So who’s idea was it to replace the Sarlacc pit with a Sarlacc creature?

This one was at least apparently in the original concept art. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an awful change and it looks like a circa 1997 video game graphics. The original was one of those cases where technical limitations led to a ‘less is more’ effect, as with Jaws. But, the change does seem to be something originally intended, as opposed to the cases where Lucas is more likely lying.

Why not… do both?

Getting the store shut down (which would probably happen sooner) would possibly cause him to transfer his assets out of the paypal account.

Anyway, in case it isn’t obvious to someone out there: just please don’t try to shut him down by contacting Disney or the MPAA or publicizing his bullshit. I’m sure Disney/MPAA would be the most swift way of ending this, but that’s not the kind of attention/association we want with the things he is unjustly selling.

I emailed them from here: https://www.paypal.com/selfhelp/contact/email/t_s (after logging in). Choose to report fraud/prohibited items.

They didn’t require transaction numbers, but it’s possible that they’ll ignore it unless this is an actual sale. Don’t forget to include ole Seb’s email address: sevsdespec@gmail.com

Sorry about my wrongful quoting tag. Like I said though, I never have like how people use opinions like they are objective scientific facts. Or like there is some scientific objective standard to what makes a movie factually good or not.

You’ll find a pretty wide range of opinions on SW across the internet. As you know, this is a forum that’s pretty biased against the PT and SE (to put it mildly). It’s pretty split on VII, as far as I can tell. Plenty of us are enjoying what we are seeing or just withholding judgement until it comes out. But if this place harbors anything, it’s criticism. I don’t agree with all of it, but there has to be a release valve somewhere on the net. Saying anything remotely critical of Lucas on other popular SW forums will result in no discussion, but a hundred kids yelling at you about George’s Ultimate Vision.

That said, if Disney ever does attempt the OOT, I’ll probably be vacationing from this site for a while so that I can enjoy these damn things as films again for a bit, before learning how every single aspect of them is wrong and apocryphal. 😃

So you going to blame Lawrence Kasdan’s (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) writing for it? George Lucas did not direct this one. Of course he directed Star Wars the original and you seemed to have little problem. I know this forum has a lot of “militant purists” where nothing outside the original unaltered films (With ROTJ not quite accepted either) will probably ever be accepted unless you guys are given approval over everything from the screenplay, filming techniques, etc. Some are so dogmatic they think their opinion is absolute science to what a “good” SW movie is. As if there is absolute scientific standard to what makes a film good or bad. It’s art, it’s subjective opinion. They could let you in on the creative process and approval and give you everything you want, truth told, no MATTER what they do, or whomever else does with a SW movie, there will always be people on forums here or somewhere griping about what was done “wrong”. Never can they make EVERYONE happy.

If you could use a quote or otherwise indicate who you are responding to, that would help me understand what has set you off in this post.

I agree with you that we’re very critical on this site. In some cases, I think it’s very well-founded. In other cases, perhaps a bit over-the-top. Occasionally, totally batshit.

In case it was a response to me, since I was the post immediately above yours: I was making a joke about how robotic and awful some of the dialogue was in the prequels. It got a bit more natural for Episode III, though. I did not actually mean to imply that Kasden would write such wooden characters. Edit: Oh, you’re probably talking to nightstalker. Can’t say I hear what he’s hearing.

I’m just hoping they haven’t turned Luke into a celibate monk, to follow the prequel’s version of the jedi. I hope his actual personality remains intact. I don’t like the idea of him returning as Luke The White, only to act as a completely different character. Yes, he is older, but you always maintain a good chunk of your personality throughout life. I don’t like how soulless and flat the prequels made the jedi. Ben and Yoda both had wonderful personalities in the original films, yet they were concrete slabs in the prequels.

I also don’t want to hear word for word quotes from the originals, that even the prequels used. JJ pulled a lot of that shit in Star Trek. I don’t want to see a fan service, I want to see a good movie. The first 2 Star Wars films were great movies.

