It’s possible that’s what she meant. But it’s also possible that she was simply reassuring people that they were not going beyond what Lucas did with the trilogy. It was a respectful answer, as opposed to something like, “oh god no. it has been changed enough.” Making an ST compatible OT or any other sort of changes that are beyond his control. There’s a world of difference between post-Lucas enhancements and actually releasing something that he himself made and once signed off on. If they do release the OOT, after all, they’re surely going to present even that in a pro-Lucas manner whether he likes it or not (and why shouldn’t they? He did a good job, once).

In any case, I think there’s a limit to how much we can read into an awkward ‘on the spot’ question and answer like this, in terms of using it to establish Disney’s official position on the matter.

That’s a shit article anyway. That’s not the question she was asked. She was basically asked if they were going to make another special edition with more changes. She was not asked if they were going to restore the originals. Article just wanted attention.

Not exactly, the question asked by the interviewer is pretty ambiguous:

“The vision of George’s final cut of the films that he left us with, whether that might be altered over time.”

To which Kennedy says:

“I wouldn’t touch those, are you kidding? :laughs: Those will always remain his.”

To me that reads pretty clearly like another SE or further “enhancements”. Of course, it could technically be twisted a bit to mean reverting to the original films. But her ‘on the spot’ response is much more likely geared towards the more obvious meaning, in my opinion.

Either way, if the interviewer intended to get information about the OOT, it’s unfortunate that he was apparently afraid to ask directly or clearly.

Info Wanted: Highest quality version or reconstruction of 1997 SE of ROTJ?
Time

^ Yep, that’s pretty much the state of things. There is no reconstructed 97SE for Jedi as there are with the other two. And actually, as far as I know, ESB didn’t get the same level of attention as Harmy’s ANH. I believe it is just a color adjusted 2004 version with the Emperor shots replaced with GOUT, and correct audio track.

It’s astounding that a line about a sith Lord being sent by the emperor was never thrown back into any of the Special Editions.

That was my first thought as well. Due to the quality, it’s hard to tell if this is the actual dialogue from the movie (obviously, I don’t mean Vader), but most of the film was redubbed/ADR’ed, so I’m not sure. It’s possible that the line doesn’t exist in good enough form.

It also seems that much of the unused film had not been combed through until Gareth recently started hunting for things, so it’s possible this was under the radar for years?

Well, there was that user on the blu-ray.com forums who claimed Disney is currently in the process of scanning in every last piece of Star Wars related film material.

That may very well have been how those unused takes were brought to Edwards’ attention.

True. Not sure which came first.

Regardless of any immediate plans to release the OOT, I certainly hope they are taking steps to preserve absolutely everything.

Adobe Encore or No?
Time

Has anyone here ever actually had complete success with Encore, from project inception to working blu-ray disc?

Yes. It may not be amazing software, but Adobe did not ship a product that fails to build discs.

Now, the potentially foolish thing on my part was attempting to put an m2ts file on a Standard DVD, which for all I know may be impossible to do, but from what I’ve seen, Encore can down-convert high-def files. In further researching the issue, I came across this forum:

First of all, certainly do switch to blu-ray mode instead of DVD, if that’s what you intend to build. The compatibility with codecs will be different. I.e., if you want to import and use an h264 file, that will be compatible with BD but need to be transcoded for DVD. Secondly, everyone commenting in that link you gave says to demux the m2ts or mkv into individual streams with tsmuxer (this is something I also mentioned). It should work fine.

I’m slightly confused as to what your goal is. You can convert an MKV to m2ts just fine and with zero loss. And you should be able to import that into encore. You should also be able to demux the MKV if you only want some tracks from it. Why are MP4s and iTunes being used?

Not sure what you mean about HD and SD.

With whatever authoring software you end up using, you should be able to output the files for a BD disc, or a disc image. You can mount this on your computer and test it out in blu-ray playback software (there are some free ones, or you could find a demo or something) before burning.

Some things in 1997 were probably Lucas’s original vision. Other things are surely bullshit.

This could be a fun discussion–speculating on the reasons behind each and every change.

Someone here at one point speculated that some of the most pointless 2011 changes might have been done with 3D in mind.

R2’s rocks
Jabba’s door
The Dug thing
(maybe the sparks in ESB?).

Compositing in new items on a different plane makes for easy things that can be forced to ‘pop’ in 3D.

