UPCOMING DVDs
Time
I knew Lucas said he would never release the Holiday Special...I guess it's just wishful thinking. I mean, I have my DVD bootleg, but I feel like if the other Star Wars television releases are all on DVD, well, it's kind of a shame. Though watching a bootleg of a second or third generation videotape does put one more into a seventies mood than a digitally remastered and enchanced version would do. It's a shame GL won't fess up to his mistakes.

I guess you're right. Though I honestly think that Star Wars wouldn't be half as fun if there wasn't more to it than the OT (even though I obviously love the OT dearly).

And Sessler: I'm not a huge comics person, and since I only started dabbling in them recently, I missed out on a lot of the Empire and Republic story arcs, so I'm a bit afraid to try them. What are they like?

I had only seen the OT of empire and jedi, once beforehand. On rental VHS tapes. They had the interviews in the front.

It wasn't until I bought that DVDs that I saw the SE changes to them.

But in terms of quality, the film looks like it was made yesterday.

And I find that 90% of the changes, I can live with, as they don't affect the plot, or pacing.

it's just that last 10% that are not needed (Jabba in ANH, Greedo, Hayden) and can ruin it for most people.

I completely agree with you, and welcome to the boards, Skyman!

I never thought I'd get this interested in the Clone Wars after seeing Episode II, but it really sounds like they have picked top-quality writers to tell the stories, even if the marketing ploys are a bit out there.

Has anyone read the first Obsession comic yet? Is it any good? I know this is a thread for novel discussion, but there is a lot more to the EU than just the books. And besides, while we're on the topic of the Clone Wars, we might as well add other mediums into the mix.

Hal, you did exactly what I did at Best Buy on 22 September. I was coming home for a four-day weekend from school, and when I stopped at Best Buy, they had the huge Star Wars display and were playing ESB on the large widescreen TV with the couch and the surround speakers. I sat down, box set in my hand, watching the asteroid chase, stood back up walked over to the sci-fi/fantasy section, took a look at the Fellowship of the Ring Extended, went back over the the TV, watched the Vader/Palpatine scene, and then walked back over to the Star Wars display. The sound and picture quality was so good! And the set was $42.99 on sale! And I had the money! And if I waited, and decided to buy it another time, I would have to pay $51.99, and I knew I didn't want to do that! Long story short, I bought the trilogy, but I also have Rikter's bootlegs, so it's not like I'm allowing myself to be brainwashed by the new versions. I mean, everytime a change comes on the screen, I playback the original in my head. I despair, but yet I don't think the new versions are complete sh*t...the only reason they are such a travesty to purists such as ourselves is that the originals aren't being preserved.

Yes, Hal...you are stronger than me in resisting in the temptation, but...Dolby 5.1 EX!! That's all I have to say...

Here and there, Gundark. Classes started back up, and things got busy. I couldn't stay away any longer.

Well, J***** for one was banned, and Shimraa left.

Jimbo was banned? Is it okay for me to verbally breathe a sigh of relief? I don't even think I need to ask why he was banned...

Just a thought. The purple looks fine as is, I mean I don't dislike it strongly.

Just seemed childish and silly especially for Samuel Jackson (who doesn't belong in Star Wars to begin with).

I see your point. It's a good suggestion, and it does look out of place being used by Samuel L. Jackson.

What a nice Christmas gift. Actually, if I didn't already have a copy, I'd love it if a friend secured a bootleg of it for me, and if I could copy DVDs, I'd be handing it out as well.

What's this newsgroup? How would one access it?

Those Pesky Soundtracks
Time
Since I missed out on the major spoiler, 'The Emperor's Death' on the ROTJ soundtrack release back in 1983 (wasn't born yet), I'll have to make up for it by buying the soundtrack and reading the track listing before the movie comes out. Seeing the track record on the soundtrack titles, I wouldn't be surprised to see ROTS have a track entitled, 'Mace Windu is Thrown Around by Anakin and Electrocuted by the Emperor.' Either that or 'Padme is Force-Choked.' (not that those are actually going to be in the movie, or at least, not that I know of)

Yeah, talk to Rikter...that's where I got my copy over the summer. Regardless of how cheesy it is, it's definitely a must-see...I'm planning to show mine to a group of friends on campus in the next couple of weeks.
BTW, I printed out a Holiday Special cover yesterday and slipped it in a blank DVD case...now it'll be displayed as another part of my collection, which will really baffle anyone who takes a look at them on the shelf.

You're not the only one. Though I did end up buying it for the cheapest price I could get the day I bought it (22 September). Best Buy had it for $42.99, so I don't feel that bad about it, though I did go through the entire summer here on the forums saying I wasn't going to buy it, so I do feel a bit hypocritical. On the other hand, I have done my part to preserve the originals at the same time by getting laserdisc rips from Rikter.

I think what finally provoked me to go out and buy it, and to leave the forums for as long as I did was that Star Wars was becoming more of a burden to me than a joy. This whole struggle to boycott or not to boycott the official release wore me out, quite frankly. That, and life became a bit to busy to spend time on the message boards like I did over the summer. But just because I bought (and actually enjoy) the Special Edition DVD release doesn't mean that the Original Trilogy cause is no less important to me. So I'm back, and hope everyone can forgive me for coming off so hypocritical and flip-floppish.

Edit: Nice shirt, by the way
