The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

The only change I would insist on is this: re-instating the Fox Fanfare. Even if it’s just the music over a black screen, as long as the timing matches the other films. The movie felt a little naked without it.

I recently read descriptions of all the deleted scenes, and I don’t think any entire scenes need to be restored. What I would do is re-instate some brief shots that were cut (the Constable on Jakku for example). Basically anything that would give the movie just a little more breathing room, to slow down the pace just a tad.

Overall I loved the theatrical cut, and I don’t think it needs an overhaul.

Not sure if this has been posted in this thread before: http://www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-the-force-awkens-deleted-scenes/

But I think most of the cuts sound like they were good calls. A lot of the Leia ones were probably due to the acting involved, but the script sounds PT-like as well, if the novelization is anything to go by.

I’ll certainly be curious to see a lot of these edits if we get a chance (especially the weird ESB alternate angle idea. Damn that would’ve been controversial). But I don’t think I’ll end up wanting most of it included, aside from stuff that better sets up the state of the Resistance and gives some better impact to the destruction of NotCoruscant.

The fact that we’ve received no comment rejecting the idea of releasing the unaltered films also makes me wonder if they’re potentially waiting to announce a release.

That right there. Optimism. 😉

Hah. I think it just means that regardless of their decision, they’re not stupid enough to directly denounce their fans the way George would.

My other question is; what if some of the adjustments Lucas made to the films are good? I love the old school puppet graphics much more than cgi, but the lightsaber thing … surely we don’t wanna see a dodgy yellow flare?

With love and light, Richie

If the yellow flare was in the original, it stays in this version as Harmy is aiming to preserve the original theatrical editions in HD.

If you want a version of the film that keeps some of the special edition alterations then i recommend you check out the semi specialized edits by KK650 http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/kk650s-Star-Wars-Saga-Regraded-and-Semi-Specialized/id/15637

Yes. Or Hal9000’s.

Rich: Either way, just don’t expect Harmy to do it. It’s not the goal of the project. And the fact of the matter is that everyone will want different changes included in their ‘semi-specialized’ versions. There’s no objective line to draw. For instance, a couple days ago, I decided I wanted to watch a semi-specialized version that has zero of the Tatooine CGI animals in it. One doesn’t exist, so I made my own.

But yes, I think it is a case of mis-remembering when it comes to the lightsaber clashes. See here: https://picasaweb.google.com/102542760950977079734/StarWarsSpecialEditionChangesHD#5553982793858346322

It was the final release of the OOT on home media, up until they were released again in 2006. The GOUT was insulting, but it was a release of the unaltered films on DVD. Had he still stood by his belief that the original films should never be seen ever again and would eventually deteriorate with the VHS tapes, then he would not have released the GOUT.

I still believe he meant it in 1995, regardless of the fact that the GOUT ended up happening. That was a combination of pretending to cave to the demand for it and actually sabotaging perception of the quality of the OOT.

made sense given that if a 4K restoration of the SE would require reconstructing or redoing the CGI, and that maybe if they made a new version they’d take advantage of that opportunity to release a set including multiple versions of the films.

Agreed. There’s no straight forward path at all, given that a 4K 1997 edition would be seen as a strange move. So anything or everything are still potential outcomes as far as I’m concerned. But as far as Landis or other specific ‘leaks’, I doubt there’s any real information out there.

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?

Then, around the Special Editions, people started pushing the “A New Hope” name hard, and also episode numbers.

I thought the use of episode numbers only really started catching on when TPM was released, becoming firmly entrenched once AOTC arrived.

Yep. It was really quite brilliant what Lucas set up back in 1980. There are so many fans who accept the PT and give it a free pass, simply because it slots into the big gaping “Episode I to III” hole he left in 1980 and the saga feels incomplete to them starting at the actual beginning. Of course, it makes it all the more frustrating to those of us who are critical of it. But it was a bit of well-planned marketing genius to make the films seem necessary regardless of how they turned out.

Listening to the soundtrack last night, thanks Amazon.

Definitely better than John William’s PT scores and right up there with the originals. The score has such a freshness and familiarity at the same time

I couldn’t agree less. This for me was the weakest Star Wars score. Even the crappiest prequel moments had memorable themes. The only motifs that I recognised were from the OT.

Have listened to the CD a number of times. And I really do like the score, but as I’ve thought previously, it of course doesn’t have the iconic new moments that all of them, aside from perhaps III, had. I am not a score aficionado, but I don’t remember anything new and exciting about the Jedi score. Still, the reused parts were done well, there.

This one is very competent and matches the action well. Rey’s theme is great, and Kylo’s has grown on me quite a bit. His is like an old soundtrack that would be matched to a silent film, like Metropolis (not that I’ve heard the real original score).

But no, the score is not at the level that IV, V, I, and II were at.

Mikey? Hey buddy… can you come out and play? Please.

He said he would be busy with work stuff until sometime next year and that he wasn’t planning on seeing the film.

Mike isn’t a fan of the Star Wars franchise, he’s a fan of the 1977 film titled “Star Wars”.

You guys were going to do restoration of your newer Fuji print after this, I think. The main benefit, if I recall, was that they had a bit better color due to slightly less fade. Now that you’re using Dre’s color tools, the color in your current release looks great. Are there still major benefits to restoring your other set of prints? Is the picture quality any better?

