THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress)
Time

So yes, if anyone could give me a timecode list from the render so I can start collating a scene priority list, that would be great.

That’s something I can definitely do. I’ve already gone through the film before, to replace the BD shots with Laserdisc upscales based on your 16mm scan.

I know about your time crunch as well. Is the priority going to be:

THX ‘prespecialized’ -> OT ‘prespecialized’ -> THX -> OT?

or

THX ‘prespecialized’ -> THX -> OT ‘prespecialized’ -> OT?

Either way, anything you can come up with in your time frame is essentially priceless to us all.

Will the version you upload be 4K, or 1080?

I am not ‘delivering’ it as such in any format, the restoration will be done at 4K Academy resolution for archival purposes, it will probably clock in at around 16TB or so in size for the final work, per movie. From that any other format could be derived I guess.

I do not think he is going to answer your question as it is stated.

I was only asking for clarification. 4K for archival, but I was enquiring if that was also what will be shared.

I just mean that I do not think he wants to talk about that side of things, in case his previous message wasn’t direct enough.

Honorable mention section has been a thing since Harmy asked for donations so he could afford a computer to do this work on, and that was before Empire v2.0. It really should be on all DeEd releases since that point.

Gotcha. Well, wasn’t aware of that. And this was done on his computer before that, my computer, and several other computers. 😃

So is this being fixed then?

No. If I had known at the time I would have included them to be polite, as anyone who helps Harmy out helps us all out.

However, I won’t be changing it since it is already done, widely distributed, and technically correct. The credits match the credits of DeSE 2.5, along with a few extra names added for people who contributed to 2.7. Therefore, it should cover everyone who contributed something or other to SW 2.5 and 2.7, but not necessarily ESB 2.0 or Jedi 2.5. Sorry if that was not clear. You are probably aware, but SW 2.5 was released before ESB 2.0. Therefore, it doesn’t need to be “fixed” as it’s not broken, but I still would have happily done it earlier.

Dvdactive.com is a stingy bitch with its images.

But anyway, running the pic’s URL through Google Image Search turns up the new Mos Eisley approach with great big CG ronto ass in the left corner.

(Hopefully this copy will stay in place and not wander off).

This is also a shot of the birth of the SE, in a way. The very first (and possibly one of the only/few) change planned was to fix that speeder shot from the vaseline smear version it was before. Not such a terrible idea in itself.

After that, obviously many terrible decisions were made.

It was a change from the trailer, not the finished film.

Yep. Fortunately many redditors have pointed this out and the OP has said “oops, shouldn’t have posted this” after ranting about it in a number of posts first. Now we’ll get to see it pop back up every few months in an “OMG you Lucas h8ers are hippocrites!!!”.

Still, I’m intrigued as to why they were changed.

In one of the interviews on the making of the film, someone (JJ?) described this as one of the most time consuming effects shots in the film. It’s quite possible that they worked on tweaking it more after the trailer. Whether the previous flags were placeholder easter eggs, or there was a new decision, whether due to PT content or aesthetic is a mystery for now.

I think the same interview described the final shot of the Falcon landed on Luke Island as another surprisingly tricky shot, due to how many sources they needed to combine. Kinda reminded me of the various sources that make up the Falcon docked in the Death Star hangar in SW.

Are there any screenshot comparisons between the GOUT and 35mm? Just curious to see the upgrade.

Only in the shots that are 100% GOUT (because the 2.5 shot resembles that, though it’s obviously further processed). Admittedly, it’s a bit hard to tell the difference in some for a single scaled down screenshot, but it’s more noticeable in motion. Darth Lucas’s saber element upgrade from GOUT is immediately clear even with the screenshot.

Just finished downloading 2.7, but I’ve noticed that the Honorable Mention section of the Despecialized credits seem to be missing at the end. Was there a reason for this?

This seems to be some sort of accidental error, as the run time is still long enough to include the Hon. Mentions. The video just seems to skip over it on VLC.

Do you mean the specific part of the post-credits? I basically mimicked 2.5 with a few new names. I think the honorable mentions separated out people based on contributions for later releases like Jedi. It wasn’t really my place to sort Harmy’s names he listed in SW 2.5.

If people mean the whole section of Thanks: it’s there. In all DeED versions it has had trouble playing if you skip/fast forward within it, I think due to the fact that the soundtracks have finished playing by this point.

Seriously, I hate them just as much as you do. I don’t care if someone wants to call the PT the best thing ever, but I take issue when they start attacking the OT or members for preferring the OT, or intentionally making vicious remarks to rile people up.

Makes sense to me. The prevalent TFA (a movie I quite like) bashing has me re-thinking my approach to discussing the PT with folks who like it. In both cases there are legitimate criticisms muddled together with people who take immense pride in telling someone why something they like is shit. It makes sense that PT fans have become so defensive.

Ady: definitely take some time off. Stress is a killer. You don’t owe anyone anything. So take as much time as you need to finish your projects. No one here will mind.

I’m glad there’s a sane moderator in all this, thank you. I mean that, I’m not being snarky.

I mostly stayed out of the controversy with you yesterday. You started out kind of reasonable. Other people were sort of dicks, yes, but you kind of managed to top them all and subjected yourself to the same kind of uncritical thinking you were condemning. But I know how these things escalate and I’ve done the same, hence my staying out.

The thing is I very rarely actually defend the PT, or the SE. On the contrary I regularly agree with a lot of the negativity surrounding them to some extent, but the fact that you cannot say anything positive about them without having five people reign down on you about how “wrong” you are and refusing any sort of actual debate just gets tiring and frustrating after a while.

