If they put out an original version, everybody would buy it. Very few people would reject it simply because it didn't have the Special Edition crap in it. But huge numbers of us WOULD reject it if it was SE. The lack of offering of the OT has never been because it wouldn't sell.

Not sure how huge the numbers would be, but it would be good PR for old fans who are undoubtedly skeptical of the future of the franchise under its new masters at Disney.

My hope is, of course, that Reliance has done a jaw-dropping restoration of the OT in 4K, which we will...get... in...4K...some...how? On some future 4K medium? I dunno. But either way, that ain't happening soon for tons of reasons, so I decided to just press ahead!

Just to clarify, do you think that a potential restoration/release of the OT 'aint happening' any time soon due to these reasons, or just the release in 4K?

I've only just in the last day realized what your project was, and started to read this thread and watch your videos (honestly, I was never sure what the project *was* after quick glances, previously). Really interesting stuff.

Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Released)
Time

I think this was the most improved of your three PT edits. Hayden still can't act, specifically in romance scenes, but the way it's "written" now at least doesn't require Padme to be mentally impaired to fall for him. Anakin now represses his anger over the sand. As he should.

The deleted scenes look as good as they're going to without better sources. Only the long shots of the Windu/Kenobi scene look particularly low res.

The only noticeable/memorable scene deletion (for me) was the Geonosis arrival and assembly line bit. It's a shame that they so poorly made what could have been one of the more entertaining action sequences. Worth removing for the PS2-era graphics of 3PO and R2, if nothing else.

Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)
Time

I must say I enjoyed this one. I found the first half hour much more bearable without the awful R2D2 CGI antics. The parts that actually work in the film can be enjoyed more readily.

Actually, I grabbed the v1, as I wasn't so sure about the Death Star change. Including the Death Star was cheesy and lame, but I figure if there's any point in the trilogy that they should be allowed to get away with that kind of 'fan service', it's in the last few minutes connecting it to the OT.

After reading some reviews, I was kind of concerned that Anakin's visions of Padme's death and subsequent discussions of them would be *completely* left out, leaving no discernible reason for him to give Palpatine the time of day after learning who he is. I'm glad that you simply reduced the presence of this idea. At least this was true for v1. Hopefully for v3, as I've deleted v1 :)

I did end up grabbing the v3, as it appears to have both the Seeds of Rebellion and Loyalists deleted scenes, rather than just one. And there are some minor fixes (intact lightsaber sound when attacking droids/Grevious on the bridge). The Coruscant sequence actually looks very nice.

The 'Padme lives' ending ending was well executed. But I have mixed feelings about the idea. It's a more striking change than most of your trilogy, which seamlessly chops out the worst parts in ways often no different than a TV network editing something for time. Though, obviously you improve it in the process. I did actually kind of like the deception of Padme apparently pregnant at her funeral. And I don't mind altered continuity, it's practically tradition at this point. But by leaving Vader's terrible "Noo", you leave the idea of her perceived death intact.

So, very nice job. Thanks for these, and see you at v4. :P

edit: By the way, all three V3 movies gave me scrambled video as bluray unless I selected "Do not change SEI/VUI data". Didn't check v1.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Just as a heads up, Hal, those who are particularly conservative when it comes to spoilers might object to that second sentence. Sure, it's not specific and there are probably *titles* to spoiler articles that say as much, but it's still passing along vague info from the supposed info leakers. Some people might not be aware of even that.

edit: beat me to it.

age requested video from two of the samples I did, only without the splitscreen bluray comparison.

So here are longer cuts of those:

edit: sorry it seems like at least one of these was encoded with potato quality settings. Should still be able to judge the color, though.

Star Wars ANH Bluray Semi-Despecialized & CC (JASWFP) V1 DONE (Released)
Time

Looks nice. Hopefully no offense taken indeed about the color. A different end goal than Harmy, clearly. The color reminds me of the more saturated "technicolor" version kk650 was working on.

As far as the semi-specialization goes, removing the awful Mos Eisley entrance, Jabba, and all the CGI dewback and scout droids would be ideal (to me, of course).

