What's your Personal Canon?
Time

I usually think that my Canon is probably a bit bigger than it actually is...

And I have levels- not that I really classify them (yet) but that even if I consider something to be 'canon', it's not always terribly relevant.

If someone wrote a short story (or comic (Star Wars Tales, maybe)) with a new scene of Han, Leia, Chewie and C3PO passing time on the Falcon on the way to the Lando system, and I liked it and it didn't contradict anything else I considered canon...  I might not throw it out of my "personal canon" but it wouldn't rank very high as far as "importance" or "relevancy".

Even so, here's what I consider canon personnaly like and watch/read/play.

Original Trilogy-

  • Star Wars Revisited hits about 10/12 cylinders for me.  If I wasn't so lazy/was more talented I'd make my own Revisited Reloaded and be 99% happy.
  • Adywan's ESB Theatrical (Until I can see ESB:R)
  • ??? Still not sure about a RotJ.  I've d/l'ed a couple and checked out a few less.

Books- (I read everything from Splinter of the Minds eye to something around Planet of Twilight.  I've read each of the PT novels and 1.2 of the Darth Bane books.  I used to consider a lot of more of them canon, but now I guess it would just be:)

  • Zahn Trilogy
  • Most of Jedi Academy Trilogy
  • Children of the Jedi (maybe?  I only read this once when it came out, but I recall enjoying it)
  • The first several Young Jedi Knights books (again- haven't read in ages, but I recall these being surprisingly good, considering the author (we hates the KJA, we hates THEM!) and the subject matter.  But they're far enough removed from the core characters that I don't really care one way or another.  See my earlier note on relevancy.)
  • Maybe 25% or less of The Courtship of Princess Leia.  As if it's a really poorly written tabloid version of it or something.

(Yet to read, but looking forward to them:)

  • Hand of Thrawn Duology
  • Survivor's Quest

Comics-

  • 75% of Dark Empire
  • 50% of Dark Empire II
  • 10% of Empire's End
  • 100% of Tales of the Jedi, Freedon Nadd
  • 90% of Dark Lords of the Sith
  • 70% of Sith War
  • 50% of Golden Age of/Fall of the Sith Empire
  • 70% of Redemption
  • 99% of Legacy, Legacy War
  • 90% of Mara Jade, Union
  • ~% of the X-Wing books (I guess)
  • 1% of the Star Wars Tales

I didn't completely hate the KotOR books, and I read the whole series.  I'm tempted to throw it on this list, but nah...  I've only read a little Empire/Rebellion and they've never really felt like must reads to me.

Games- (This is harder.  The above are all "story" media, whereas this is something differnent.  I really enjoyed the act of playing both Force Unleashed games, but I wouldn't ever consider their stories canon)

  • 100% Dark Forces
  • 50% Jedi Knight
  • 60% Jedi Outcast

I guess the rest either weren't trying to have their own continuity (Battlefront, X-Wing, Super Star Wars, etc...) or had such terrible stories (Rebel Assault, etc...) or had nice stories, but they just don't fit (Force Unleashed).

So...Anyone else playing Deus Ex 3?

As the record states- I am a huge fan of the first 2.  So this is definitely high on my list of games to play, but like [CE](3?)[PR](3?)(i?)[CSX]/i, I can wait out a price drop a little bit.

Toys'R'Us ad shows them having DE:HR PS3/360 for $35 next week.

That's a pretty tempting price... but as I said, it's a matter of time as well as price.  By the time I have time, the price will probably be even lower.

Episode One

THE ANCIENT ENEMY

After a thousand generations of stability the institutions of the GALACTIC REPUBLIC are beginning to crumble.

Planets outside the Republic are safe havens for pirates and crime lords and the complacency of senators from core systems has led to worlds on the edge of Republican influence becoming easy prey for greedy corporations.

Under blockade by the Neimoidian fleet, the royal house of Naboo have begged the Supreme Chancellor to intercede. Secretly he has sent two JEDI KNIGHTS to resolve the conflict...