It’s also been pointed out to me that some of the audio changes were done because LFL lost the originals or the original audio had been damaged. Luke’s changed dialogue to R2 in Empire Strikes Back being one of the examples.

Has that been confirmed anywhere? The fact that most of the dialogue changes in the series seem to be lines by 3PO, storm troopers, etc (if I recall correctly) led me to believe that George was simply changing whatever he could in cases where he didn’t need to worry about lip sync. That line of Luke’s in the swamp is one where there’s not the clearest view of Luke’s face.

On a slightly more related note: it’s hard to get an idea of scale from the photos - how large was the hangar model?

9ft L x 6ft W x 3-4ft H. It was made 1/72 scale

Holy Crap! Is this for real?! That Wampa looks sick. I can’t wait to see it in action.

That’s… no. That’s not the Wampa.

Hey grammar police he made an error oh i know let’s attack him.

He didn’t make a grammar error and nobody attacked him. What are you talking about?

This part is what i was talking about. That’s… no.

He was saying that the Wampa pictured is not the wampa Ady built. Again, there was no grammatical error made and nobody attacked anybody.

Nevermind i don’t care anymore i give up. I’m not going to win is how i see it. People are mad at me on here and i can do nothing about it 😦

You win every time you post. The rest of us lose, because there’s nothing we can do to stop it from happening again and again and again.

Sorry, but no. There have been hundreds of changes done between the originals and the 97 SEs.
The 2004 DVD is basically the 97SE with corrected colours

That’s just not true. The only people who ever say that are people who swear by the original cuts and don’t watch the special editions. I saw the faces release first, that was my intro to star wars when I was a kid, then I watched the special edition growing up, and then I had the DVDs when I was a teenager. Those are just what I had available because they didn’t rerelease the originals. The DVD version is completely different because the changes you describe warp the foundation the films. Adding a cgi dewback is just not the same as adding a Hayden Christensen.

Well it’s difficult to say if you’re judging it based on the perceived intensity of the changes, or the raw number. As far as number is concerned, I think the 97 will come in first for the change count (especially for ANH). In 1997, Lucas did say Jedi needed the fewest changes as it was in better shape in his mind. And they’ve changed it quite a bit since then. Still, the tons of little changes in optical effects and such are probably most numerous from original to 97.

It sounds more like you’re discussing severity of the changes, which is a pretty subjective thing. But, indeed, there wasn’t the (fully formed) corrupting influence of the PT in 1997. So for any of us PT critics, the 2004-2011 changes will carry a little more weight in how awful they can be. Some things in 1997 were probably Lucas’s original vision. Other things are surely bullshit. In another sense, the 2004 version could maybe be considered “most changed” since they butchered essentially every frame in color correction. And if light sabers are among your favorite things in the Star Wars universe, the visual effect is utterly trashed starting in 2004 (and not much better in 2011). So, yeah. It’s subjective.

Depsecialized version on HDTV widescreen?
Time

You have to edit your post, links like that are not allowed here and can get you banned.

If parts are down, ask on the place that you found the links posted (I believe it is a forum as well?). I suppose you could have posted the rar numbers for the DVD5 and someone could PM you if they had a better link.

Honestly, the DVD5s are probably very rarely downloaded, so it’s not surprising that the links expired with no one noticing. If you happen to have dual layer DVDs, and a compatible blu-ray player, you can burn an AVCHD disc (essentially a blu-ray on a DVD9). Those links could be up.

Edit: also, the links that you should not have posted seem to work. All the more important that you DELETE them, then.

Yeah, especially given that it was an avi file, it could be absolutely anything. They tend not to be used anymore. And even when they were more in vogue, this scene probably used full DVDs instead anyway. But probably something non-anamorphic and stretched by your TV. The least terrible way to watch it would probably be a “zoom” setting that doesn’t mess with the AR. Not sure what Justified does.

Hopefully they’re just getting the prequel shit out of the way to appease those incorrect fans… then they’ll move on to the panel proper.

I hate the PT almost as much as the next man but there are no objective opinions dude. Stop that shit man.

Indeed. I think it’s very unlikely they’ll announce anything. But if they did, the goal would be to try to unite the fanbase and appease everyone (niche or otherwise) and just try to make it clear that they’re happy to take everyone’s money and not just some of us. Why the hell they wouldn’t want to do so is the only baffling thing.
