Great Scott! Back to the Future (Was: Bringing to Pass BTTFptII's 2015)
Time

Okay, so forgive me for being on this BTTF kick recently, but I had another thought.

(and yes, I realize this might go better over at FE.org, but one of the frinking mods has it in for me).

As I was enjoying the end of BTTF2 and the start of BTTF3, an obvious thought dawned on me followed by a thought I don't think I've ever had, which is soon followed up by an interesting question regarding space/time.  Eventually followed up by a revelation that will shock these forums to THEIR VERY CORE!

Obvious: The 3 BTTF Films are told chronologically from Marty's perspective.

New Thought: I think I'd like to see a fan edit of the three movies that tell the story chronologically from Doc's perspective.  We start with a 1955 Doc who meets Marty, helps send him to the future, and then immediately meets another Marty, helps send him to the past... then flash forward thirty years and see Doc meet Marty at the mall and send him back in time to the 50s (wow, Doc seems to send Marty out in the time machine a lot... he must be dying (get it?) to get to try it himself!) Goes to the future, comes back, gets Marty and Jennifer, goes Back to the Future, chews out Marty abouts the sports almanac, rescues Jennifer, goes back to 1985, goes back to 1955, meets himself, rescues Marty, goes to the Old West, meets Marty again, meets Clara, falls in love, and then sends Marty, you guessed it, Back to the Future, then apparently gets married, has kids and learns how to make a flux capacitor that runs on steam.

*phew*

Sure, we're missing a lot of scenes that would be required to really make it make sense.  But I think it would be interesting.  Or maybe it's interesting enough just to think about it.  I especially like that part where pt2 Marty comes up to 1955 Doc immediately after the end of pt1 and says he's back from the future.  Seeing that in the context of the first movie makes my brain happy.

Here's the question: Does pt3 OldWestDoc not remember being pt3 1955Doc and sending Marty back to 1885?  It's been 30 years, but he should still remember, right?  As soon as Doc writes the letter to Marty, shouldn't he have memories of Marty bringing him the letter, the two of them finding the time machine, fixing it and sending Marty back to rescue... himself?  And when he sees Marty in his ridiculous cowboy get-up, instead of asking "What idiot dressed you like that?" shouldn't he instead apologize for his ignorance of 30 years ago?

Or is that a different Doc?  Just like Marty presumably doesn't have memories of growing up with the hip version of his parents... Does that pt3 1955 Doc now exist in a different 1955 (1955B. 1955AA being the Marty version of 1955 and 1955A being the old Biff version that leads to 1985A)?  If that's the case, does any of that affect 1985C Doc?  Maybe to the point that he doesn't create the time machine?

But wait!  (Here's the juicy part!)  In BTTF1, Marty left 1985, created 1955AA and then came back to 1985AA (since 1985A is already taken).  What happened to 1985 Doc?  He died!  1955AA Doc has forever been altered by Marty in 1955AA and has then become 1985AA Doc.  1985AA Doc didn't invent the time machine the same way as 1985 Doc.  What was theory to 1985 Doc is practice to 1985AA Doc!  Sure, he came up with the idea for the flux capacitor before the timelines diverged... but what about the idea to use a delorean?  Marty's reaction would have been the same "Are you trying to tell me that you built a "time machine" out of a DeLorean?!?!"  But 1985AA Doc could hardly answer, "Well, I thought why not build it with some style?"  More likely he would have had to say, "Well... that's the car I saw when I was visited by a time traveling Calvin Klein in the 50s."  What about deciding to steal the plutonium?  Depending on when he read Marty's letter, he might have gotten the idea from the letter as well.  What about setting the time circuits for 1955?  1985Doc did this because he was fondly remembering the day he thought of the Flux Cap.  1985AA Doc would have to do it to not mess with history.

And think of how odd 1985AA Doc's friendship would have been with 1985AA Marty.  Doc would have had to have played everything very close to the vest to not screw that up.

