I’ll say this: You could cut it out without too much difficulty. She puts the ring into the desk, the ship starts to move, it’s clear which life she’s chosen.
I feel myself warming to the idea of picking this up at a later date, but then I skim read and see the above comment about Darth Maul and I don’t like the idea as much.
Don’t worry, it’s one scene, at the end, in a totally ignorable way.
Finally saw this movie.
When they announced it, I was sure it was a terrible idea. After the movie came out, I was surprised to hear that it might be good. Last night, I was delighted to discover that it is good! Some of the dialogue was clunky, especially towards the start of the movie, and the music was just okay, but those are just about my only complaints. I found Beckett and Qira both really interesting, and am actually hoping for a sequel with Qira as villain. I enjoyed L3, but Rio the 4-armed monkey pilot was maybe my favorite. Glover was great as Lando, Han was pretty good, and at no time have I ever noticed that the new Chewie was not Chewie. The action scenes were all really fun, and we finally got to see a lot of the stuff that we knew existed in the SW Universe but hadn’t actually seen (Imperial Army doing stuff, Kessel, Corellia). There were a lot of nods to the EU (Sabacc, Corellia, Kessel Run, Han’s Imperial days, swoop gangs, Teras Kasi), but not in a clunky way (i.e. I smiled but my wife didn’t even notice them), which is perfect. Other notes: The aquatic worm crime boss was pretty cool, even if you could tell it was a puppet (but what a puppet!), and Maul was unnecessarily eye-rolly.
See you all in 10 years when this thing is complete

Maul was featured prominently in TCW and Rebels, so TPM is not the be-all, end-all for the character’s development.
It is in my world, and many many other people who just watch the movies feel the same.
And therefore he was last seen getting cut in half.
And therefore his appearance in this movie is not just dumb, it’s nonsensical.
It’s obviously not nonsensical in the world in which the film was meant to be a part of (the new canon), and thus the “nonsensical”-ness is just the problem of the standard of “personal canon”

One must consider the effect of that change on AOTC, introducing the Lars on Tatooine, Shmi’s death at the hands of the Sandpeople, etc.
If Jabba’s palace is on Tattoine and Jabba has a bounty on Solo’s life, why would Han chose to hang out in a bar on Tattoine when he has the REST OF THE GALAXY TO HIDE in?
I assume he had to deliver a shipment to Tatooine, wanted a drink while there, and hoped no one would notice him chilling in a dark corner with a lady.
But yes it was not a great decision.
Fantastic Films magazine? They did a lot of wild speculating back in the day between sequels. I need to find those and see if anything was on the money. Not sure they were still in business by the time Jedi was out.

The Internet Archive has their May of 1983 issue, covering ROTJ, here… but they only have the pages covering The Dark Crystal. So we can’t actually read the article titled “Return of the Jedi: The Final Speculation”.
The IA also has an interview with Kurtz, plus some Dark Crystal stuff from February of the same year, and the Dark Crystal coverage from November, 1982. So basically, the articles exist, but IA only has things related to Dark Crystal.
