I just finished downloading the 2.5 version for ROTJ via tehparadox, but I find it odd that the Opening Crawl reads EPISODE VI. Is it the correct version?

Thank you very much, Harmy! Your work is incredible and I’m a huge fan. I’ve spread the word as much as I could here in Brasil.

Yes. Only Star Wars ever had a numberless version. When ESB came out, it was V, and they switched SW to IV.

Thank you very much. So, back in 1980, the crawl to ESB read Episode V already?

Yes. And then in 1981, they made the first of many changes to Star Wars by renaming it A New Hope.

Thanks mum!

NP, illegitimate child. 😃

I wasn’t speaking for him, but just offering my perspective. As someone who has dealt with sharing early previews of color gradings for feedback, and as someone who has chatted with Neverar about his work.

Not sure if he will want to do any previews or feedback gathering at all. But even if he does, best to have everything at the same stage of completion. Especially if it’s so close already!

Aaaarrgggghhhh. This is infuriating. It appears to have happened since I updated Final Cut Pro X. The only order the damn thing will export the surround sound in is L C R Ls Rs LFE.

As Mal said, you should be able to just swap the tracks in Audacity or similar.

Ok about the slow down speed, I was wondering why because most of the wipes don’t have this slower motion. So I guess it’s fine !

It can be tough when you want to use a wipe in a shot that wasn’t rendered or filmed for one! The amount of time between the end of the action and when they cut the shot can be too short to work with. So, sometimes you need to slow down or loop something if you want to build a wipe.

In Premeire (and probably other packages), you can make it look a little better by turning on Frameblending for the slowdown (interpolation).

Thanks so much for the update! Would there be any possibility of an interim release once the preliminary grade is 100%?

It’s so close, I think it might be best to just let him get it finished. As we all know, showing previews of color grades here leads to a never ending circle of feedback, suggestions, and so on. People won’t always know what’s final and what’s preliminary, especially if they have their own personal tastes that differ from what Never is doing.

this is on ebay right now not at a high price

I sent a message to the auctioneer asking him to request of the winner to create an account on this website and inform the community of his newly acquired print. I just got the reply back saying that he’ll gladly pass on the information.

Just a thought, but it might be a good idea to ask the community (or just Poita or Silverwook) before making a rather bold move like that.

Those versions, whether or not they end up being final, are probably years off. He’s working on Empire 2.5 now.

I certainly wouldn’t put off watching Despecialized until 3.0 comes out. I would maybe consider holding off on burning Empire until 2.5 comes out, but if you just want to watch the films right now, there’s no reason to wait.

Ahh okay. Is empire the furthest one along? I thought all three were at 2.5? What stage or version are they all at if you don’t mind me asking?

No, it’s the least. It’s currently at 2.0. Jedi is at 2.5. I worked with Harmy to make some updates to SW, so it is at 2.7 now.

Oh didn’t know that. Then thank you very much for all the work you do! Figure I should probably download the newest versions then. I assume it’s all just on myspleen? My old account should hopefully work, even though it’s two years old…

2.7 is probably >99.5% Harmy’s work. 😃

As for your account, it might be inactivated. If so, ask about it on the myspleen forums and they’ll deal with it, instead of trying to get a second account.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in order to obtain the preservation effort ‘Despecialized’ versions, you have to own the official releases. Otherwise the entire project could be jeopardized. Grab the official Blu rays and then I am sure an invite will not be a problem. Cheers.

While I agree, as doing this is kind of a win-win for everybody, I’d like to play devil’s advocate for a moment. If people continue to buy the official blu-ray, wouldn’t that essentially tell Disney “this version is fine, no need to release the unaltered trilogy because we will just continue to buy anything you release, regardless”? While making sure to own the official releases before downloading the fan edits is the morally correct thing to do, the whole “vote with your wallet” concept kind of goes out the window by doing that. Just a thought…

I think we’re pretty vocal and have made ourselves clear with petitions in the past. At the same time, we’re probably a small minority of the fans compared to the bulk of people who likely just buy, watch, and enjoy the blu-rays. It’d be a drop in the bucket if we protested buying them (it has been suggested here before), and they would never even notice.