HEY!  WHAT HAPPENED TO 1985AA MARTY!?!?!   The ONE WITH the TRUCK?!?!?!  1985 Marty MURDERED him!

The End.

I think that same Big Daddy will be mine next month.  And maybe a flying delorean.

I also have some Toys'R'Us credit... They have this "Subject Omega/Little Sisters/Life Size Wrecked Rabbit Splicer Mask" set on clearance there for $30.  I've been waiting for it to hit $20 or even $25.  I've probably spent $20 in gas just stopping by week to week.  :(  I should probably just get it.

Oh man! I really want that Splicer Rabbit mask!

Personally, I'd rather have a splicer mask that isn't in tatters.  I tried to make one out of paper.  I think I posted it here before, but you can search for pepakura bioshock and find lots of them.  I made the mistake of making the inside/back first so when I tried to put the front on, it had lots of gaps.  I guess I should have just finished it and then bondo'd it and painted it.  :(  I might have to try it again.

I saw a video of that Big Daddy figure with the LED lights on Youtube. Man, is it cool looking. The lights look fantastic! I almost bought the original Big Daddy figure when it was first released, but didn't want to blow $35 bucks at the time, now I am really glad I didn't because I wouldn't be able to justify this one with the lights.

I've gone through the same phases of loss:

Shock (Wait!  I didn't know I needed that!)
Denial (psh... I don't need it.  Besides, I heard that they were fragile and broke a lot)
Bargaining (Ebay bids)
Anger (Ebay losses)
Guilt (high ebay bids of which my wife wouldn't approve)
Depression (high ebay bids which were still too low to win)
Hope (maybe there'll be lower demand in the future)
Acceptance (okay, I'll never have a big daddy doll)
Excitement (Holy Carp!  This light up Big Daddy is AWESOME!)
Relief (And it's a metric tonne less than those ebay ones I didn't buy!)

And hopefully soon:

The-Buying-it-Step (This is where I buy it)

Do you remember my Big Daddy doll I made and posted here?

Not only do I remember it, I just saw it a couple hours ago when I was searching for the other time you brought up the John Shirley book.

Well, I gave it to a good friend of mine as a gift a short while later, then I decided I still wanted one for myself so I bought the officially one... but it just doesn't look right. The "rubber bands" are made out of felt and the baseball head doesn't even try to pretend to be a real baseball and its weight it really weird. It hangs weird and it sits weird. So, I have decided it is time to produce myself another one from scratch. Though I am not sure how committed to the effort I am yet. If I get anywhere with it, I'll post results.

Interesting... I thought of making one when I heard you'd made one... To keep up with the C3PXs and all... but I never followed through.  I thought I might pick up the official one, but based on your review I guess I won't.  I guess time will tell if I have the committment to make one.

Send me the instructions you decide to use this time.

Your favorite movies
Time

The older I get, the more I think I'm turning to the tastes I had when I was a kid.

I used to be a big Michael Jackson fan, but I "grew out of that" as a teenager.  But I seem to be getting back into it.

I almost grew out of Star Wars several times too...  but look at me now!

And for some reason, I think I really underestimated how much I loved/love Back to the Future.  I've had them on DVD for years, but not really watched them.  As I've been saying, I've just watched the trilogy with my son and have found that I've been missing out on revisiting this trilogy for years.

How did I forget I loved these movies so much?

Well... I'm off to build a hoverboard.

I'm contracting with a guy I found on instructables to make me lots of those acrylic hats.  Like the little record player one that the girl with the hoverboard had.  Those cost a few pennies though, so I'll need your help for financing.

http://www.mirajcaps.com/ Used to sell lenticular BTTF hat replicas but, the manufacturing was too expensive to justify further production. Their site hasn't been updated in years.

They have those hats at the local comic store.  Also on amazon.  It's pretty cool to read the reviews- people say they get a lot of recognition when they wear them.

