I feel like this thread is our own localized peek into the life of George R. R. Martin.
Remember when people were pissed that Diego Luna wasn’t playing Biggs, because he has a mustache?
Please Ignore This Comment.
Whereas this is a thread for piecing together what the “original” or unreleased cut(s) of Rogue One contained,
and whereas this discussion, starting with Alderaan’s comment, has turned into an argument about whether or not a certain type of film must contain certain elements, which is not the purpose of this thread,
and whereas I have now read the new Rules and Guidelines,
I declare that you guys are getting off topic, and ask that you take your argument to another thread, such as the main Rogue One discussion thread.
Back on topic, I’m intrigued by the two jedi statues, but worry that it’s just flipped shots?
Good point, and I’ve changed the wording slightly to match. Sounds like, given the lack of any major deleted scenes, that there wasn’t anything huge in there that we’re lacking, though - but I’m sure that version of the briefing was the surlier, “I rebel” Jyn.
But we were only interested in the right way. We were interested in the right way and that’s what we went for.
Yes, thanks for that insight, John…
Great find, 005! I’ve made adjustments to the first two posts accordingly. That interview certainly puts some pieces together!
Note the different design of the communications tower. Could be artistic license, might not be.
Matches the shot of the communications tower in the trailer
Does the comm tower look like that in the finished film?
Nope! In the finished film, they put the comm tower’s dish on top of the archives/command center and made it one building. This, as Ronster says, excised the entire sequence of Jyn & Callian running across the beach with the plans in hand, under fire from AT-ATs.

An additional month for every question you ask.
Really? How can it take a month longer just because I asked a question? Don’t you realize how ridiculous that sounds?
Yes. He is being sarcastic because he is very annoyed with people asking.
Also, I’ve made several updates to the top posts. Let me know if I missed anything from our discussion so far.
Wobani and Ring of Kafene are Gilroys not in the Visual Dictionary and not covered in the slightest. Although The Ring of Kafene is covered in the art book and labelled as Planet X. So Planet X may have been originally in the script but not shot until much later and then given it’s Ring of Kafene trading post label as they had no name for it.
I find this part of Ronster’s argument compelling - it points to them being very last minute additions. Given how much we (don’t) see of them, seems possible.
Wobani feels to me like the obvious insert. This could have happened on Jedha as we never really see outside the Transport (Juggernaught).
The prison cell also appears to be very minimal. There is footage of that squid like creature she shares a cell with jumping along the Jedha street so I think Wobani was Jedha originally but it was made in to another planet.
Jyn was being sent to work on the Kyber Crystal mines as that was a plot point.
Ring of Kafene is probably the opening of the original film.
Triangle Face may have featured at the opening on Jedha he might have also put Jyn behind bars.
Ronster, that is some pretty good stuff. Can you provide any links for that stuff?
Yavin changes are the very next thing I want to add to the top-posts - but it feels like a huge muddle. I have a lot of questions.
Do we even know that Jyn was going to start the movie imprisoned?
Start not necessarily but certainly she ends up on Yavin in cuffs.
Very good point. Not sure how that works with Jedha before Yavin. Hm.
Where does the missing rebel starfighter strike on Jedha fit? (Its excision, btw, may be related to inserting the Eadu sequence, if we think that’s totally reshoots)
Do we know there was a missing strike on Jedha? Where does that come from? As for Eadu, it’s possible there could have been a sequence there beforehand but it would have been completely different. My biggest question mark is where Galen fits into all of this pre-reshoots.
See my links here, but I guess we don’t know. Agree about Galen pre-reshoots being a mystery.
Rebel Command know there’s a weapon being built, and it’s going to be tested soon. Is that test still Jedha? I assume so, but then we have the Death Star starting at Scerif (its construction site), then heading to Jedha, then returning to Scerif.
Since Jyn doesn’t learn about the Death Star until she’s at Yavin post-Jedha, what does she think is going on on Jedha with Saw, Bohdi, Cassian, etc?
I think the sequencing of things aren’t too different from the theatrical. Jyn is on Jedha with Saw beforehand via flashbacks, but the sequence with Cassian, Bodhi, K2, etc. doesn’t happen until after Yavin. It was still their first stop, and probably for similar reasons.
I may be coming around to your view on this order of events.
As for the Death Star, who knows.
The novelization came out today. Certainly it was written well before the reshoots. Someone has to grab a copy and find out what it has.
You’d think so, but…
Fans who saw the film will be relieved to know not many scenes were explicitly changed compared to the film.