I have some positive things to say about both as well. I would have more for the SE if the OOT were not suppressed from release. I don’t generally discuss those things here. Part of that is just about knowing a community and what topics can result in valuable discussion vs. not. You might not get valuable discussion about the SE here if you defend aspects. You will more likely get an argument (same as PT/SE critique on other sites). So, expect that unless your goal is just to go down fighting. The site isn’t perfect or unbiased, but it’s quite functional for its actual goals.

I know I’ve been unreasonable and probably should have thought longer before posting some of my remarks (which is usually why I end up editing them).
I wouldn’t care about Frinks remarks if it wasn’t so hypocritical.
You cannot sit there insulting people and then cry when someone insults you. It’s immature and while yeah, insulting someone is never good regardless, how can you expect to be taken seriously when it’s “one rule for me, another for you”?

If you’ve been lurking since 2010, you might have noticed that there are a few topics that will rile him up. But there’s one specific word that is the doomsday button. You either missed that topic or pressed the button.

…well, I hope you’re happy guys - your short fuses and outright hatefulness has ruined everything. Maybe that other guy was right, YOU ruined it all for us. Well, thanks for nothing I say!

I’m not 100% sure if this is directed at me or not, but if it is, that’s ridiculous.

Maybe stop deflecting the blame and own up to the fact that this site is slowly turning into an elitist hive-mind.

This is a place where people come because, generally, they share some opinions that are fairly niche these days in mainstream fandom (and becoming more so by the year). It is not surprising that they have similar, yet not identical, opinions. You have made some valid points in your arguments, and you have made some seemingly stressed out emotional and unreasonable ones (and I have done similarly when stressed with some of the members here). But it would be easier to take your comments seriously if you stopped abusing the phrase “hive mind” when you mean approximately “consensus” in this community. You’re treating people’s opinions as if they are not their own. You can expect people to be upset by that. New-PT-forum jokes aside, there are many major SW sites and forums to discuss the SE and PT favorably. Being critical of them, in many communities, is going out of style rapidly.

I made an error and broke a rule and owned up to it, but almost every other link I click on I see you bashing someone or making fun of them for not sharing your opinion on art. You don’t even bother discussing it with them, you just jump straight to making fun of them. Who does that?
Why is that fine, but all these “newbies” are scum for doing it?

The fact that you immediately jump to the conclusion of it being about you “ridiculous” says it all.

Frink teases fairly relentlessly. I used to share your view, somewhat, but his jokes are generally playful. I agree that it’s very easy for newbs to get the wrong idea and see it as hostile. He lays it on a bit too much, too often. And I agree that he often does it in lieu of saying anything meaningful. But there’s an obvious difference between him and the people spouting homophobic, misogynistic, racist nonsense.

As far as the more moderate “trolls” go, there are people who (unlike you) do not simply have different views on the PT. They are here as crusaders to argue for the PT/SE in any thread they can find. They were probably linked here from theforce.net or somewhere and are fighting for George’s honor. They know what’s coming to them, and that’s fine. It would be the same if I joined theforce.net and spammed every thread about how the OOT is supreme and the rest is trash. I would expect a harsh reaction and perhaps eventual banning if it became clear that I was there only to post such crap in the wrong places.

It is with regret that i am leaving this site. I have enjoyed many years here but, with all the crap happening here lately with certain members and newbies trolling, thinking its ok to call people “retarded” ( amongst other things), it is no longer a fun place for me to be. I need to either leave or just take a VERY long break ( i suspect that it will be the former after my latest outburst to certain idiots on this site to which i apologise to Jay and the mods, but i had just had enough of those idiots).

With ESB:R being very close to completion i will either come back to let everyone know that it is complete and ready to go or make sure that you are all informed.

Thank you to everyone that has supported me and my projects over the years

-Adywan

It will be sad to lose you.

However, I have definitely been thinking the same thing, lately. Though it’s not related to the specific incident you describe, TFA brought in a huge influx of trolls and bigots. The latter have been especially loud in recent times, as they feel that they are standing up for themselves as the ‘anti-PC’, when 2+ years ago we would have just called them regular assholes (most of us still do). I still really like talking about the technical stuff with everyone here, but there’s no doubt that it’s becoming an increasingly unpleasant place. If I don’t leave, or at least take a break, I’ll probably see myself banned for a response of mine.

Discussion: Batsh*t crazy ebay listings

Mark’s Down On Your Syntax said:

This seller could have slightly overestimated the value of their goods, they could be a ebaying genius, or they could just be a delusional clown. After you’ve stopped laughing at the price read the item description (and pay attention to their preferred payment method!)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182105300701

The listing ends in 10 hours, hurry before you miss out!

Perhaps they misunderstood the “gold” part and are trying to sell it as if it was made of gold.

It’s strange that they have good feedback, and otherwise very normal items for sale.

Help: looking for... E.T. 20th Anniversary Edition in HD? (with info)

Since JP seems to be away for now, if anyone else who is familiar with the film would like to take a look, send me a PM. If you’re familiar with the SE changes, that’s great! If not, you can see if I missed anything here: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=5229907 but that’s what I used as a guide, and it’s missing at least one thing.

If there are no errors, it should be the final video stream, but still needs to be muxed to a DTS track (it has lossy English audio included). Many of the SE shots look quite good. There’s a few that aren’t as impressive, but overall I think it looks decent.

I think there could’ve definitely been a great ‘coming to life’ sequence if the falcon was found in another circumstance. Powering everything up, seeing a dust covered console, etc.

In the action of how it plays out, it’s harder to picture, but I don’t know the shot by shot sequence off the top of my head to picture whether it could work. But yeah, it could be neat to see the lights turn on from one end of a corridor to another, along with sound effects.