Is Part 3 of Anything Ever Good?
Time

Again, I have a post and I'm not sure what thread to put it in.  So it goes here:

I have to take back my previous statements on BTTF3.  My son and I watched it this weekend.  And it was great.  Lives up to the legacy.

However, I do think it was "one trip to the well too many" for several of the "gags".  The "Marty wakes up next to Leah and thinks it was all a dream" bit and so forth...

I know it's not meant to be "realistic" but rather "charming"...  Do you find that those scenes are charming?  Or just ridiculous?

you never acknowledged it or said anything, which surprised me since you seem to be the only other person in the universe as into Bioshock as I am (or perhaps more accurately, in the same kind of way I am).

Back when I started a BioShock thread here and wanted to have serious discussion but it went nowhere fast with pictures of ice cream...

Well, I went over to the "Cult of Rapture" forums and did some reading and writing there.

You know that expression: Everyone who drives slower than you is an idiot and everyone faster than you is a moron?  Or in politics: Everyone to the left of you is an idiot and everyone to the right of you is a fanatic?

That was sort of my experience over there.  I'm a pretty serious BioShock fan, but I've got nothing on a lot of those guys.  It was quite intense.

An unfortunate side effect of discovering that book was that amazon showed me a few "recommendations" on my home page, one of which was a Bouncer action figure with color changing LED eyes. I've always kind of wished I'd bought the original Bioshock special edition because of the Big Daddy statue (yes, the one that had a tendency to break during shipping), so the idea of finally having my very own plastic representation of one of the most amazing things ever dreamed up by the human imagination was a bit too much to take... so yeah, I am $20 bucks poorer than when I woke up this morning...

I hear you.  I've had it in my cart a couple times.  Right next to the Eve Hypo.  We have an "Amazon Mom" membership which gets us the best price on diapers and also a free "prime" membership for a year as long as we keep spending $25 on baby stuff monthly.

For some reason, a lot of toys and action figures count as "baby stuff".  And since we are only ordering about $25 every 5-6 weeks, I have to order some action figures every now and then.

I think that same Big Daddy will be mine next month.  And maybe a flying delorean.

Back in the 90s, my mom and I used to catch this cop show called "The Commish".  Michael Chiklis before he was all hard.  I couldn't remember what made the show so charming to us, but I do recall being charmed.

I was at target and they had Seasons 1&2 for $14.99, so I snagged them for my mom for Christmas.  My dad sort of refuses to watch anything in SD any more (and the PQ on these DVDs is rubbish), but they turned these on after the new year and ended up having to buy the rest of the seasons.

So the Mrs. and I have been watching some of them casually too.  It really was a great show.  Pretty lighthearted family stuff mixed with some of the most depressing examples of human behaviour... it is an odd mix.  But it works.

It was made in the early 90s, but the cars make me think it was made in the early 80s.  I guess my memory of cars in the 90s is broken.

So for years I've been languishing under the opinion that cartoons today sucked. I grew up in the golden age of Nickelodeon, with shows like Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Angry Beavers, etc. Whenever I turn on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon these days all I see is bullshit.

It's funny, I tend to agree with your about growing up during the golden age of cartoons, but I would have listed:

He-Man
Mask
Voltron
Thundercats
DuckTales
Batman TAS
X-Men TAS
Spider-Man TAS
etc...

But when I think of the crap cartoons that were coming out as I was getting out of cartoons, I think of Rugrats, and generally some of the other of that generation.

Funny how those things work, right?

And I know some other users here will think that my list of the "golden age"skews too young.  Just the way that cookie tends to crumble.

Comics. (Not the comedians)
Time

I don't know if this goes in Video Games, Last Book Read, or here!  AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

But I just tore through the first 11 issues of Spider-Man 2099.  My 8 year old has been playing Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions which has introduced him to this character.  I wanted to re-read through them to make sure they weren't age inappropriate.

They're actually pretty engaging and hold up over all of the years.  Maybe it's just me, but 1992-1993 seems to be this huge time for comics.  It's overly represented in my personal collection.

