Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

It's available in the same format that the other ones were when they were still only at version 1.0. Different formats and bitrate options were something that came later, RoTJ will just be the last to move on past 1.0.

As for the picture quality, aside from the lower bitrate, all three films used the HDTV broadcasts as the main source for 1.0. Blu-ray was used for later releases.

Well I'm sure Disney pays far more attention to fans on TFN than they do to ones on OT.com. Most SW fans just don't pay the O-OT all that much attention as TFN shows.

Which is why I'm always surprised/slightly uncomfortable when someone makes a thread over there about restoration and reconstruction type projects. Mostly nothing good can come of it, though the negative attention will probably also not be harmful.

But Mike has completed his restoration of Star Wars 1977 so let's wait and see how Disney wants to respond to it. I mean at this stage we don't really know if they will say "no" to public screenings or not, I kind of get the impression that could well be possible now that the restoration is ready for DCP and 35mm outputs.

If nothing else, could they use his restored segments for portions that truly are missing from their archives or damaged beyond repair (to whatever degree that this might actually be true)? Would it mesh well with the other material?

I recently watched the 'making of the SE' doc on the Blu-ray bonus disc. They needed the camera negative for the Look Sir, Droids shot. It was interesting that they honestly seemed to have no idea if it was going to be in the warehouse until they found it (in the wrong place).

Personally I don't know why MikeV tried to explain his point of view to them. They do understand it, but they also have their point of view which is that Lucas is the creator and so he should have control of the movies. There's nothing really wrong with that point of view, lots of people love the SE's, the issue is they have access to a reasonably decent quality version whereas fans of the pre-SE trilogy do not. They're not mutually exclusive, no one wants to erase the SE's and tell TFNers they can't ever watch them again.

I can certainly see why some people would like them. Especially if you grew up with them. I can even accept that some of them like Hayden being in RoTJ now. They grew up with the prequels and enjoy the consistency/links, including the consistently cheesy CGI. And I'm really not judging. No matter what version you like, nostalgia will always cover up the imperfections.

But yes, you've said it exactly right. The argument about which version is better can be set aside entirely when it comes to whether or not the originals should be suppressed. Even SE fans could perhaps imagine another film that they love the way it is, and imagine that they are no longer permitted to see it as they remember it. I wonder if any of them cared when only the Walkie Talkie Edition of ET was available.

To be somewhat fair, there are TFN type fans who do think we should be allowed to see the OOT, despite having no personal interest in it. But this is where Lucas's Kool-Aid was really effective. They'll us that Lucas already put the OOT out on DVD in 2006 and "nobody cared". They'll say that the quality was fine, it's just that it turns out that nobody wants to see the "ghetto version" of the film (real quote). And most of all, they'll tell us that there's no way to see the original in HD, because the negatives were destroyed in order to produce the SE. I think that's the single most effective mistruth that Lucas spun on the matter.

Would you want to see Anakin or Obi Wan in the new trilogy, portrayed by their PT actors?

Would anybody like to see that annoyingly missing movie between AOTC and ROTS, where we actually would have seen Ben and Anakin's friendship and seen all the stuff that Alec Guinness aludes to in SW.

I kinda wouldn't mind that. Like is said above, give both actors a fair chance at playing the characters with good dialogue, a good story and good direction.

I think it would be really interesting as far as what could have been. Not sure where it would fit in with the Clone Wars show, which they've kept canon.

Since the last time I've seen anything from Hayden was 10 years ago, I had to look him up to see what he looks like now. Hasn't aged much.

Help: looking for Prequel Theatrical Versions

III would only take a few seconds to make a theatrical edit but I doubt anyone would care. It would be nice if any of the 'scene' cams/telesyncs from its original release were still available on the net, to see if there are any other changes that haven't been noticed.

There was better than a cam or tele-sync for ROTS' theatrical version. A telecine did the rounds and whilst it wasn't quite as good as the final retail DVD, it's still a pretty decent copy for the circumstances and put the other offerings to shame.

I've got it somewhere on an HDD, if you're interested, let me know.

I managed to get it from someone here. Actually, I told them I would upload it to the spleen and haven't gotten around to it.

OK well that was much easier than I thought it would be.  Ordered the Blu-Ray set while downloading it to ease my conscience.  Now on to Parts V and VI ...

Sorry for the noise!

Don't worry. It won't be long before someone else comes along and tells us that it is literally impossible for him to download these without a myspleen invite. Welcome to the conspiracy.

4K restoration on Star Wars

The video came out for the digital releases so that would make sense, but.... grain looks more refined, color is less video looking not as dark. I know this isn't a great reference at all (a stream from the star wars site) but the footage looked/felt different.

Perhaps it's not the exact same grading as the 2004 release. Maybe the video was produced while they were still producing the 2004?

I was basing it mostly on the lightsaber colors and rotoscoping angles.

Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)

I wonder how superresolution can treat motion smearing artifacts. Thinking about it, they'd probably stick out.

I cleaned up the speeder shot a bit, so hopefully that one (the worst artifacts, IMO) will not look quite as terrible, at least.

Did I miss anything? I have read reference about your version, but cannot find the source to it.

It's not available. Just something I was working on for my own use while Dre was uploading his tests here. It could have used another pass, especially in the final 30 minutes of the film. But Dre needed to start encoding and wanted to use it. I hope that it doesn't disappoint, as he has spent forever in render time. I admit I became much more nervous after learning how long it would actually take to encode, as he can't simply whip out a new version... :). The sample posted today uses the cleanup, afaik.

edit: I guess I should say what it is. Just manual dirt, scratch, and dust removal. Nothing automated. Glue removed only when an adjacent frame has aligned picture (i.e., nothing intricately rebuilt). 3 passes on the first 30mins. 2 on the next hour, 1 minimal pass (mostly due to the complexity/speed of the death star run) on the final 30 minutes. Knowing what I know now, it would have been more thorough and much more efficient in regards to time spent on it. Oh well, live and learn. :)

THIS MEANS YOU. SPECIFICALLY.

Technically, this is their own thread. :P And, as Valeyard mentioned in the other thread, it makes sense that they're posting in a thread *about* them (though what they're posting obviously makes no sense). Obviously, there are more clear-cut cases of rule infringement, including posting sensitive information in poita's thread recently (specifically due to multiple people using the account without communicating with one another).

Anyway, I don't spend much time in offtopic. Are there actually rules here?

If people are seeding (and I know there are at least 140 seeders right now - do not ask me how I know), then you can download it easily.  Sadly, myspleen is down right now, so all those seeders are useless.

The public trackers are up. And probably more relevant to bji's post of "not asking for it but is it out there?" as it means he can get it immediately. :)

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

Yeah, when I was color adjusting the blu-ray, I noticed that the saturation in every shot with R2 was horrible (especially in the desert). The shots without him in between are a little less crazy. Super inconsistent. Same with laser blasts on the Tantive. Guess they just wanted certain colors to pop, despite giving all the characters sun burns in the process.
