Here's a few updates. The pastoral is now 3/5 of the way completed. The other 2/5 is the trickiest part. The following are the good, 3/5 portion, and are finished. This means the 1982 audio in full stereo.

The next part I will upload is the 2/5 portion, with the '41 mix in the L channel and the '82 mix in the R channel, so people can see where I am.

Aha! (rimshot)

In all seriousness, what do people think of the scans so far? They seem less crisp than what I think all of us are used to (because they aren't taken from the o-neg, but from a print), but for me, I think the saving grace will be the fact that they don't have the stupid blended fields and the inherent motion blur that comes with that.

I know what you mean about the red color. In fact, I'm none too hot on using any of the LD/VHS/broadcasts as a source because I don't think they got them right. I plan on using my eyes and balancing things based on how they compare to some IB Tech slides/film segments, original and concept artwork, and some cel setups I have. I'll probably play with it some today, so we'll see if there is some other color besides "Redvision" in there...

OK, here's a few seconds of test footage from reel 2. Looks like it still needs some more clean-up work, but other than that it looks pretty promising. This is with no stabilization, clean-up, dust removal, etc. - just Filmguard applied to the print.

(By the way, I've been told that it is better if you download, rather than stream it. It requires the Lagarith codec, available here:  http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html)

Ooh, that cover art is nice. Would you mind posting a link to it when you are finished? I'm working on one, too, that is reminiscent of the old '82 poster - when I'm finished I'd be happy to post it here...

Also, you should check out the Song of the South preservation thread that is here. At the moment, my 16mm print is being prepped for scanning and I should have the first test pictures very soon.

As to the colors of Fantasia, no, I have not found an alternate-BD source. Is there something really wrong with the colors of the BD? To me they seemed OK, but Fantasia is not as much of my forte as some other movies might be.

I know. I'm working on getting it all finished up. I hate to be "one of those people" who starts a project, has a quick spurt of production and then gets caught up with other things, but believe me, this will see the light of day.

At this point, it's probably looking like a mid-late summer release, but it will be this year, once the school year winds down and I get some more free time to work on it.

One of the things that is bogging it down is my work on Song of the South, which you may or may not be interested in, Video Collector. Also, if you don't mind sharing your cover, that would be amazing!

Cool beans. It looks like you might have convinced me - 1080p it is (provided my computer doesn't go into ultra-slow mode).

In other news, I have been talking with poita, and it seems that reel 2 may have been taken straight from the negative. He said that it was really good color and quality, so at least reel 2 will look awesome! :)  He hasn't gotten to reel 3 yet (he's still inspecting, so it may be a while) but we are still on track for screenshots/test capture grabs sometime next week...

Definitely, and I'm not going to get rid of the project files, and who knows - maybe in the future I will have the ability to work with 1080p. How would I compare the 720p resize to the source? Just to clarify, you mean resizing to 720 and then comparing the selected frame with a frame right on the film, right? Either way, 720 is (as Harmy has pointed out) is really, really good quality...

I don't think my computer can handle 1080p. What do you guys think - should a 2k scan provide enough data for 720p? That would be ideal; poita seems to think that maybe because it is presumably a 35mm -> 16mm reduction that it won't be as sharp, but I don't know that it is a reduction. Did they ever strike 16mm prints from 35mm negatives?

Head over to Myspleen and search for "Song of the South."   :)

By the way, progress has been made on the transfer of my 16mm version of Song of the South. I have sent it to poita and we are working on cleaning it and getting some test frames, probably sometime around next week. As soon as I get the test frames, I'll post them here, so that everybody can see the quality, which I hope will be miles better than the bootlegs, even though it is not a real 35mm scan...
