Off Topic is now unmoderated
Time

I have a conspiracy theory!

You know how in ancient times, the king would release a lion into town, let it maul and murder a few peasants and then eventually the king's guards would wound the lion so the king could come out and slay it...?  You know, as a way of convincing the peasants that they needed/loved the king?

Yeah, that's right.  I'm calling Anchorhead out.  Except that instead of a lion, he used bees.  And instead of bees, he used a sock.

OffTopic'ers: [Behaving badly]
Mods: YOU'RE BEHAVING BADLY! [Locks threads]
O: Hey, nobody asked you, mods!  Who needs you, anyways?  We don't want moderation!
M: Fine.  No more moderation.
O: Weesa free!
M: Anchorhead is a mod.
O: Yay, but leave Off-Topic unmoderated!
M: Okay, we will.  [Let's see how they like THIS!]
P's Cancer: Hey, youse guys, @#$#$^ @#$^@#$% @#$^ $%^@#^ @#$%! @#%!#%!
O: Hey that's not cool!
P: Oh, yeah?  @#%$ $%^ %^& ^&*&*@# ^@&&**^& #$% $ @%^
O: Hey, Mods?  Ban this guy!
M: ...
O: HEY, MODS!
M: Yeeesssssss?
O: BAN THIS BLOKE!
M: Okay.
O: Yay, we love the Mods again!  We promise, we'll never want to be unmoderated again!
M: Okay, but bee good. [Snigger]

What do you think?  Time for tinfoil hats?  Where can you even buy tinfoil anymore?  I'LL TELL YOU WHERE!  THE UN has BLOCKED IT FROM BEING SOLD, because THE TIN WAS BLOCKING THE (bee like) ALIEN OVERLORD'S SIGNALS and REPLACED with ALUMINIUM FOIL because IT DOESN'T BLOCK SO MUCH!

PEPSI AND COKE ARE THE SAME THING!

If GL changed his mind about releasing OUT, but with a few tweaks.....
Time

We went through this a couple of months ago, but I couldn't find the thread.  As I, and very few others said then, I would be happy enough with that.

Call me what you will, but it's the story/pacing/character/tonal changes and blatant technical errors that annoy me more than any of the "tweaks" or "fixes".

And by "tweak" or "fix" I mean the standard street definition of this term, not the LFL definition.

That's why I'm pretty darn happy with Theatrical reconstructions or de-specialized versions.  They're not original, but they look original.  And that satisfies the Star Wars geek in me, even if the film historian side is still unhappy.  And, in this case, Star Wars Geek wins.

Mass Effect 1 versus Mass Effect 2 (give reasons)
Time

Strangely enough, I already have all of the DLC (except The Arrival).  It was all on sale (except the Arrival) last Christmas and I decided I would chance it (except the Arrival).

How was The Arrival?

I am looking forward to starting ME2 soon.  As I said in the generic video games thread, I didn't really care for ME1 that much, but the ending had me excited for the sequel.

just beat AC2 on PS3 with 98% completion.  I got tired of looking for all those damn feathers and missed just a few monetary treasures.  The game rocked!!  Is AC brotherhood worth buying?  Im not interested in the multiplayer stuff.  Is the single player campaign fun and have a good continuing story about Ezio?

Hell yes it is worth buying, it is a BLAST to, but you better get it soon and beat it, AC: Revelations is coming and it is bringing closure to the Altair and Ezio stories.

Absolutlely!  It's maybe not quite as good (maybe "groundbreaking" is a better word) as 2, but it's right up there.  And I actually found it to be the best story of the 3, so far.

When it first came out, it sounded like it was an MP game... then it sounded like an MP game with a little SP game- allow me to tell you that it is a full featured SP game.  ~40 hours, maybe a few +/- to AC2.

I can't recommend it highly enough.  Especially if you're all over AC2.

(Though I can't decide if a one should jump directly into ACB after finishing AC2... or a one should take a little break so that the comparisons aren't so direct and that the AC fatigue isn't already higher than it should be.)

The BDs - Neither Meat Nor Fish
Time

I had this thought about the BDs the other day.

If there are 2 Star Wars camps- this release should satisfy neither of them.

Camp 1 AKA "Us" - Either want just the originals, or tasteful, restrained updates to some of the effects (matte work, whatever).  This BD release is obviously not that.

Camp 2 AKA "Ugh..."- Want the be all/end all version.  With the best colours and sound that modern technology can supply and all of the latests "visions" that George Lucas has been having.  The BD isn't that either.

So why are people still buying this?

The original ending of Ponda Baba

This thread is now reminding me of when TPM was first in theatres and I heard that Maul was going to be cut in two. I thought we the audience would get to see the "meat" of Maul's exposed innards, that the scene was going to be as gory as gory could get in a PG movie.

But we got CG Maul coming apart like a broken action figure instead.

Would TPM somehow be a better movie for the inclusion of guts and gore in this scene?

I think that's the question at hand.

Yeah yeah, less apology more articulation. That's kind of what I was asking for.

Alright-

I've never cared for Wonder Woman.  I think she does far more damage to the "comics as a respectful story telling medium" than good.

I can sort of appreciate the recent attempts at cleaning up her image (giving her pants and a... lower... neckline) but I think her star spangled bottom is sort of at the heart of her "character".  Well, that's not really fair to say.  Just because I don't care for her as a character and have only ever seen her as superficial window dressing doesn't mean that there aren't people out there somewhere that like her for her "sparkling personality".  I just don't see it personally.

I think cleaning her up sort of makes her unnecessary all around.  Not trashy enough to be eye candy, not interesting enough to be anything else.  I think she's a product of an earlier age and it doesn't surprise me that she hasn't gotten any new media off the ground.

GL's getting old. http://www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/theagingeye.php

Color vision and contrast sensitivity are also affected by aging. Color vision changes cause some reduction of ability to discriminate blues and blue-greens. The yellowing of the lens is believed to be responsible for this effect. The aging lens and cornea causes glare by light scattering, especially for shorter wavelengths. Stray light and lenticular fluorescence washes out contrast. (Reference: Work, Aging and Vision. National Academy Press; 1987). Contrast sensitivity shows a significant age-related decline (Ophthalmic Physiol Opt 2000;20:323-34). Wavefront aberrations of the cornea also increase with age, leading to poor vision quality especially when the pupil dilates as in the dark (Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1999;40:1351-5)

Wow, that's almost as depressing as the rest of this thread.

Secret Window - Yes I know we're a little behind the times.  I enjoyed it right up until the ending.

It smacks of typical disposable storytelling, something not meant to be thought about or dwelt on at all.  Like a campfire story that's forgotten as soon as the next one begins.

Something I've always associated with Steven King.  His short stories and novellas at any rate.  (Secret Window was based on a Steven King novella, in case you were wondering what the connection was.)