How do you guys feel seeing stuff on the trailers that aren’t in the film? I think it’s very misleading, I’ve been wondering a long time what all the snippets meant and was looking forward to the subway scene and many others. I mean seriously, like 95% of the dialogue and over half of the stuff shown in advance wasn’t in the movie.
I really hope the BD contains a lot of deleted footage.
Do you feel tricked? I think it’s just a reality of the film-making process. When those trailers were made, I’m sure most if not all of what you saw was in the movie - it’s just that things changed over time. If you demand trailers that only contain what’s in the final film, you can’t have trailers until the final cut.
Plus, it’s pretty helpful for discussions like this one!
Saw Gerrara is bald in flashbacks and bearded in the “present”, therefore I believe most of the early trailer shots are from a cut that has some Jyn in training and/or her abandonment. The dialog “What will you do when they catch you? What will you do if they break you? If you continue to fight, what will you become?” sounds like training or his final speech as he leaves her behind.
I agree this sounds like exactly what you say - but then Jyn would’ve been to Jedha previously, as that’s the same room in which they meet later. So…not sure what to make of that?
A version of the script was produced where not everyone died before Disney gave Gareth Edwards the OK to kill everyone:

He claims none of that ending was actually shot, but that seems to be at odds with the trailer shots of Jyn running around the Imperial base and beach with the plans in hand.
I think Tim’s statement of there being two buildings covers running with the plans. It doesn’t makes much sense to have the archives INSIDE the comm tower/command center. I believe they had to break into the archives, then get to the comm tower, which may or may not have been the command center. If originally the planet was the construction base for finishing the DS, it would make sense to have more than one building.
I think the comm tower was a pretty minor, albeit tall, outlying building, as seen here: https://imgur.com/st5nowj
005, that’s some good stuff! Have any sources I can link to?

Fascinating. Why do you say that Jyn running around the beach with the plans in hand implies they shot an ending where she survived? As far as I can figure, her survival would only affect what happens after she transmits the plans - and the scenes running around on the beach with the plans took place in between getting the plans from the Archive and transmitting them at the Tower (originally separate structures), which has nothing to do with surviving post-transmission.
Miscellaneous
Rogue Raid on Scarif
After stealing the plans from the archive, some portion of Jyn, Cassian and Kaytoo’s escape from the archives involved a sequence shot in a London Underground station, in which they are chased down a long corridor by troops.
The Imperial Archives on Scarif and the Transmission Tower were separate structures. Jyn, Cassian, and other rebels had to run across the beach from one to the other under fire from Imperial forces once they had the plans.
Imperial Astromech C2-B5 was originally supposed to feature in some significant way, as evidenced by his many forms of merchandise. His appearance may have had something to do with droids having or not having personality from frequent memory wipes. He appears to have been a part of the run from the archives to the transmission tower.
Krennic was going to be on the beach in the aftermath of the battle, possibly walking towards the transmission tower.
Once atop the transmission tower, Jyn was confronted by a TIE Fighter.
Imperial Drama and Eadu
Jedha
The Empire was going to be holding Rebel prisoners on Jedha, as shown by captured pilots.
It seems very likely that Kaytoo did not meet Jyn until they were all on Jedha. Is this because Cassian and Jyn went to Jedha to meet up with Kaytoo, or because Cassian and Kaytoo meet Jyn there, then take her to Yavin?
The crashed X-Wing in the background of Chirrut’s introductory fight scene belonged to Saw’s Partisans - possibly indicating there was more to their attack on the Kyber Crystal Convoy.
At least some of the Partisans, such as Moroff, were going to make it off Jedha. From there they’d join the Rebellion and participate in the assault on Scarif.