I probably only missed being in the target audience of Pokemon by a couple of years, but it's firmly fixed in my mind as something for "kids".  The idea that there are people I generally consider my peers that were/are into Pokemon makes me feel like I must be the old fuddy duddy that needs to find "people my age" (read: Frink) to hang with.

Though Frink is probably thinking the same thing about me.  ;)

XHONZI!!! I DEMAND TO KNOW!!!

Are you or are you not aware of the pending existence of this:

http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-Rapture-John-Shirley/dp/0765324857/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1308546955&sr=1-1

If so, what are your initial opinions on it? If not, what are your initial opinions now?

Yeah, that's been on my Amazon wishlist for a couple months.  I can't remember how I came across it, but it was probably during one of my routine amazon searches for BioShock.

I'm cautiously optimistic.  As you may recall, upon finishing BS2, and the "twist segment" near the end, I realized that as much as I liked BS1 and BS2, that what would really be interesting to me was a game that took place during the glory days of Rapture.  I decided it couldn't be the "action" game that BS1/BS2 were, but something more like a detective game, like a Tex Murphy or something.  My mind raced with what this game could be and I decided I would like to see two games (I know).  One where you're a detective on the surface investigating a missing persons case which eventually leads you to Rapture (in its prime).  This game gives you the chance to see the world that the Rapturians left behind to go live under the ocean.  And a second game where you're investigating a case in Rapture itself which causes you to interact with the primary movers of Rapture.

As fun as my own imagination can be sometimes, I realize I'll never really get to play these games.  So, this book is probably my best bet at getting that kind of wish fulfillment.  However, there're only two people I implicitly trust to handle it well (read: According to my wishes) Ken Levine and xhonzi.

Hence the caution in my optimism.

But I'll read it.  I haven't paid $18 for a hardcover in a decade, so I'm not sure how long it will take me to get around to it.  Hopefully it appears at a goHastings sale soon after release.

EDIT: Didn't we (or at least you) talk about this book already once in this thread?  I can't find it.

EDIT2: I just noticed the cover art has changed to the picture I use as wallpaper on my laptop.  Sweet.

A Star Trek - Original Series Primer? ~or~ What 5 or so episodes to show an 8 year old to introduce him to Kirk and Spock?
Time

It's basically all there in the title.

As I've mentioned, I'm starting to show my 8 year old a slew of classic films, and I've included Star Trek 2-4 & 6 on that list.

But before he sees Star Trek II (SPOILERS and the death of Spock) I wanted him to see some classic Original Series episodes.  Space Seed is definitely on the list.  Also the Trouble with Tribbles.

Though I'm drawing a blank on 3-4 other episodes that would be enjoyable for an 8 year old and also establish all of the relationships to prepare him to enjoy the movies.

Help?

Just watched that Star Trek trailer. Really good Star Trek game... Wait what? It looks like a regular crappy third person film tie in, I must have missed the news that makes us think this will be really good.

I guess the fact that they are working on it this far ahead (they have another year yet, right?) is somewhat promising. Any other reasons this is going to be good?

One of the BioShock2 developers is working on it.  I really liked BS2, so maybe that's a promising thing.

So last year we got a good Batman game, and NOW you're telling me we're getting a good Star Trek game? Maybe the apocalypse is imminent after all.

One of the comments I read on that youtube clip was:

More-or-less:

Wah!  Why is this an action game?  It should be a Point'n'Click adventure like King's Quest or Monkey Island!

Did anyone else play 25th Anniversary Star Trek?  It was a point'n'click adventure and I quite liked it.  They did a sequel which I recall wasn't quite as good.  One of them had Mudd in it!  And I had to learn base 3 to get past one of the puzzles.

Oh and Batman the Rise of Sin Tzu was a good Batman game.

And I thought the Batman Begins games was half decent too.

But Arkham Asylum was the best, on that I can agree.
