AVATAR and 3D in general....
Time

Cameron said he was aware that there was a political line there and he said that he was doing his best to not make it political.  But that did sound a little reminiscent of the Pixar guys saying there was nothing political to Wall-E.  The said something to the effect of "There's nothing political about it.  It's about Global Warming and the effect we're having on our planet.  That's not political."

So... yeah...

Can anyone recommend to me some decent space opera novels?
Time

I read Starhammer by Christopher Rowley.  That was interesting, and quite a bit cheesey.

Someone was just at my desk and I recommended Eric Nylund's Halo books to them.  I don't see why I shouldn't do the same to you.  ;)

And, maybe a slight breach in protocol here, but the Annihilation books in Marvel Comic's series are really good.  There are 5 HC/TPBs that you can get the first two series in.  After that, it gets more complicated.

Likewise, I just read Geoff John's Green Lantern Rebirth and Sinestro Corps War.  Those were alright.  I'm not a DC guy, and I found these 3 TPBs to be mostly self contained.

RE: Marvel SW

I've read some of them and they didn't really grab me.  I got some that retold parts of the 1977 movie from my Uncle Blaine in the early 80s and I remember thinking they added some really dumb scenes that didn't make much sense.  Should I keep trying, or just accept that we're not on the same wavelength...?

I forgot to mention that I picked up the Thrawn Trilogy in comic form recently.  I've enjoyed seeing the books visualized to some point but find that the dialogue and story abridgement don't really stand up when you're reading the books at the same time.

How deeply rooted is "suck" in the Prequels?
Time

I think Dent works for the most part.  The problem I have with these "people turn to evil" storylines is that there's always a brief moment, the one where they cross whatever line, where the the motivation seems to fall flat for me.  I haven't watched Dark Knight since the theatre, so I can't remember all of Dent's fall from grace... but there was still a sort of "because the script says so" moment for me.

Someone here pointed out Hugh Jackman's character in The Prestige.  That one actually didn't occur to me because it is so subtle.  The more I think about it, the more I think it's a great example of someone giving up on all they once believed in after years of:

  1. Escalating Competition
  2. Obsession with a secret or goal
  3. Promise of success over his enemy

I read all of Dark Horse's Tales of the Jedi series when it ran from 1994 to 1998.  I really dug the series at first, but felt that it diminished over time (a factor of the amount of KJA involvement, I'm sure).  Still, these are probably my favorite SW comics.

I also really liked (85-90%) of the first Dark Empire series, found Dark Empire II to have some great ideas and some terrible ones, and thought Empire's End was just plain terrible.

Then I didn't read any Star Wars comics until Legacy started coming out.  I first came into contact with Legacy in an animated web-ad for Star Wars miniatures.  Is anyone else reading these?  There's 40 or so issues out, and it's been very good so far, IMO.  The only problem I have is that there were 30 issues when I started reading them a year ago and I saw the series as starting out really strongly and having lots of potential.  (I was at issue six or seven, so there were 23 issues just sitting there waiting for me to read them.)  Now that I'm all but caught up, I still feel like the series has a lot of potential, but that it's not necessarily any closer to actually delivering on it.  Perhaps that has to do with the serialized nature of a monthly comic vs a 6 issue limited run or a movie or something.  Still, it has been a breath of fresh-air for this SW fan who had learned to stop reading the books and was trying to "unlearn what I had learned 1999-2005."

I recently picked up Rogue Squadron Omnibuses 1 and 2.  I've heard those are good.

I don't like Dark Times, which I've read I think a little more than half of.  I had to read a pair of issues from Rebellion while reading Legacy (the Vector crossover).  It seemed alright.  Vector started with 4 issues in Knights of the Old Republic, which I couldn't stand.  I had heard that this series was good, so I was surprised that I didn't like it more than I did.  The sidekick character gives Jar Jar a run for his "Worst Star Wars character with no redeeming qualities" award.

I never read the PT comics.  I think I sat down at Barnes and Noble with one once, but found it to have the PT taint all over it.

Am I missing anything?

Yeah, there is no formal organization in my mind either.  I never thought of a conferrence like that, but it's not bad.

Part of my conceipt is that Obi-Wan made the deiscion to train Anakin because they were in the middle of the war.  That Obi-Wan perhaps served as a soldier in an earlier Clone War where he met someone who saw his potential and referred him to be trained by Yoda after the War.  Obi-Wan meets Anakin similarly and would make a referral for training, but can't stand to lose him until the fighting is over.  At some point in time, Obi-Wan decides to train him to the best of his abilities, even though he really shouldn't.

As far as the, "No!  Too old!  Yes, he is too old to begin the training!" line, I never took it too seriously.  Yoda is grasping at straws for reasons not to train Luke.

Besides, if they only traing kids to be Jedi, then I'm no longer eligible.  And I know that's not true.  ;)

Welcome to a Liberal Democrat society.**

**I've been drinking a little bit, so please excuse my more than ordinary pissed offfedness at liberals for ruining our society.

That's funny, I would have said that sharp political divides and partisanship were ruining our society.

Sure.  We blame the liberals for the partisanship and sharp political divides... so original statement still stands!  :)
