WTF is “good enough”? A slippery slope, no doubt.
Only half-joking when I say I hope fame hasn’t got to your head.
Your attention to detail has served you well

If the sync is quickly resolved, who cares? The BD is missing random frames. Maybe which one he duplicates can be optimized (static shot, etc) and get it back in line faster, [edit]: but it’s not a big deal.

Man, Harmy, I think I’m more nervous about all the publicity than you are. Or maybe I’m just more paranoid 😃

I’m quite sure that there would have already been some (legal) emails if the higher-ups really had a problem with this. I am just glad that everyone is getting informed that there is a way to enjoy Star Wars the way it is supposed to. If someone would even plan on harming Harmy (he he!), there would be a major poopstorm incoming. Hell… even my 64 year old dad started smiling after Han shot first.

Yeah, we go through the small amount of paranoia every time an article is posted. I think Disney probably realizes that we would go from a community that is 100% guranteed to buy whatever OOT they someday put out, to a group who never pays for a single SW branded piece of merchandise again. It’s hard to believe that we could become more cynical than we already are, but that’s the way it would happen. 😃

I still get comments saying “What’s this about? The original is out on DVD just the way it looked like before they remastered it for SE”.

Which is the other rather brilliant reason the GOUT was probably released: to completely sabotage the reputation of the OOT. There really are kids who seem to think the original state of Star Wars was a crappy ~240i video, until George selflessly rescued it in 1997 and brought it into the modern era of high quality picture and sound.

Looking for Trilogy Special Edition in good quality
Time

Rael said:

Hello. As the Special Edition from 1997 was the first time i ever saw Star Wars this version seems to be my favorite. I own it on VHS only, as it sadly have’nt be relased on DVD. Anyone knows where i can search for a good quality rip so i can have it also in “digital” form and not wear out my vhs tapes any time i want to watch it?

I would recommend Team Blu’s upscale of the SDTV rip. Also, Harmy reconstructed it based on the blu-ray as a starting point (and apparently Adywan did so for ESB, but I don’t think it’s easily available anymore). For RoTJ, there are only the straight SDTV captures, I think, and they look pretty bad.

The workprint looks great! Although one thing that stands out is that it is noticeable whenever a shot switches to the 35mm source. I think the colors look a tad different when it switches. Will this be corrected in the final 2.0 version?

It will probably stay the same, and be worked on more in the v.2.5 release.

Though the 35mm shots may stay the same, he suggested that the rest of the footage just has the 1.0 color for the workprint and may be updated.

What were the differences in ESB mono?

Isn’t it similar to the 70mm?

I don’t know about the 70mm, but the biggest differences I can remember between the Mono and the Stereo mix are the following:

 • the voice announcing “The First Transport is away” is different and is shifted in time.
 • You can hear C-3PO arguing louder and more clearly with Chewbacca when they’re entering the Freezing Chamber.

I’m sure there’s other stuff as well, but I can’t remember. I do have a L/R comparison MP3 lying around somewhere if you’re interested.

This list includes the 70mm audio changes (first transport being one of them) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vhUSuVBoA_EPo97_qGRW5u_Hw7IAbpexg7uS7vVV3Hs/edit#gid=6

edit: Sorry, Harmy. We’ve officially drifted off topic. But if anyone isn’t familiar with that comprehensive list of changes, it’s a valuable link for each of the films.

Hello!

Im new here and so I apologize if this question is an old one, or if for whatever reason you find this offensive:

Is the current Despecialized Edition of Return of the Jedi the [for all intents and purposes] final version? Or are you still working on it? Im very excited to download the trilogy and I plan on burning them individually onto BR disks and creating custom menus and whatnot for them, so Im just curious to know if I should wait off on Jedi for the time being if there is another version being worked on.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

As you might see from the last few posts, the current circulating version of Jedi is a workprint. It has a (nearly invisible) frame counter for the sake of providing feedback. It also has an extra ‘warning’ type thing during the Fox logo, and a few minor errors. I wouldn’t burn it unless you need to in order to watch. But you can still work on your menus while you wait for the real release.

I think you’ll find that ‘Final’ is a tricky word around here. There’s no telling with certainty how long projects will go on. But if you end up burning the 2.5 (or 2.0) copies, you’ll certainly have a clean, polished trilogy. Just back up your project files for creating your disc menus in case you want to update in the years to come.

Hey Harmy,

I’m sure you’re already aware of this, but there is a closeup of Luke on the Tatooine Skiff that looks worse than a TeleSync. It only lasts a few seconds, but man does it shock the eyes!

No idea what you’re talking about - there is only one such shot of Luke at 0:30:34 that’s been replaced with a 35mm source, because a big chunk of it was missing in the SE but it looks awesome - you can tell it’s a bit less detailed than the other shots, if you’re really looking for it but to me it seems to fit in perfectly, so you can’t be talking about that one.

Harmy: Have you gotten a better source for the “At last we have the mighty Chewbacca” shot, that you originally did some neat smoke effects for to mask the GOUT? I know you dropped 1.0 shots in for most of the subtitles in the workprint. So, not sure if it will be upgraded.

Of course I have - I mean, have you seen the workprint?

I thought it looked a bit fuzzy, but didn’t compare it to 1.0 and thought you were using 1.0 for all shots with subtitles. Presumably, comparing them would be night and day? I guess I didn’t appreciate the fact that it really was a smokey shot even in its original state.

‘Could you be… more specific?’

Is it a despecialized shot?

Okay, I think I’m a pretty easy reviewer, I don’t have doubleofive’s gallery memorized or anything. On the other hand, I don’t watch this particular film as much as the others, so there may be things I spotted that have always been there 😉

2:06 death star moves as screen pans down (was it always like this?)

Yes.

5:29 matte paining extension still there?

Nope. This is the regular big door. Not the supersized door.

Hey. Harmy has been working on these for a number of years. We don’t distribute files here, and we are more about discussion than giving explicit directions for newcomers. But any of big time public torrent trackers will have them if you search for ‘Harmy’ or ‘Despecialized’. If you aren’t used to torrents, general ‘how do i use torrents’ guides that you might find on google would be applicable to this.

More praise for Despecialized! Glad to see the word getting out before TFA.

Big time love for this site and Harmy and all involved with working on these restorations. Jeremy Jahns has a massive Youtube following.

50K views on that video and one of the top replies told people to come here to get the files. Brace yourselves and get some copy/paste responses ready.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

There already is. (See title of thread.)

Me?

Yes. I suppose the people who are fine with general spoilers, but not to the point of people actually discussing the film they have just seen in very explicit detail, are going to either have to just play nice in the other thread or simply avoid internet discussion of TFA for a few days.

Some people might not see the movie for the first time until weeks later, painful as that sounds. They will simply have to tough it out.

Another TFA thread is only going to cause more clutter and confusion around here. Tweaking the title, as was done when the trailer dropped, should be enough.

Well, the thread is called “THE FORCE AWAKENS (EPISODE VII) DISCUSSION” so I’d be kinda weird if we couldn’t discuss The Force Awakens in the The Force Awakens discussion thread.
You could put some emphasis on it being a “spoiler thread” though, just in cast.

The only issue is that many of the non-spoiler thread people avoid everything. So if there are people that keep up with the news yet haven’t seen it, they have no specific thread. Or, they need to be extra cautious about what they read in this one, and what they post in the other one.