I was playing along until I read Neimodian, Naboo, and Supreme Chancellor in the same sentence.

I thought the rules of the game here were to write new crawls for new prequels.  It seems at least half of these are new crawls for the existing prequels.

Whatever happened to darth_ender?

Well, he pretty much bombed a test because he spent too much time on this site and not enough time studying, so now he's spending his time doing more important things.

At least, if I don't get off of here now, that will be an accurate statement around 9:30 tomorrow (MST for those who really want to monitor my life)

I love it here, but I think desperate times call for desperate measures.  I need you all to chastize me if you see me commenting here.  I make one exception: I may comment on weekends, but if you see me commenting more than an hour, please politely tell me to sign off and do more important things like study.

Do we all need to take a "I will not acknowledge darth_ender Monday-Friday" pledge?

That image I have my image in, I proudly have owned it since its release.

I assume you meant to say something along the lines of the game your avatar image is from?

I actually always wished I had bought that game years ago when it was still on store shelves. I remember it was part of a buy two get one free deal at EB Games once, but I wasn't familiar with BR at the time. I think I got Sim Copter, the Streets of Sim City (which were the two games I really wanted), and some crappy racing game as my third game since they didn't have anything else I was interested in. Really should have grabbed BR then. That would be one old game I'd be very proud to have the complete original box and book for.

BR was a great game.  I'm not sure if it still is.  I wonder if the voxel graphics engine makes it stand up better today... or worse.

I remember buying it on release day (week maybe) at a brand new store called "CompUsa".  It sure beat EggHead Computers!  I paid $30 for it and was pretty happy about that.

1. No atheist has ever killed anyone in the name of God.

My thoughts:

1) True, at least by definition.  But if someone kills my family, I don't care if they did it in the name of God or because they wear their pants too low...end result is the same.

I was thinking about this on my drive home yesteday.

Maybe the numbers don't compare, but lots of religious believers were killed by atheists in communist Albania.  Religion was outlawed and exercise or belief therein was punishable by death.  I have no numbers, but the law existed for ~45 years with varying degrees of execution.

Conclusion: No atheist killed in the name of God.  But plenty of atheists have killed due to the name of God.

Are the Jedi so good?

The rot sets in in ROTJ.

The original shooting script and the novel expands Ben's reason for fibbing to Luke to underline just how important he is and how recklessly futile his rescue attempt of friends was.

By trimming that Ben comes across as manipulative as Palpatine.

Yoda is keen on Luke facing his fears (he never asks Luke to kill his father just face and defeat Vader) but Ben comes across as being obsessed with Luke killing Vader (which is a bit of tall order after using a myth about a pre-existing murderer to get Luke to start his quest in the first place).

Ultimately it's Yoda's approach of NOT DEPENDING ON WEAPONS (I'm looking at you Lucas) that wins the day.

+1

The PT Jedi are a bloody weird bunch.

When I saw ANH and ESB I never for a moment imagined a child procuring, Ninja, Vatican State, UN peace keeping 'force', that turned a blind eye to slavery enforced familial disconnects while obsessing about celibacy.

It turned an epic battle between good and evil into the clash of two slightly different creepy cults and the resulting fallout.

+1

With poopy jokes.  You know... for kids.

 Fixed.

I usually don't pay attention to the source I'm linking to...unless I read the story and it's too slanted (for my taste ;-) ).  And I rarely read the comments on any site since it's usually a waste of time.

For the record, I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything.  The guy in the article was a whack job.  I just found some of the comments to be extreme as well.

Great movies are great movies, despite their ratings- not because of them.

But a great movie can be made worse by cutting out certain parts in order to achieve a lower and more marketable rating.

Possibly.

I've seen my fair share of movies that are edited for offensive content.  With few exceptions- I've never really thought that the missing content went... missing.

As in "edited for television"? Savvy filmmakers have been shooting alternate takes to cover that for years. Most movies only play on basic cable these days instead of the networks, and things are more relaxed now than in the 80's and 90's.

