It’s become all too common for people to see a critique and assume that means you hate the thing you’re critiquing.

I have major problems with the final scenes of the finale, but I genuinely, thoroughly enjoyed the vast majority of everything that came before then, and that rings true for the series as a whole - I have some major issues with it from time to time, and I’m going to speak to those issues when they arise, but on the whole? I’m enjoying it and will keep tuning in.

I was enjoying the episode just fine until Luke showed up to do the same eye-roll videogame bullshit that Vader did in Rogue One, and then he took off his cloak and looked like a videogame character, and then it just kept going and didn’t resolve the much more interesting conflict that had just arisen (Mando vs. Bo-Katan and the implications of that whole thing), nor even make it a cliffhanger - it’s just…forgotten about while Luke takes Grogu and then…credits.

And then the post-credits scene happened and I just checked out. I have zero interest in the Continuing Adventures of Boba Fett, so that just left an even worse taste in my mouth.

The horror-movie angle with the Darktroopers and the Mando v. Gideon fight were all excellent though, no complaints with all of that. And, again - super invested in whatever ends up happening between Mando and Bo-Katan with the Darksaber.

I have a strong feeling we’re going to eventually learn that this episode was in the middle of production when the pandemic lockdowns hit. The last 15-20 minutes just smacks of being cobbled together from disparate elements they had to film piecemeal over the spring/summer without having everyone together all at once. It wasn’t just Luke that looked like absolute ass - Pedro Pascal’s head looked very awkwardly cut and pasted into the scene, and he looked way too different from when he last removed his helmet just an episode or two ago, which doesn’t make sense unless there was a LONG time between filming those two.

Also, super irritated that the Mando/Bo-Katan conflict that had just presented itself was put on pause for Luke to show up and do his twirly light show, only for them to never unpause it, leaving that thread dangling without it feeling like a proper cliffhanger.

Also, you do realize that all model shots in the original trilogy were filmed using a “computerized rig,” too, right? That was one of the major advances ILM made in 1975/76 and why the space effects in the original SW stood out to audiences in 1977.

Those are pretty much my feelings about this set as well (though I still haven’t seen it with my own eyes so I’m not making any final judgments about it). I’ll probably either pick up this set on sale/used when the giant 4K box set comes out next year, or maybe I’ll get the giant box set, I dunno.

I’m not really in a huge rush to upgrade all my stuff to 4K, and 44rh1n’s excellent restoration of the FOTR EE Blu-Ray (and the Blu’s of the others) will continue to serve me well until then.

I mean…I don’t see how that changes anything. How else do you think he lost the armor and got scarred to shit?

There are plenty of 4K upscalers. They just all tend to require a lot of processing power, time, and a LOT of hard drive space. Frankly I don’t think there’s much point, especially since 1080p already looks great on 2160p displays, unlike 720p on a 1080p display (which can look fuzzy since it’s not an integer scale).

And it seems to me like everyone who’s claiming this is using screenshots of shots that are VFX composites as evidence, even if they don’t appear to be VFX shots at first glance (remember, many shots are composites because of the height differences of the characters). Every screencap I’ve seen of a shot that is 100% for sure not a VFX/composite shot definitely looks like a true 4K scan to me.

I think people are really underestimating how many composites and VFX shots are in these movies, and it’s already been stated that such shots are either 4K scans of 2K film-out negatives, or upscales of the 2K DI.

So yeah - so far as I can tell, everything that is not a VFX or composite shot is true 4K, and everything else is some form of upscale.

There’s also the fact that these movies were shot Super 35 and cropped, meaning they’re inherently softer/less detailed than anamorphic 35mm would be.

Of course I could be wrong and I’ll absolutely eat my words if it’s shown definitively that this is entirely an upscale.

Yeah, take the PAL DVD9 720x576 video track, change the framerate from 25fps to 23.976fps, upscale that, then pair it with the NTSC DVD9 Dolby 5.1 audio track. Upscaling based on the downscaled NTSC release just seems like a bad place to start.

There’s already an MKV floating around made from the PAL DVD9 that basically does everything I mentioned minus the upscaling part.

The authors of the books would push back on the “hard science fiction” label, but overall yeah, that’s largely accurate.

Super bummed that we won’t get the final 3 books on screen, but (from what I hear, I’m not that far in the books yet) the sixth book serves as a conclusion before a large time skip and a very different final trilogy, so maybe it’s for the best. And maybe this means a few years down the line, if there’s demand for it, they’ll get the cast back to do the last 3 books in some form.

True, but I do agree that it’s not really part of the scope of a project in which the primary goal is to hybridize official versions. The Emperor thing is an exception (to me) because the 2004 version just looks awful.

What? How is he doing this in any way? He’s saying that the approaches other edits have taken didn’t work for him so he’s going to try a different approach. He’s not saying the edits are bad or that the editors taking these approaches have done a bad job.

If you’re going to be working on projects in a highly collaborative area like fan edits (or any other creative endeavor), you gotta have thicker skin than that, man.