Good luck

Could you post a comparison of v1 vs v3 with that shot? I really liked the v1 LUT. I think a lot of us (me and kk650, certainly) have probably found ourselves not able to stop tinkering and trying to remove the issues of the bluray to the point of going too far in another direction. Not saying it can't possibly be improved upon, but there are limits to how much it can be improved, and your v1 had great results.

Help: looking for... the 1997 special edition preservations
Time

There are some digital TV (non-HD, but pretty nice) recordings called "G'kar" (German) and "TB" (Scandinavian). To my untrained eye, the G'kar looks very marginally better, but it has a German crawl and alien subtitles (for IV and VI).

I've also heard of a "Reivax" version of IV, but don't know what it is.

The nicest looking version is the Team Blu bluray upscale based on those first two recordings I mentioned. They've got their own thread for it. Only IV is out so far.

This is really great. Thanks for sharing the lut.

I did a couple tests with Jedi (top is with the first LUT applied, bottom is bluray):

These are not messing with the highlights/shadow effect.

Info: Digital Release? Hasbro releasing "digital release commemorative collection" in May

I would be disturbed if it was a digital-only release, especially if it's a new transfer, for two reasons.

1. If it can be downloaded at all, it would most likely have drm on it.

2. Regardless if it has drm or not, it would most likely be highly compressed, as I doubt the general public cares much about video quality and are more concerned with what they might view as a "waste of space", especially if the download is in HD or 4k.

At least if it were the old Lowry transfer there would be no point in downloading them, since you can get it through superior sources ('04 HDTV rips and '11 Blu-ray)

Well, regarding #1 the response is always "not for long".

I think if something were digital only, it would only be that way for a limited amount of time (promotion with Netflix, whatever). They would be making their money back on the new transfer with BluRay sales at some point.

If indeed they are going to release the UOT this year, that would probably be held off until a physical medium release. On the other hand, doing the UOT digitally first as a beta test would allow them to get (too much) feedback about it before committing to a release that we will inevitably find things wrong with. But of course it's silly to assume they'll care about stuff like that.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Mithrandir said:

J J's Paranoia comes from his own mindset, in which he believes that plot-twists and surprise are the most important elements of a cinematic experience.

Faust, Oedipus, The Illiad, Dante's Commedy...most of the major works of art Men have created have quite predictable endings, we can foretell what will happen, but we don't know how will it happen, and the depth of these works is set in that how. The Prequels sucked, not because we knew the story already, but because they were shittily told, in every single way, from script to visuals.

Now, Star Wars redefined the concept of plot-twist with "I am your father"... and it was cool, because it was jaw-dropping but also because it presented the opportunity to make personal for the character a struggle that was mainly political. It was fine for a 3 part movie.

Now there's a virtually unlimited number of movies, and it should be time to realise there's a lot more to tell in any story than deus-ex-machina-kind of stuff. I mean this diegetically, and non diegetically, a film is perfectly enjoyable even if you know everything that will happen.

JJ only believes in Jaw-dropping amusement. Lost proves this, and that is the source of his secrecy. It's funny he is compared with Spielberg some times.

I just watched the 'making of' Jaws documentary on the Bluray, and it sounds like they had a ton of secrecy for that one, too. In that case, it was because they had a big, crappy mechanical fish and knew that seeing it in stills, in the garage, would lead to huge doubts about the film.

I imagine JJ has reasons like this. People will freak out unnecessarily about each and every piece of information they get about the story or how it's being filmed (especially far in advance of it being completed).

Don't get me wrong, JJ is also infamous for relying on surprises. The need for Cumberbatch to keep his mouth shut about his role in ST2 was downright absurd. But so long as his intentions are just to get a bit of extra buzz around the theatrical release time, it's not a huge deal to me. The concern, of course, is if those surprises are required for the film to be enjoyable at all. A movie can't be successful in the long term, for re-watches, etc, if that's the case.

Nevertheless, it's good to know that's a usual problem with VLC.

I accidentally left too long of a quote in my last post. The garbage that shows up at the start happens for every m2ts for me (and whenever you skip ahead in the video). What's going on at the end is another story.

Remuxing to mkv eliminates the problem for me.
