Why would the ramp be down at all, though? Seems like someone would have been on it recently for whatever reason.

I like it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with simply grading the film(s) to look decent rather than striving for perfection or matching certain references. You’ve gotten rid of a lot of that awful magenta. Though I think it’s still a bit too dark. Not sure if you’ve done anything with the luma/contrast. It matches the other two OT BD films in that sense (still a bit dark, not necessarily accurate, but not the hideous blue thing that ANH is).
When you say 97SE, do you mean you’re actually striving to replace Jabba with the old model and lengthen the Greedo shooting sequence again, as well as the many other little changes? Or just the color timing?

I don’t know, I got it long time ago from PirateBay.
Huh. It might be the 2004 HDTV one. Puppet Yoda is probably enough for most people to think it’s the theatrical. I think Adywan’s was only 480p, and Valeyard’s isn’t out yet. But I guess there could be ‘another’.
I hope 2.8 fixes the collars.
The original collar stays have been reinserted.
2.9 is going to have popped collars.
I think I can put the AVCHD on a file hosting site by then.
It was a change from the trailer, not the finished film.
Yep. Fortunately many redditors have pointed this out and the OP has said “oops, shouldn’t have posted this” after ranting about it in a number of posts first. Now we’ll get to see it pop back up every few months in an “OMG you Lucas h8ers are hippocrites!!!”.
Both of those changes were mindbogglingly stupid. Absolutely the stuff of hoaxes.
I just rolled my eyes, because it’s not like the BluRays were ever going to be something I would ever actually watch.I can suffer the BD versions of ANH and ESB on occasion if I’m really bored, but I seriously can’t watch the BD version of ROTJ, it’s a nightmare.
I watched the BD of ESB the other day (kind of, I had it on while I listened to the commentary track I’ve never bothered with before, and occasionally watched). It’s not really anything I’d be opposed to if they weren’t suppressing the original, and were instead including it as a bonus disc of the Enhanced 20th Anniversary Special Edition. Though the shuttle part was silly, and I got the reminder of how awful a job they did on Ian’s RoTS makeup.
R2 rocks aside, I would say ANH has had reasonable changes (if one accepts changes) since 1997. But it’s still unwatchable if you don’t like dated CGI creatures, which ESB was free of. Even if you do like that stuff, the ANH color really looks awful. Much worse than the other two films.
I just think it’s hilarious that in the very next scene of the '11 version, the digital rocks magically disappear.
Yeah. If George was still in charge, maybe he’d add some tumbling rock sound effects during one of Ben’s shots in the 2017 edition.
This is the one I bring up whenever someone tries to make the “George’s vision” argument. His true original vision was . . . a couple of extra rocks? More than anything else (besides maybe the door to Jabba’s Palace), I think this is the best illustration of how George was just changing stuff for the sake of changing it towards the end.
I’m still pretty sure any '11 additions were for the 3D release. Foreground rocks, deeper Jabba door matte, more poke-out-of-the-screen bits when R2 gets shot.
That’s actually a pretty good point. Hadn’t thought of it before. But it’s the only explanation I’ve heard of that makes sense for the rocks and door. Maybe even the Ewok blinking. Anything they had the actual 3D model files on hand for (presumably not the 97 fx as they rendered 2004 Jabba on top of 1997 Jabba’s model) could be rendered in stereo. The dug coming down the stairs fits as well, and the extra reflection and sparks added to ESB, though modest changes, could have been done with 3D viewing in mind.
Changing the ANH pod door to black was probably done because it was accidentally made neon blue in their weird attempt to make R2’s blue color ‘pop’ in many shots in that film.
I’m not discussing the PT, I’m saying being pretentious is not indicative of intelligence.
Ah. Teaching by demonstration.
Everyone picking more than one thing is missing the point of the thread.
Well, listing all of your least favorite changes is probably an extremely novel idea for a thread on this site too. Don’t think I’ve seen that before.
He doesn’t look nearly as different between '04 ESB and ROTJ as he does between ROTS and ROTJ.
'04 ESB literally uses the same makeup as ROTS, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at there.
Wasn’t it even recorded on set during the filming of ROTS?
Similar things that are now said about 3D are very similar to things that used to be said when sound was introduced to film. And when color was introduced.
