Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

The question about you having a blu-ray drive should have probably said blu-ray player (like for your TV) instead. The whole point of the posts was to get a drive that works for a blu-ray player. I assume you do if you’re asking about a burner.

As far as burners go, if you wanted to do that, I got an external Samsung one for about $70 (at the time) that works great.

And as far as DVDs go, it depends what you mean. The AVCHD format is essentially the blu-ray format, but small enough to fit on a DVD-DL. So you burn it to DVD-DL and play on a blu-ray player. All Despecialized have come out in this format. RoTJ 1.0 is available this way and actually not as an MKV at all.

If you meant DVD format that plays in a DVD player (so, non-HD), Harmy’s versions are also available that way, but might be harder to find. There is at least one very poorly rendered version of his RoTJ out there in this format, but there should be a good one out there too.

Yes, 3.0 will come in 1080p. It would be interesting to know, in which GB regions the 1080p version will be released, BD-50 maybe? If it would be a BD-25 release, I would personally prefer 720p in this case because there is enough space for a higher video bit rate which is making a 1080p version obsolete, like the current releases. I did not notice any great difference (besides the colors!) on my calibrated TV comparing a screenshot from the official Blu Ray with a identical frame taken from the DE.

In that case, I would prefer a BD-50 1080p most definitely.

vfx: Here’s what I did with Harmy’s - include my 8 audio tracks and link to them in Encore as normal. I just reused AC3 tracks that load properly. Export the whole thing, open the image in AVCHD and replace the audio tracks and re-save it.

So after my last post, it occurred to me that pretty much everything is on the internet… I found a chapter list that is close enough to allow me to go through and mark the chapter breaks quickly, so I will add chapters. I also found reference earlier in this thread that the .mkv is a better file to transfer to blu-ray.
So I downloaded it and demuxed it with tsmuxer. Somehow, the main .dts audio tracks are showing as way longer than the film. Track 1 is over 3 hours long according to the time slider. However if I scrub through it there is no dead air, and there is no distortion like anything got stretched. Whether I bring it into Encore or VLC, it’s still an hour longer than the film on the timeline. All the .dts tracks are long. Track 1) 3 hrs. 10 min. Track 2) 3 hours 14 min. Track 3) 2 hours 51 min. Anyone know why this is happening and how I can mux them to the right length? I’d like to be able to offer a BD .iso with the best quality content. I’m assuming that the DTS-HD audio is superior to the Dolby Digital offered in the AVCHD, and that the video track in the .mkv, being over double the size of the AVCHD, is higher quality encoding, and worth exchanging… Thoughts?

First of all, I think you could’ve gotten the chapters from the MKV itself.

Secondly, if you’re using tsmuxer, just mux it directly into a blu-ray rather than demux it.

But that is a known problem for demuxing those dts files, for some reason. If you really need to demux and remux, say to make a menu or something, you can patch in the DTS files again correctly using multiAVCHD once your image is otherwise finished.

Thanks for the info on this too. It continues to amaze me the various nuances between releases and how difficult it is to get the versions back to the theatrical cut. I’ll be on the lookout for theatrical TPM. That is a shame about AoTC though. After reading your response I did a little digging and was surprised to learn about the multiple theatrical versions. Strange how the digital version and film version had differences. I had known there was a much shorter IMax version, but never about the difference between 35mm and digital. Maybe one day someone will find a reel of this movie too.

They simply had an extra 3 weeks to work on the digital version. Mccallum says that there are many visual differences between the two versions. The only one anyone ever noticed was the robotic hand movement (I suspect the speeder thing may be one of these changes).

Many people believe that the DVD release was the same as the DCP, but they patched over Natalie’s “Yes.” line after her fall due to the negative critical response. The ‘to be angry/human’ line was probably also to help address the response to their awkward relationship that somehow manages to exist after he says he’s a child killer. But it really only makes things worse.

They have two prints of Star Wars, I don’t know about Empire though. Either way, Lucasfilm will likely use the scan of Star Wars as a reference.

They probably still have the negatives (unaltered) in the vault at Skywalker Ranch.

If nothing else, there was an IB Tech of SW77 there. But I don’t know if that belonged to LucasFilm or George himself.

Despecialized: RotJ v1.0 or v2?

CatBus said:

The biggest issues with the workprint are that it’s missing some alien subtitles, and it contains a very obvious and fairly jarring special edition change. If you can’t get/make a modified workprint, go for v1 or wait for v2 proper. Image quality is a huge improvement in v2, but if the whole point of despecialized is to not have the special edition changes, the vanilla workprint really has an issue there.

