS GOING TO!

Wait, why is this in the "ignoring thread"?

What my kids gave me for Father's Day:

It has a drawer where you can put the BDs & DVDs... but it seems a little impractical to get them in and out of there...  Thank goodness it came with a regular case as well.

This is the 4th time I've bought T2 on disc.  I still have purchase #2 and #3.  But since this set contains the 4 DVDs that made up #2 and #3... I guess I can sell them to my heart's content.

Okay, alt+left arrow is an IE shortcut for "back".  Don't use this on accident or you'll lose your 4 page diatribe on Pixar and Disney.

The short-short version is: loved everything through Incredibles minus Bug's Life.  Couldn't stand Cars or RatatouilleWall-E was a complete waste to me.  Up was a mixed bag.  Like some of the rest of you, I was onboard until the talking dogs showed up.

Toy Story 3 was either going to bring me back to enjoying Pixar or suffer guilt through association.  I'm sorry to say it didn't win me back, but it was their most enjoyable outing in recent years to me.

And apparently I need to watch The Iron Giant again.  I remember watching it... and that's about it.

The saddest bit to me is this:

I happened to play BS1 and BS2 a year apart in June/July when my wife took the kids out for a week to visit family out of state.  I stayed home to work and make all of the money they were spending.  But on the Friday night I stayed up and powered through a BS from start to finish.  It was awesome.  Probably not very good for me, but as it tends to only be a once-a-year deal, I think I'm okay.

So, that weekend is coming up in about a month.  And while I have things to play, I certainly don't have a BioShock....  And I don't think I have anything worthy of staying up all night to play.  I should probably start FallOut3... but there's no way I would finish it in a week of staying up all night.  :(

I have a friend that might loan me Force Unleashed II for the weekend.  I don't suppose it's worthy of that kind of attention, but I've been meaning to play it anyways.

Random Thoughts
Time

I had a dream the other night that I was the 5th Weezer (or possibly the 6th, since there was another new guy there... maybe I was before him, and he was the 6th.  Probably.)

We were on tour and were in a small town parade with a bunch of other of today's big bands.  We were holding our own in comparative popularity, but we knew we could do better!  Since a lot of these people were of my parents generation, I suggested that we try to channel John and Paul and write a new song that would remind them of the Beatles.  The other 5 Weezers thought this was a brilliant idea.  In the end, I wrote a song that was called Darth Vader Dad, which I thought was quite decent.  Even when I woke up, I was convinced that it was a great song.

It took a full day for that feeling to wear off.  :)
