Is it harder to do SciFi on TV than it used to be?
Time

Is it?  Have the economics of TV budgets changed to the point that it's no longer financially viable?  It seems that the Original Star Trek had pretty darn good production values back in the day.

Terminator - Cancelled
Firefly - Cancelled

Babylon 5 - Outstayed its welcome and new spinoffs- Cancelled.
Star Trek - ditto

nuBSG seemed to have a good run with good production value.

What do you think?

Most of the highest grossing movies of all time are SciFi.  Almost all of them are "genre".  Why does it seem that Genre TV is considered to be such a poor performer?

When Matrix Revolutions came out, I remember a lot of people walking around my office, wanting to sound like they knew what they were talking about, saying "Well, I've heard it's just not making any money."  Because a $83m opening (5-day) weekend is just terrible.

Sure, it underperformed the $134m opening (5-day) weekend of Matrix Reloaded, and the $104m predicted opening.  But still, how many movies make $83m in their opening weekend?

AVATAR and 3D in general....

I don't recall a lot of heavy swears either.

Digital bits says the 3D version is coming this fall, but that it will be movie only (it will also be a timed exclusive with one of the HW vendors)... so 3D fans will probably be making their 4th Avatar expense in under 12 months when that hits.

1. Theatrical release
2. Original DVD/BD
3. Extended DVD/BD
4. 3D BD.

Now that's how you weaponize your movie sales!  I bet the 3D version will be the theatrical version, and they'll release an extended 3D version for Christmas next year.

 Ah...

1. Theatrical release
2. Original DVD/BD
  1.again Extended Theatrical Release
3. Extended DVD/BD
4. 3D BD.

Did anyone really go see it in theatres again?  I bet a lot of people will have spent money on three of the five above, but I wonder how many in particular went to see the extended re-release.  Does anyone have any numbers?

The Harry Potter Discussion Thread
Time

005 and anyone else who saw 7.1 and wants to discuss it:

I'm curious about Book 7, Movie 7.1/7.2 and the 3 Act Structure.  We can move this to the 3 Act Thread, but here's my simple question:

Does the 7th book have 3 clear Acts?  Does movie 7.1 have three clear acts?  In what way were the acts modified from the book to create 3 acts just for movie 7.1?

I think the screenwriters did the right thing by looking at every plot point and asked themselves "Does this affect Harry or his battle against Voldemort?"

I think this is linked with what you posted next: no foreshadowing.

The kids's's's''''s interaction with Snape seemed to be the first thing on the chopping block for most of the Book -> movie conversions.  And then given Snape's role in the finale... I think the movies so shortchanged Snape that it fundamentally changes how the viewer reacts to him at the end of the story.

I know the BTTF movies are compatible, but I didn't think the ride was.  Where did you hear that?

Oh and it would be a lot cheaper just for you and the 005's's's''s'ss''''ss''s' wife to come visit us in Denver and we can watch a marathon.  Now I just need more chairs.  :(  Too bad I'm broke from buying the first one.

Back to the Future: The Ride (SD, 31 min)—For me, this is probably one of the coolest featurettes I've had the pleasure in viewing. Fans can relive the thrill ride from the Universal Studios theme park, with the video everyone was forced to watch while waiting in line and then the ride itself. Also, this is the first time I've ever wanted D-Box Motion equipment because there is a special motion code just for this featurette.

Interesting.  I wonder if there are any confirmed sightings...  The only people I know who would know seem to think it's not coded yet.

Thanks for the offer. Honestly, Denver is one of those places that my wife and I have a desire to go for no particular reason (see also: Seattle), so if we do go, I'll let you know. *shrug*

Well, Frink is stobbing by in March-ish.  So don't come then.  Or do.  But besides my chair, why would you want to come to Denver?
