I thought it was fair when I first saw it, but after three more viewings, it's grown on me. I find myself saying, "It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care" all the time, because it's so true.

Yeah, I know. We picked it up for my brother in law for his birthday, but it turns out a friend of his got it for him as well. We can't find the receipt so we may be stuck with it. And we only just realized it is the full screen version (only in tiny letters on a sticker on the front of the box; nowhere else on the set, even on the back specs sheet, does it tell the aspect ratio).

That's irresponsible packaging, right there. It's strange, since my set has the 1:85:1 aspect ratio listed in the specs. Yet another reason why the movie industry needs to quit producing fullscreen format. *restraining myself from raging on about pan and scan for an indefinite amount of time*

I don't have cable at home, so I'm waiting for the non-hyperspace versions to come up. If I were up on campus and it wasn't spring break, I could tell you, but even seeing the first two so far, I can tell you I'm going to be going into a full geek high by the time I see the end of Episode 25...

I have, and I loved every minute of them. I was so taken with the first book that I had to break down and buy the last two in hardcover when they came out, which I don't typically do. The climax of the whole trilogy was so dark and brutal that I can't wait to read it again.

I agree...I never thought I would enjoy them, but after the two episodes with Mace Windu fighting on Dantooine, I was hooked.

I've been reading Cornwell's stuff since 1997; that's why I asked. I don't think I've yet read one of his books that I disliked.

You're going to have to buy a region-free player to watch your Sharpe set, aren't you?

I don't remember a whole lot about it, but I do remember that Jules and Verne figured heavily in it, and that it didn't have the Back to the Future feel to it, having a Saturday morning feeling to it (which was probably the point...).

I agree, though...Back to the Future 4 should never be made, and I'm glad there's been no talk about it...those movies defined my childhood, and as much as I would love to see Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox and the DeLorean again, the story is over, and I'm glad Zemeckis seems to know that. Besides, even though I enjoyed it at seven years old, the cartoon show was horrible, proving that any attempts to go beyond the trilogy just won't set well with me.

I had a period where I opposed the DVDs, but that passed a few weeks before they were released. I went to Best Buy the day after they came out, and after seeing the asteroid chase scene on the big widescreen TV there, complete with the 5.1 surround sound, I couldn't leave without a set (besides, it was about $10 cheaper to buy it during it's first-week sale than afterwards).

My verdict? I'm more or less okay with them, excepting the whole film preservation issue, and the really bad lightsaber fixes in ANH. They're great to watch in context with the whole saga (at least when you take the spoilers for ROTS), and I can understand the changes in light of the prequels, because it certainly adds a new element to the story. Does that excuse Lucas not admitting that the original versions exist? No, but I'm content to leave that as an issue that Lucas will have to face up to eventually for the time being. I guess that's because I have my bootleg originals and the box set, and at least have a choice in which ones I watch. If you can stand the changes (not necessarily liking them, mind you), go ahead and buy the official set for the amazing sound and picture quality; and, if you have the extra money floating around, get a set of the original versions transferred from laserdisc. That way, you'll be okay until the originals do come out (fingers crossed, because if I have kids, they're going to see the originals first, like I did, and then the entire saga in order the way Lucas currently says he wants it).

I'm reading Matthew Stover's Shatterpoint right now, but I'm really deep into The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It's really unclassifiable in terms of genre, so I won't even try to explain it, but if you're into dark fantasy and/or epic quests, I recommend it. I'm not a King fan, and I'm still surprised that I'm so addicted to the series.

I just sat through my second viewing of the Holiday Special tonight...mind you, it was eased by watching it with a group, but still words fail me. My friends and I came up with this scheme of hooking up a microphone to someone's laptop and passing the mic around as we watched it, essentially recording our own commentary. It was wild and hilarious for the first forty-five minutes, but eventually it got really quiet and our jokes became forced as time went on. But it was great (what I wish we could do is save it as a DVD audio track, sync it up with the Holiday Special itself, and make a whole new copy of my disc, including optional commentary). If anyone really wants to listen to it, I'm thinking of making a low bitrate version available on my web space, just because it was so fun to record.

Thinking about Road House got me to thinking about Sam Elliot which got me to thinking about...a Criterion edition of Gettysburg. The current DVD treatment of the movie is okay, but I think it would be nice to have something a little better.

And, oh how I wish Paramount would give us a tenth anniversary Special Edition of Braveheart next year.