The worst part of an "edited for TV" movie is usually the awkwardness/readily apparent nature of the edit, not the missing content itself.  As you said, Savvy filmmakers can either make the TV edit the peer of the more extreme version- or a parody.

Modern games (and I realise I must be making a sweeping generalisation here) seem to arm you with much more than you need which dissipates much of the tension.

Any road up wish me luck on those stormy waters.

Not that these games are necessarily about tension, but Halo  (2 and onward, I think) had a "skull" which, when activated, would reduce the amount of ammo guns had in them when dropped by fallen enemies.  This made the games much less "comfortable" and, for this spartan, much more exciting.  You'd basically see a gun on the ground- scoop it up- fire off the 6 or 7 shots left in it- whilst constantly scanning the ground for your next gun.  The end result is that you can't nurse your favourite gun all game like you normally can.

It's my favourite skull in those games.

Here in Texas, all soft drinks are Coke.

I never experienced that in my years in San Antonio, so perhaps it's more localized than that?  I've always understood that to be a "southern" thing, and some parts of Texas are much more "Southern" than others.

That was my experience in Corpus Christi (only a few hours away) as well.

Which was?  Coke=coke?  Or coke=everything?

"PG" doesn't mean the same thing as it does now; PG movies weren't necessarily for kids, they just didn't have explicit sex, violence and profanity, the same as PG-13 movies today. You could show breasts (Airplane, right in a close up too) and have some pretty grusome violence (Jaws), with healthy mounts of mild profanity (most movies before the 80s...American Graffiti). In fact, some movies rated G back then had nudity (Andromeda Strain) and were intended mainly for adults (2001, Star Trek The Motion Picture).

That's why Star Wars, with its moderate cartoon violence and brief realistic violence, was rated G at first. A brief glimpse of a severed arm, some roasted corpses, exploding pilots and mildly unrealistic gunplay were things that it wasn't unusual to have in a G rated film. All a G rating was was that it just meant that if you brought kids it wouldn't be terribly objectionable. A PG film didn't mean it was for kids, it just meant it wasn't The Exorcist or Taxi Driver. Anyway, with all that Star Wars got a G rating, but in one of--or possible the--only exceptions to the ratings appeal process, Lucasfilm argued for a HIGHER rating. Their reason?

Star Wars wasn't supposed to be a kids film and they felt that by having it G rated it would be seen as juvenile by association. They wanted it to appeal to older people, so they asked the rating be raised to PG, the same rating shared by recent hit films like Jaws, Rocky and Logans Run (which had frontal nudity I think).

That's why it always seems weird the whole "Star Wars is for kids" thing. They changed the rating so it would be seen as for adults too. Parental Guidance meant the film wasn't going to be The Exorcist but as a parent you had to consider if you wanted your kids exposed to it. Heck, even after they introduced the PG-13 and parents felt like they were suddenly absolved from responsibility because they drew an arbitrary age line now, you still had PG movies like Beetlejuice where its really morbid stuff and sexual innuendo and the character yells the word FUCK. I'm sure there's another example of fuck being in a PG movie after 1984, but it just goes to show you that before the more modern era from the 90s onward, PG was seen as something that was for adults but that it could also be appropriate for some (older, usually) children to see.

Which is why I think the "[REDACTED] movie would have been great if it had been rated 'R'" comment* I see so much is just dumb.

Great movies are great movies, despite their ratings- not because of them.

*There are tonnes of movies about which I've heard this statement.  But for some reason, the only one coming to mind currently is Alien vs Predator.

1. No atheist has ever killed anyone in the name of God.
2. Belief is the lowest form of thinking.
3. Religion is a dangerous thing and children need to be protected from it through laws, as we have laws protecting them from booze. No child should be allowed to be taught religion before they are of drinking age and have developed critical faculties which will let them question outlandish lies which all religions preach.
4. Along with freedom of religion we need freedom from religion.
5. All so-called men of the cloth or men of God need to undergo a psychiatric examination before being allowed to preach. And those who preach hate, like half the mullahs in American mosques and nasties like the irreverend Wright, should be jailed.
