The Greatest Song Ever - Phase One ***FREE PUPPIES FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, SEVERE BEATINGS TO NON-PARTICIPANTS!!***
Time

Because it is obvious that OT.com's posters know what the hell is up with everything, I decided to start a quest to determine what the greatest song of all time is. Because we are not animals, there are parameters:

1) Your nominations come in the form of a top ten list - these are the ten songs you think deserve consideration for the greatest song of all time. Order your ten however you wish.

2) I recommend nominations which earned a spot no lower than #40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. If the nominated song in question missed the Top 40 list, it may be allowed IF the song is deemed recognizable enough.

3) One song per artist, please. (At least in Phase One - when we get to Phase Two this may change) This does not apply to different posters - one poster may have "Let It Be" while another may have "Hey Jude", for instance.

4) Duplicate nominated songs must be replaced. The first poster to nominate the duplicated song may keep it - the burden of replacement falls upon the poster(s) who used the same song.

5) Until sufficient time has passed to allow for as many nominations as possible, you may edit your original nominations as often as necessary.  When Phase II is announced, your nominations are then locked in. This will hopefully allow you to remember every deserving song you can think of - an off-the-cuff list may not reflect all of your favorites.

Those are the rules. Now, on to my nominations. In artist alphabetical order:

  1. Duran Duran, "Ordinary World"
  2. Electric Light Orchestra, "Don't Bring Me Down"
  3. James Ingram, "Just Once"
  4. Elton John, "Crocodile Rock"
  5. Howard Jones, "No One Is To Blame"
  6. Men At Work, "Overkill"
  7. Natalie Merchant, "Wonder"
  8. Prince, "Let's Go Crazy"
  9. Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody"
  10. Del Shannon, "Runaway"

Off-the-cuff. My own list is subject to change between now and Phase Two.

MURDER at the Sylvester Estate!
Time

"And now that all of Mr. Sylvester's guests have arrived and you're all suitably acquainted, please direct your attention to the video monitor. Mr. Sylvester has prerecorded some remarks which pertain to the reason you've been invited here this evening," Buskers announced.

"What video monitor?" asked zombie84.

As if in answer, two bookcases slid in opposite directions, revealing a 24" black-and-white Zenith TV set, set inside a console. A test pattern revealed the relative small size of the screen, especially in a room the size of the Libra room. Like everyone else, I moved towards the screen in hopes of a better view.

"That one. That's the video monitor," said Ric Olie.

The test pattern changed to a video feed. Sylvester. A collective gasp filled the room.

"Greetings, OT.com'ers. Most of you know me, all of you are at least aware of who I am. Some of you are teenagers, some of you are in your forties, some are in their thirties, some are in their twenties. Some are fifty or above. Some of you are tall, some of you are short. Some of you can be described as having average height. Some of you..." and it went on, in that same vein, for fifteen minutes. Bingowings actually went to the restroom and came back during that introduction.

"...left it at the moose lodge. But anyway, at this point you're all wondering what this is about. Tonight, I can assure you - there will be blood."

An uneasy silence filled the room.

"MUUURRRRDERRRRRRR!" Sylvester hissed in a loud whisper.

A frantic mutter filled the room. It didn't help that Frink and Olie were standing near each other saying "Murmur" over and over.

"Buskers - it's time."

Oh my God! I didn't even notice Buskers had slipped out of the room. What's going on? Are we all going to die? Did we spam up the board that much?

LOST
Time

They can play with his emotions right up to the finale and I won't care.  If in the end they don't let him find his redemption on the island, what is the point of the whole show?

Not every character will find redemption. That doesn't strike me as plot abuse - in fact, it stands to reason that some will pass and some will fail.

Mulling it over a bit, I see what you mean though. Sawyer's turn back to the dark wasn't terribly convincing. Maybe Jack should have retained more feeling toward Juliet in the buildup to her death, giving Sawyer more reasons to resent Jack. Maybe his action should have led directly to her death instead of he getting dragged down a hole by a chain.

I'm having hard time believing that Sayid, Claire, and Sawyer would actually join the Dark Side of their own free will.  Yes, I know that they've all lost the person they cared for most in the world.  Yes, I know that they blame people on the other team (Sayid blames Ben, Claire blames Kate, Sawyer blames Jack) but would they seriously trade-in their immortal soul?

If they don't believe in the concept, then why not? None of those three strike me as religious people. Well, Sayid was attending mosque, but that may have been part of his cover.

My wife reminded me that Claire and Sayid have been affected by the Man in Black and maybe they're not fully in control of their actions- maybe they're not all there, really.  I guess something like that is

1) required to make me believe that these people would make these kind of decisions
2) LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

It's just like any most other characters that turns to the Dark Side long term- The moment they actually turn the corner rings a little false.

Well, it's been established that pregnancy/motherhood doesn't go well with the island. Sayid was dead for two hours - maybe the island brought him back and the island's powers were tipped toward evil because of Jacob's death.

It may in fact BE lame, but the motivation has been shown. What's happened here hasn't been an ass pull IMO.

Especially Sawyer.  He's been such a good egg- responsilbe leader of the 1974 Losties for 3 years.  The "badboy" image he tried so hard to cultivate after the crash (and probably before) was a charade and once Kate and others forced him to reveal his true noble, yet tortured and a bit misguided, character... he's been one of the good guys.  Yes, I know Juliet's death would have been hard on him.  Yes, I get that he, in a moment of rage, would take it out on Jack.  But I can't see him joining MIB, or taking more permanent action against Jack and the "White team".

Sawyer has been the most mishandled character on the show. He was a true dark character from the start of the show, but my best guess is they softened him up for two reasons:

  1. The viewers like the character/the actor
  2. They didn't want lost to turn into some Lord of the Flies type of thing from the start, with Jack leading the good guys and Sawyer leading the bad guys. Looks like it's going to end up that way anyway.

(Also, when Dogan told Sayid that his scale had tipped to "evil" it reminded me of the Treehouse of Horror episode where the Crusty doll tries to kill Homer because it was accidentally switched from "good" to "evil.")

 You meant "Krusty".