Yes. I hope he hasn’t lost the ability to speak using contractions.

I don’t know if this has already been said, but I would be upset if Luke Skywalker turned out to be Kylo Ren. That would ruin his whole arc in the OT.

That magazine article from months ago, it was either Empire or EW or Vanity Fair, had photos of Adam Driver as Kylo Ren without the mask on.

Are we sure about that?

Not only that, the final shot of the new trailer shows the back of Kylo’s unmasked head. That’s Adam’s hair (as seen in the VF photo, etc), not Mark.

I like the very beginning when it’s more like a grumble. When he starts yelling my biggest problem is the pitch is much higher…

I thought so too. Going back, that first grumble (at least, what I think you’re talking about) is present in the English version as well.

I think the main problem with the new noise is that his mannerisms go along a bit more with ‘noo’. I feel that he should be shaking and convulsing a bit with the new Japanese audio, more visibly distraught.

FanEdit.org user CommanderBen sent me another mockup of the Vader scene using the Japanese dub. I figure it’s worth another go-round to assess everyone’s opinion. I could see it working, so please leave a comment if you have any opinion about this one way or the other. It has to be superior to the alternative of leaving the scene alone in order to use.

On the one hand, it’s still kind of stupid and he sounds like he’s gargling mouthwash. But the sound is consistent with the first grumbling he makes (present in this and the English dub).

I would be curious what someone who has never heard either version might think of their relative awfulness.

This may belong in the tech tips section since it's a calibration question, but it relates specifically to the Despecialized Edition, so I figured maybe someone here has experienced the same issue. I've got two TVs that I watch movies on, a Samsung 1080p 50" LED smart tv in the living room and a Samsung 720p 42" plasma in the basement (this is where the bulk of my Star Wars viewing occurs out of courtesy to the family). The DE looks spectacular on the LED display, but on the plasma the seams between the different elements are super obvious and distracting. Does the plasma just produce an intrinsically harsher image, or might there be a fix for this in the screen settings? I'm currently using this guy's settings, and I've made a blu ray from the MKV.

I think it probably does belong in the tech section. But I wouldn't simply use someone else's settings for color calibration. If you don't want to get a colorimeter, you can use those settings as a starting place perhaps, but don't be surprised if it needs tweaking.

I've tried the values people post for my TV model, and they're atrocious for mine (and in the opposite directions from default settings compared to how I've actually got it calibrated now).

But yes, the 'seams' between sources can stand out more with some settings than others.

Star Wars theatrical versions not coming in 2015
Time

Lt. Hija said:

And the latest I heard about the basic story premise of TFA is that the Alliance wasn't all that victorious as the Special Edition of ROJ led us to believe, especially with its Coruscant revolution party (I always thought that the Coruscant team just won the superbowl and the party merely coincided with the defeat of the Emperor at the Battle of Endor - LOL).

Assuming that the SE of ROJ would constitute a continuity obstacle to TFA, then the reconstitution of the theatrical version (and its subsequent release) would already be one of the things we should be grateful for to TFA.

The Star Wars Aftermath novel (which is canon) starts off with this scene. Basically immediately after the camera wipe in SE RoTJ, imperial forces come in and crash the party.

If I recall correctly, Graham Chapman then turns to the reader and announces that this is all very silly, and that the next person caught acting silly towards the empire will have him to answer to.

Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm

CatBus said:

Ah, OK.  I probably caught some snippet regarding Empire or some other film where Technicolor isn't an option, and assumed he was working with other 35mm sources here too.  Good to know.

Technicolor is indeed not an option for ESB or RoTJ as far as I know. But RoTJ has LPPs. As you'll see a few pages back, ESB is faded but looks to be quite recoverable. So you're right that he's working with other 35mm sources.

Random question, since I don't assume anyone will be coming across this print any time soon, but: How much fading would a 70mm ESB print be expected to have?
