Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)
Time

Harmy said:

Once it’s done and checked, I’d like to make an official announcement that v2.7 is out - giving you all the due credit, of course - and put it up on tehp. It would be good to put together a short text description and a browseable gallery of the changes for that - obviously not all the color changes, just a few best examples, but all the 35mm shots and stuff.

Thanks Harmy! I really appreciate that.

I’ll put a short text description, and maybe more of an nfo, together this time. Previously, it was more of a ramble put together to make the project goal perfectly clear in a way that didn’t step on your toes (in the eyes of your fans, as I already ran things by you).

I’ve made the post-credits ‘thank you’ segment as well, including the names you mentioned as well as a few others at the end.

For color related gallery images, we can consider those which people like the most. Some things have changed for 2.7, though. Green has been taken out of many of the Death Star walls (don’t worry, they’re blue) and also from some desert shots. So we can see what everyone thinks is good and representative for a gallery once everyone has had a chance to take a look.

I’ve gone back to the blu-ray for some scenes, including the cockpit shots after fleeing Tatooine. It seemed necessary for getting the most out of the BD, as the 2004 master was really botched in these scenes compared to 35mm scans. Just devoid of color, so more difficult to work with something that has already been adjusted.

We can also use the gallery to show off the subtitles that Catbus made. 😃

Wow, that looks really great.

For the faded Eastman prints, can you apply those settings to the entire reel and get as good of results?

That’s another question that needs answering.

Can you do similar tests on the (amazing vanishing) ESB Grindhouse release? Or is there not enough recoverable color information?

Any progress?

Yes!

Watching the second half of the film today. But it should be 100% complete, I think.

I did end up using Catbus’s great new subtitles based on the 35mm (newer and better version than in this thread). I’ve also cleaned up and color corrected TN1’s “A Long Time Ago” card for the intro, for those who are unaware. The final MKV should be done and muxed in the next few days. And then anyone here who wants that can have it. Once a number of people have reported that all is okay it can go on spleen.

It will be version 2.7 and final as far as my involvement with Despecialized editing goes.

MySpleen has been taking down film transfers anyway citing that they were told they weren’t allowed on there anymore. “darkone3437 (It’s film. I was told this isn’t allowed anymore.)”

Nope nope nope.

Myspleen has made it 100% clear multiple times that Star Wars is 100% okay to upload and is the exception to any rules about scans, workprints, etc. darkone was possibly mistaken, or someone told him the wrong thing. Or, as was the case when he tried to upload Mike Verta’s color samples, he got yelled at for sharing stuff he wasn’t supposed to.

Hell, myspleen didn’t even take down the Matrix scans as far as I know.

Shot by shot, as Dr Dre begins his first pass on the film, I am wrapping up my first pass. Actually I’m down to the last ten minutes of non-credits shots, and I’m very happy with the last three reels. I’ll have to give the first three reels another look since my process has evolved quite a bit, but it’s nearing the end of a long road. 😃

Wow, that’s really exciting.

While the primary goal of this now seems to be a source for Harmy’s 3.0, are there plans to release the full 2011 version recolored?

Since he is “not part of the team” presumably he has no say in taking something down, especially when it wasn’t his upload.

Would it be appropriate for me to go around asking that Team Blu’s (for example, only because it’s another team) torrents be taken down because ‘we think that’s a good idea’? Would myspleen verify that I had any authority whatsoever to do that to an upload that isn’t mine?

Would it be appropriate for me to go on Negative1’s discogs page and ask that they start removing vinyl releases from his collection?

The Blu-ray is modified for the text on screen when it says

Add info:

Subjecte…

(deletes the word Subjecte before “SEN”).

I think I re-made this using the other text of the word “Subjecte” for my release, and re-timed it. So one could do that, or use my version. Though I can’t seem to find the raw file, so it’s a 720p encode that exists now.

As for the 16mm transfer, it does have color. Just a matter of how much can be recovered. Someone suggested that it varies throughout.

Also, the blu-ray has altered text color for some of the on-screen display stuff. But that can be adjusted of course.

So what are you saying the source is on that one? The recent digital release?

I took it from Star Wars’ original Facebook. Don’t know where they took the frame from.

Ah okay, then. Best not to read much into promotional materials. They can do anything they want with the color timing if it’s not how it’s going to look in a release of the film.

Guys please can we stop feeding the troll? He’s just going to keep antagonizing anyone who says anything remotely negative to or about him so let’s just ignore him. I’m sick of coming to this thread hoping for updates and just finding more bs from him.

If it gets him banned it’s worth it.

Amen. This isn’t the clever type that figures out how to sneak back in. This is one and done.

Perhaps an ex-team member (TN1, not Team Ollie) is going to finally post v3, AKA Sanitized. It was ready to go over 3 months ago. Of course, they could have labelled the existing ESB verions as “deprecated” or something, instead of deleting them. But I can see not leaving them as-is – they’re a mess. Grindhouse, Deconstructed, Previews, Private Screening, etc. Plus Harmy’s tweaked v2, even though I never saw a v2 posted in this thread.

Except that’s not what happened. If you’ll look a little earlier in the log of deletes:

“Torrent 20427 (Star Wars Technicolor and Empire Strikes Back Sanitized 35mm Previews 2016 - Team Negative1) was edited by IcyFlamez”

The subsequent round of deletes was a temper tantrum in response to this one, which happened following the Verta controversy (the head admin deleted it, on that occasion).

You can crop it to another aspect ratio in VLC I believe.

Ive never heard of VLC before. What are the benefits of using that media player? Again, bare with me, Im still learning when it comes to manipulating digital video media. I dont know quite how to ask this question, but what exactly happens if I crop or squeeze the TN1 movie into a scope format? Will I indeed get the desired result or be wasting my time?

VLC has very high compatibility compared to many media players. It does allow you to crop however many pixels you want off of any edge (not sure if that answers your original request or not).