And the several other times when 3D was introduced to film unsuccessfully 😄
Sound and color don’t bother, nauseate, or distract a large portion of movie-goers. Whether or not 3D in its current form is here to stay to some degree, it’s not going to be ubiquitous or the default movie experience. Color and sound probably took some getting used to and accepting, but anyone who has issues with 3D at this point is probably not just unaccustomed. It’s been around for a bit now.
Invite only has it’s advantages and disadvantages. We’ve had people pop up out of the blue with useful resources. I don’t think would happen if they didn’t come across a thread before joining up.
The next forum update ought to make sniffing out the socks much faster. And nobody likes it when Jay calls their parents. 😉
What about a delayed registration approval? It wouldn’t stop the most die hard trolls from eventually coming back. But you should be able to see if they’re stockpiling registrations, or otherwise they’ll need to wait a while and they might be over whatever manic episode they’re in the middle of (not making light of psychological issues, but: some of these kids have some).
When I say I think it should be invite only, I don’t mean it should be hard to get into or have limited numbers of invites or anything. But it would slow down some of the trolls and all but probably one would lose interest. Plus I don’t think there’s a need to make the forum hidden with that model. So it wouldn’t deter anyone from registering in that sense, though some few people will lose interest before the approval. It’s not to keep the trolls out entirely, as that’s not possible. But it makes trolls like the kid today unable to burn through five accounts in a row.
The new software sounds interesting, though. I’m not sure what’s currently in place.
That impression might be due to my posts. What I’ve said is that our standard dts-hd ma tracks we use here don’t play well with the software needed (or several other commercial software packages). I’m sure there’s a fix even if that means encoding it differently somehow, I just don’t know what it is.
1080p at 6 gigs to improve a few seconds of audio? I agree that the first few notes of the main theme feel a bit flat. It just seems a bit counter-intuitive to dramatically reduce the quality of both the audio and video for the rest of the 2+ hours to improve the quality of the audio for a few seconds.
Since you’re looking for help, I’m guessing you might not have the ability to rip the BD yourself. But if by chance you do, a much better option might be for the generous person to just send you the replacement audio track so that you can remux it. It would save them from having to render the film’s video as well.
So until we find out what he has, if anything, might as well keep improving our skills by working on a remaster.
Well we’ve already seen a list of at least some of the scans he has done, so I don’t think the “if anything” is really valid. But you’re correct that you’re proceeding how you best can, given that you don’t have those scans or know when it would be possible.
I’m not out of town now. nor waiting for SSE 1.5. If it was 2.0 they were releasing, with poita’s scan, then that would be something I’d wait for. But that’s a long way off.
It’s especially funny in the case of TFA, because it’s probably not true. But one or two people are convinced otherwise. It’s just the nature of watching films for the sake of finding problems in them. You’re bound to invent some.
Yeah, that post was before 9.2.
Something tells me even an official release of the OUT will not satiate us. I’m betting there will be something wrong with it, should it ever be released.
It’ll never be perfect in the eyes of this community. But if they manage to put out a solid effort, I’ll probably avoid this site and the inevitable hunt for problems. Makes sense that people will want to further improve it (it would be the ideal platform to do so), but if it’s not plagued with issues or modernized color timing or something, I’ll just want to enjoy watching Star Wars for once again, instead of watching and paying attention to every little seam.
Yeah. I know I’ve been saying ‘soon’ for a while. But I think I’ve managed to get the comparison shots completed so it should actually be quite soon.
just curious what the state of this is. i am fine to wait, but i also wanted to bring this thread back from the last 2 pages of offtopickiness
Comparison shots have been sent to Harmy. At some point I think he plans to post an announcement on his facebook page and tehparadox.
I imagine Poita’s work will probably be better than that.
Definitely. Though that’s probably on even more of a floating timeline than your 3.0.
maybe some 35mm fan-preservations may come out, which will make Despecialized unnecessary.
Eh, depends on how the preservation turns out as far as replacing Despecialized. I would definitely settle for the entire OT at the quality of your RoTJ blurry-shot-replacement scenes, though. 😉
What do you think you’ll do with this project after you go 1080p, other than some tweaking?
Hopefully he’ll get to retire!