Re-doing the CGI Jabba is unacceptable. Everyone here already knows that though.

The Jabba scene for me would be better as an extra on the DVD or BluRay, not as part of the film. Let alone the fact that most of the dialogue is in the Greedo scene, the CGI Jabba just looks bad no matter which version youre watching. The CGI would pass if the scene was an extra because it would just give people an idea of where Lucas would have gone if he had included the scene in the final film. But as inclusion in the final film, it just doesnt work IMO.

That’s exactly what that scene needs to be.

It was quite fun in 1997, before there were DVD extras as we know them today. It was a neat way of getting to see some unused footage of Han Solo on the big screen, and I was all for it, regardless of the way Jabba looked.

I remember when I first got a DVD with seamless branching to deleted scenes (the first X-men), thinking that this would be a great way to present Star Wars. But no. George’s threats on the final OOT VHS release, stating that it would never be seen again, were not just a marketing gimmick. It was the mind boggling truth.

That supposed journalist who claimed to see a newly revised ANH last spring was full of crap. He said it was the upcoming digital release and then just slightly altered the lie when that turned out to be essentially the 2011. ‘Oh, right. It must have been the 4K then.’ Also quite possible that he saw a fanedit of some sort. From what he wrote, he was not the brightest crayon in the shed.

My wife and I just finished re-watching the OT with Deathalo’s tweak of Harmy’s 2.0WP. It’s wonderful, everything I’ve been hoping for since I first watched the (very nice) 1.0 version.

Thank you Harmy, and every unbelievably dedicated fan whose work has helped make this possible. This is definitely my new go-to version of RotJ.

Great avatar. D’you like eels, boy?

Great edit!

I’m upgrading from V3 to V4 for Cloak of Deception. When making a BD in TSMuxer, do I still need to switch to “Do Not Change SEI and VUI data,” as was necessary for V3?

I already burned a copy, and it didn’t work. I think I switched it to “Do not change,” but I might have forgotten. If anyone who’s successfully burned a copy could chime in, it’d be much appreciated.

EDIT: I confirmed that I did switch it to “Do not change.” But, again, even doing this, the copy didn’t work.

Worked fine with the ‘do not insert’ or whatever for me. BUt those discs still have the green flashing on PS4s.

Hal9000: I’m not sure what you use to encode, but the error only happened for me when I used a specific version of Premiere (2012 I think) and it goes away with newer builds. Others online have experienced the same.

I mentioned this in my review of the movie in the review thread, but this movie’s biggest sin is taking the happy ending of Return of the Jedi away. Effectively retconning it out of existence.

While I still like the movie for what it is, a Star Wars film made by fans of Star Wars, I’ll probably end up considering it along the likes of Expanded Universe tales. Old EU already ripped away the happy end to Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is no different in that regard. The only difference is this tale is extremely expensive and stars (or cameos) the original protagonist actors.

It’s true that we never see the happy aftermath. But, as far as we know, there were times of relative peace. The Republic seems largely demilitarized if the destruction of a few key planets was enough to weaken it so substantially, indicating that it was probably very much peacetime until these events with the First Order, Knights of Ren, etc took place.

Even though the new EU does indicate that the war was not simply ended by the destruction of the second Death Star, it did indeed serve as the important blow that led to its unraveling. At the beginning of TFA, the remnants of the Empire were not in charge of the galaxy, so I don’t see anything being undone, unless you believed the events in RoTJ would completely secure peace in the galaxy for hundreds of years, etc.

Possibly - I’m actually considering doing multiple color-versions for v3.0 - an I.B. Tech version, which would keep the colors similar to v2.5 (and the I.B. scans) and a more balanced natural looking version (I’d need a more snappy name for it - maybe, since it seems like the Eastman prints were more like that, I could call it the Eastman version), so maybe I could also make a home-video version with colors closer to the most common VHS relases and the '81 crawl but I’m not making any promises 😉

I would be very excited to see those alternate color versions. Though, I think I will appreciate the IB version much more once it’s tightened up a bit as well.

The other versions, and the 81 crawl, may be nice to have for marathons as they will match the other two films better. Though I hate to admit that it’s a bit Lucasian to think that way. 😉

That’s actually an excellent idea.

I’d also consider deleting the Hosnian destruction entirely. It isn’t important for the plot (as far as I can remember) and the fact it can be seen from Takodana as well as the overall poor visuals of the destruction (it was made to look like the planets were all orbiting each other) really damaged my enjoyment of the movie.

I get what you’re saying. While it might be an okay idea for a standalone film, I have a feeling it will never mesh with VIII. Hopefully the Hosnian destruction is dealt with better in that one than it was in this.

I think Catbus and I gave the exact same opinions the last time this was asked a page or two back.

But I would strongly recommend the patched up version of the 2.0 WP that another user has made, to be used with the subtitle patch, over v1.0.

We will likely give the same opinions the next time it is asked as well. 😉

The only real problem with this patched WP, aside from some unoptimized color, is a bit of gate weave in a couple shots. But it beats the ‘GOUT-weave’ of v1.0. It’s one thing when the frame moves, it’s quite another when the blurry sarlacc moves while the rest of the frame stays still. And I say this with no disrespect to Harmy, as he obviously created the only watchable HD version of RoTJ ever made.