Yep. But, to clarify, I wouldn’t burn either the 2-WP or 1.0 to put on my shelf right now. Just wait for 2.0, unless it is really your only way to watch and you don’t mind going through discs.

Can it still work if Obiwan and Yoda see the footage but Padme isn’t told? While the youngling drama itself is poorly executed (no pun etc), given that it happens in this edit, there’s something mildly satisfying about them realizing how much of a shithead Anakin is, and how badly they all screwed up. Leaving them potentially oblivious lets them off the hook.

but now im running into a 2nd hurdle. i guess the rotj 2.0 WP is an mkv file and wont burn onto a standard dvd (side note: now this may be opening a whole other can of worms but based on the size why cant it burn onto a regular dvd?).

but i read the “read me” file and it says that it should work in my usb drive. however even though my usb drive has 14 gigs free space it wont fit for some reason? has anyone else seen this? and can someone please point me in the right direction.

Regards, joey

Not the right format for DVD.

FAT32 formatted drives (which your drive probably is) do not allow for files above 4 gigs.

Do you mean C3PO’s tractor beam line? If you switch the the Mono track, I believe it is there, just as in theaters (mono version but not stereo). edit: oops, you know that. As Catbus says, use the 85 mix.

Prequels - Valeyard is working on what should be a very good TPM. Little changed in RoTS, but Schorman should have a theatrical-accurate version up soonish.

As for AoTC, we can’t do a perfect theatrical version as far as the 35mm film is concerned. We lack the near-end shot of the still robotic hand and the speeder that was deleted to make a flying lightsaber more clear. The DCP version is closer to possible. The hand shot is the same as the DVD/Blu-ray. If we want to assume that the speeder was too (which would be a big assumption - we have no idea), then it could be done. Would just need to use the theatrical audio (which we have) to remove ‘to be angry is to be human’ and change ‘uh huh’ back to ‘yes’. For the ‘to be angry’ deletion to be frame accurate, we would need a few frames of video that were deleted when inserting Natalie’s line, so the change would only be approximate, otherwise.

MINOR SPOILER FOR TFA

After seeing TFA for a second time, I noticed something subtle that may or may not merit making a redaction to the upcoming V4 release of Labyrinth of Evil.
When Rey responds to the beckoning of Anakin’s lightsaber, you can hear children screaming and protesting. It’s an appropriately striking allusion to Vader’s massacre of the young Jedi in the Temple. In light of this, perhaps it would be worthwhile to reinstate this short scene for my edit. I do like the removal of the younglings, and think it was done rather cleanly, but I do want these to be complimentary to what Star Wars goes on to in the sequel films. I’m of two minds on this question, so I’m throwing it out there for now and will consider it before deciding.
If I decide to, perhaps I could reorder the scene so that we cut from Yoda evading Order 66 to Anakin entering the room with the kids, then to the troopers fighting in the Temple with the children screaming from TFA overlaid.

I’m in favor of reinstating the scene. But will that be the only youngling appearance in your trilogy? Seems a bit odd to only show them once and then kill them.

We’ve mentioned the scans at the Library of Congress before, from a few years ago,
only Return of the Jedi is in decent shape, the other two are faded:

Right. Which is interesting, because the person who recently reviewed the copy of SW77 described nothing like the red fade described in those links. He made it sound like perhaps there was a loss of vibrancy, but never mentioned anything being red or pink, let alone unwatchably so. So perhaps this is not the same copy?

Tsmuxergui is what we generally use around here. The ps3 is indeed much better, but it only works with fat32 drives, which is problematic for files this big.

I would generally recommend not extracting or remuxing directly to a USB drive if it is giving you trouble just make the file on a local drive and copy them over when you confirm that they are correct.

Does your mkv app you’re using reencode? I think the best option may be to remux to m2ts and stream to ps3. Though my ps3 is hacked to do NTFS so I need to be careful about making suggestions that will actually work for other users.

Despecialized vs my memory

I also was shocked to see Vader’s ship straighten out, because I remember us all assuming that Vader had died (the first three viewings were all with the same crowd). With his ship straightening out, it is obvious that he survived, and I doubt that all of us would miss that.

I know that I watched the film many times without committing that detail to memory as well. Not sure why, as they would have definitely been 1980s tapes that I was watching. Perhaps I was assuming there should have been more closure as a standalone film (even after knowing the sequels). But I assumed it was one of Lucas’s tweaks when I saw the 1997 version in theaters.