Even if our numbers were substantial enough, you’re right that voting with your wallet is a perfectly valid tactic. But the correct version of that route means voting with your wallet by not buying, downloading, or watching Star Wars unless you’re getting the 2006 bonus DVD or something. Not buying anything official but watching Despecialized anyway (which is made from the blu-rays, of course) is protesting the idea of paying for movies. Plenty of people do that (piracy), and I don’t think the movie industry is lending an ear to their cause. 😄

I have the 2.7 19.9 gb. Would I be able to burn it into a format that a blu ray player would be able to read?

Yes, you can easily get this into a format that will burn nicely to a Blu-ray recordable disc, though if you intend to play it on that PS4 you mentioned, I remember hearing that it refuses to play any Blu-ray recordable discs… So that’s another hurdle if it’s your only Blu-ray disc player…

Nope, that’s Xbox One!

Long time fan of this site and finally got a home theater. I can’t pull the trigger buying the official blurays (the Vader “noo” was the last straw). Would love to get a hold of these blurays but don’t have a myspleen account. Anyone willing to PM me an invite?

Indeed, as one69chev said, we support the official releases because our goal here is certainly not to divert funds from Disney’s blu-ray sales. They’ve been surprisingly non-combative with this scene, and that’s how we would like things to stay. For 99% of us, that means that the blu-rays just sit there on a shelf, unused (or are ripped to our PCs in order to edit into something proper). But we certainly do not support the notion of downloading a free version of the films instead of paying anything.

Just a question: Do you still need the official Blu-ray/Digital HD release if you want to download the Despecialized DVD-5 or is it okay even if you only have the official DVD?

Also, the 2011 edits are on DVD in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Philippines.

I am just asking this question as a little hole in the rules even if I have the official Blu-ray.

I can’t speak for the site or its admins. I think the important thing is having contributed money in good faith to the people who own the copyright. Doing your best, with something reasonable like you describe, should be just fine. If you’re making an effort, you’re going to be miles better than all the people you’ll see in youtube and facebook comments who proudly proclaim that they’ll never spend a dime on Star Wars.

With something as ‘grey area’ as this, there are inevitably going to be holes and imperfections when you scrutinize the rules. I personally think buying a sealed DVD from an official shop is a better gesture than buying someone’s used blu-ray set on ebay. I would definitely not lose any sleep if I bought the SE DVDs in order to watch a Despecialized DVD5, especially if I don’t own a blu-ray player.

Yep. You’re not going to get invited to myspleen until you prove you’re not a cop by sending Frink a picture of your junk. This should probably be in a myspleen invitation tutorial, and stickied as a top post.

Unfortunately it turns out that Reel2 (at least) of the UK print has mould damage, which isn’t clear until you get it cleaned, and unfortunately there is no way to remove all the mould safely, (it is showing up as red flashes on some frames) so we will need to replace some of those scenes with ones from the DE print.

Is this what happened to TN1’s grindhouse scan as well (perhaps the same print)?

Oh, I’ve been working at 1080p for quite some time now - all the work on ROTJ 2.5 has been done in 1080p.
That being said, v2.5 will still be 720p only because I will be using parts of v2.0 but the newly despecialized shots should all be ready for v3.0.

Ah, okay. I thought part of the issue was the base 2011 content having the first round of color correction rendered out at 720p, and not switching to 1080p until Neverar’s version (or similar). I know that you switched to 1080p for new content as of Jedi.

Nothing’s really decided on that - these scans by Poita are quite new. But I think I will be keeping the colors pretty close to v2.0.

What is definitely decided though is that I’ll now be scrapping months worth of work I did using the grindhouse and will be starting from scratch using Poita’s scans. The progress using those should be a lot faster though, as they’ll require a lot less cleanup and color correction work.

Too bad and all for the best at the same time!

But this repeated work is something that would be done for 3.0 anyway, so best that you didn’t continue on too much longer. Are you still using 720p BD material or are you considering jumping right into 3.0 style work?
