+1 - I'd be glad to kick in some cash for a rescan, if that's possible...
I think what Spaced Ranger is getting at is the aberration in the halos of color, not the Tech process. IIRC, the release of Rope had a lot of problems with halos of misaligned color (from shrunken layers of film) but the problem Spaced Ranger ran into before was CA from the scanner. I don't know whether this print has CA (looks like it, as the shrinking of layers usually isn't that easy of a fix) or whether it is misaligned color, but either way, it is miles better than what's out there now.
Ditto. I would be more than willing to help clean it up.
Not stepping on toes at all! I'm always curious about preservations, regardless of where they come from.
Where can it be downloaded? Do you have a copy?
Is it available somewhere? I'd like to read about it and/or see what I could use as references...
edit: ignore my previous comment about the "other" print looking better - wasn't quite awake and didn't realize that other print was mine! :S
Is that for sure an IB print? If so, are ther more references? We would have no problem adjusting our color (and matching it) to that print if it is a true IB Tech...
edit: Also, it could just be my eyes, but it looks a little hot, like somebody boosted the saturation. What does everybody else think? If you click on the images, they link to an image hosting sit with comparisons, but I have to say that I think the "other" shots look better, simply because they are less boosted. That's not to say my eyes couldn't be wrong, though...

If you would prefer, I can scan the film in sequential mono, i.e. the scanner captures three images per frame to a mono sensor, pulsing the RED, GREEN and BLUE lights separately to give you a separation transfer.
This gives the highest colour fidelity possible, but means you do have to reassemble the colour so to speak.
Let me know, it takes longer obviously, but I can scan it that way.
Hmmm... What would this do for us? How would we reassemble the separations?
ALOL. Following a thread (Harmy's) and then putting him (presumably) on ignore. :D
Yeah. If we're talking about the Hirschle one, the "rare British disc" he has is the Mentor cap, and I think the one I sent him. If you ask me, I don't think he has done any restoration work on video samples, just still frames.
If that's the Hirsch web page, it's a lost cause. I was in contact with him for a few years, and after donating time and some resources to him, I got nothing. I don't like to talk badly about people, but he is very, very flaky.
Wow, that is fantastic! That looks really, really good and really, really accurate!
OK, I've got another few questions now. Say we use 5-10 references per reel. Is that enough? Can they be merged or averaged? If we use those references, do we still go shot-by-shot or could we do a whole reel with those settings? Now my curiosity is piqued!
Here's some of my collection of color references. These are just grabs I got from the internet; nothing special.
However, would you mind recoloring that frame to match this one: http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff493/ww123-2008/Camera%20Awesome%20Photos/iPod%20touch%20uploads/Song%20of%20the%20South%20Color%20References/null_zpsd71c3fed.jpg
The only reason I ask is because that frame still seems really dark (although that could be because we haven't brightened it yet), but I wonder if they used different color timing for each of the sequences (ie: a brighter approach for the first segment, a darker for the third segment, and a more natural for the second segment).
Very interesting. As far as "by-eye vs. by-ref" we'll have to make do with what we have - I'm going to be working on making the references available, which actually leads to my next question - if I used a grey card, possibly scanned in with the film/cels/other material, would it make the colors somewhat accurate, or would we just be comparing one scanned-in, incorrect color source with another?
As far as a list, no, we do not have a list (as we don't know where to start). What would you suggest.
Also, thanks for contributing, especially on the open forum like this. I hope that this project will be out in the open so that others can duplicate the methods we come up with.
So from that point, how do you make the scene brighter and crisper (or do you)? When looking closely, I can see the shadows and detail in the picture on the right, but to a quick glance, the left looks better, due to the contrasty nature, I presume.
When you talk about using Curves, I assume that is a control available in most video editing programs? I am using PFClean, but have no idea where it might be in that; I only know where it is in Photoshop...

I might be able to do it. I use Sony Dvd Architect for my own projects, so...
I'll keep you posted!
That would be kind of cool...
I'll definitely try to do that. I'll need some help when I get to that point, though - don't author DVDs too often...
Sure, I have some references like that, but I'd be glad to get some more, provided they don't go out of my price range. I'll see if I can pick them up...
That looks nice! I'm convinced now that this can be a really, really nice release. I was thinking that this would just come out OK because of print limitations, but I see now that what we have is so much better than what is already out there. Look at the detail in his collar, for example. That detail is just not there in other transfers.
Great work, Spaced Ranger. Thanks for the help so far! :D

Woah! That's killer! Too cool, definitely!!
Great work!
You know, as I'm thinking about this, I may want to do 2 different releases - the first raw, as it comes, and the second cleaned up and color corrected. That way, other people can do their own corrections and changes as they see fit.
I don't know. I'm not too keen chopping bits out that don't fit without doing something to try to fix it - I may use the original score to fill in gaps or a different, period recording but I don't know. Like you say - this would be a lot easier with a bootleg... :)
OK, here's the Bald Mountain/Ave Maria bit. At this point, I'm pretty happy with the Bald Mountain segment except for a few places. The first place is the cymbal crashes as the skeletons change from negative to positive images as they ride through the sky to Chernabog. I feel like the crashes are a hair off - which may have been authentic to the '82 release; I remember some people saying that certain parts the Kostal score was right on, other times it was way off, and this could have been one of those times. In any case, I will probably move it so that the crashes line up better with the flashes.
The other part I'm not too thrilled with is the section after the tubular bells. The bells line up OK, but everything after that is a nightmare to deal with. I've already got it spliced in about 100 sections after that, and stuff still isn't lined up right. I'll keep working on it, but I'm definitely open to suggestions as to how to line things up/improve things.
Here's the video: https://vimeo.com/65872660
That's actually the same CD I have. The reason I thought that it might have been edited for the record is because I assume that when they pressed the CD, it was so much of an afterthought that the record set run-time probably took priority.
I'll keep fiddling with it, and see if I can have another video up tonight. Meanwhile, any suggestions as to what to do with the middle Pastorale segments?
Here's parts 2-3 of the Pastoral. It's kind of a mess. I don't know whether they cut the film further at the spots where the '82 mix drops out, or if that was editing to fit it onto the soundtrack record... Either way, it is not going to be fun. I'm having the same issues with Night on Bald Mountain...
Also, my thoughts on a "Sunflower" scene are this: since they wouldn't have been present in the '82 version, I think I would even have cut it had it been present on the BR.
