NSP's Empire Strikes Back: Despecialized CC w/ Grindhouse (BD9, BD25) (Released)
Time

I sent you a PM to share my thoughts (indirectly), because I was being lazy.

Sometimes the skin tones look to be too yellow. It’s probably a minority of the time, and I don’t have it open to think of an example. Though some scenes do look better (in my opinion) than Harmy’s, I don’t feel like his has missteps like that, and generally plays it safer. Contrast can be too dark at times. On my monitor, Luke was pretty heavily shadowed as he took off in his Xwing from Dagobah. Detail present in Harmy’s was obscured. But Dagobah in general looked great and natural. I wonder how much was automated, vs. manually adjusted shot by shot?

^I agree, it looks great!
Except maybe that rock (?) on the right. It looks superimposed and the shadows don't seem as dark as the shadows in the rest of the shot.
Maybe it was always like this though?

I think it always looks pretty bad.

Honestly, the least noticeable the rock has been was in Mike's raw scan, pre-cleanup, for the reasons he mentioned. The different elements appear to be (falsely)  more in unison when the dirt, grain, and shake is consistent across them.

I was trying to open the recent re-posting of ESF's covers. I can download them but I can't get them to open.Sorry for my delayed response.

They're png files, which may be why you haven't gotten them to open. What software are you using? If you're on a PC (and probably mac), you can right click the file and try opening with a different program.

That's all I needed to know. Disney ought to make episodes a little easier to watch online. (Weren't TCW episodes put up on the official site?) XD is treated like a premium channel by more than a few cable providers.

Perhaps season 1 will hit Netflix once season 2 begins to air.

On that note, from what I've read recently, the season 2 premiere will be shown at Celebration next month. Do we know if it's just excessively in advance or is it only a short wait until the actual season begins?

Then there's the fully restored version that you sit down on your couch and watch on a normal 1920x1080p HDTV and looks just the way it was intended as Lucas sat there going over preview screenings getting the film ready for release (or as close as possible, given the sources available, uncertainty about exact color timing on certain shots and so on). With space being inky black and these mattes and such not visible at all even in a very dark living room viewing environment, etc. That's certainly the version I look forward to seeing in any Star Wars preservation/restoration project when I actually watch it for real in front of my HDTV with some popcorn and an ice cold Coke. :)

Completely agree. But obviously this discussion is always trickier with SW than any other film because the word "intended" has been abused by Lucas et al. over the decades.

There is something weird about the Temple shot, I don't really know WHAT'S wrong with it, but the original scan looks real, but your restoration looks like a combination of a live plate and a matte painting. Can't really understand WHY but on your restoration it's much more visible that it's a painting.

Could it be the rock and brush along the right hand border? These elements mesh a bit better when the rest is faded. With the deeper blacks and improved color of the restoration, those lighter elements stick out a bit more and have a not entirely convincing sort of perspective to them.

The shot in general looks great, though.

NSP's Empire Strikes Back: Despecialized CC w/ Grindhouse (BD9, BD25) (Released)

I’ve previewed my still incomplete download, and what I’m able to view so far looks nice.

I’m not familiar with the filters and techniques you’re using, but from the initial description, I was expecting to see something like Grindhouse with improved color based on DeSP. The final description and final product suggest DeSP as the base. So what role did Grindhouse end up having in this?

I know, you will just completely take me as offensive ;)

The best explanation for these continuing posts would be that you don't understand that. Yet here you acknowledge it and post anyway.

Maybe start 'Buddahguy's Rude and Obsessive Sandcrawler Perfection Thread' instead of continuing to post in a thread where no one cares.

only the blu ray covers for now, but would like them all . My computer says I have and photo gallery error and the file is not supported. so they are downloaded just not opening.  My comp is older but still runs well. Is it possible to covert these files to a format I can get to open? Or tell me how to fix this problem....?

I think he meant specifically which files are you trying. There are probably hundreds in this thread, in a variety of formats. You need to give some tiny bit of information such as the file, the format, the program you're using to open it. Chances are you've got several programs on your computer that are capable of opening the files.

*Used my own GOUT version when that fat CG creature walks in front of speeder, hopefully I can get my hands on the same source that harmy uses (i.e. not gout), since it's much better http://share.pho.to/8v5P3 (mine vs gout)

You could also use the actual despecialized 2.5 release, even though it's in 720p.

 I agree.

I've messed around trying to make a semi-specialied Mos Eisley entrance a bit. The SE really has little going for it. The speeder looks nice in most shots, but that's about it.

The kangaroo-rat things are unnecessary.

You can cut it after the robot in the next shot, but visual continuity becomes a bit wonky. The following approach has more kangaroo-rats, and irks me because the storm troopers are exact mirrors, making the exact same movements.

Dinosaurs* need to be cut entirely, IMO.

Droid behind stormtrooper needs to go.

Overview shot might be nice with dinosaurs edited out. There is camera movement and it would be quite a task.

The speeder/landscape in the next shot look wonderful. But the dinosaur obviously makes it unusable. This shot has simply never looked good, aside from Mike Verta's version.

*Aware they have species names. It's more appropriately disrespectful to call them dinosaurs, of course.

Here's my attempt at the entry. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1zkfh8_anh-7_creation

Admittedly, a few of the things I complained about are still there. I used mostly Harmy 2.5 to despecialize it. But his first 35mm shot (with the car-speeder-thing, replacing the swinging Jawa) was just something I couldn't get the color timing to work for. I don't know if it was just washed out or tweaked too many times already. Ended up using the 1.0 SD upscale.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

Alright, I'm going to try to see how far off I am from understanding your prints.

Eastman print 1 - very red, source of upcoming 'internal' release and occasional patching

Eastman print 2 - less faded, reels 1-4 used for 2013 ex-DCP

Eastman/Fuji - reels 1-4 Eastman, 5-6 Fuji. So not a complete Fuji here? Used for the Grindhouse release. Reels 5-6 also used for the 2013 ex-DCP release.

Fuji print 2 - Complete Fuji with nice color and minimal fade. Source for the eventual final release.

Anywhere near correct?

-1 Has been holding on us this whole time!  I wish I had the time to make a film.  I'd love to interview you guys behind the scenes.  Is team -1 cool with you using their scans?  The film needs some drama.

If it's the spanish print, Negative1 had a post on this forum about 2 years ago looking to sell it. They say they still have access to it, but not that they have it. So, it sounds like a reasonable fate of the print?

Really enjoying these videos, by the way. Please keep them coming. :)

EDIT: I just tried to get T2 and somehow, my ratio didn't move after DLing it, then, it totally erased my DL when I did a verification -- I think it's a problem on the tracker.

Now I have to get it again, after spending the night getting it lol

That's probably a comment much better suited for the forum on the tracker, but the first part is what's supposed to happen for torrents (on any tracker) where you are given freeleech.

The second part involving some sort of verification sounds much more like an issue with your client.
