Idea & Info: Star Wars Replacement Music Suggestions
Time

I should probably check, but I thought some of the duel has no music, whereas the whole duel has music in the Black-and-White-Music-Only version that DJ and ABC did?

Also, there's an alternate Sail Barge Assault on the SE soundtrack release. Obviously, as it's the ROTJ soundtrack it won't sound as good as the others, and ABC's restored versions don't have this track, but it's something at least.

Anyone know which bits of music from the original trilogy weren't actually used in the final films? Here's what I can think of, though I don't know the track names:

  • Binary Suns alternate
  • Some Yoda training stuff
  • Parts of the ESB duel
  • The Luke's Lightsaber Construction scene (although obviously a lot of fan editors want to put this scene back in anyway)

Also, I'm correct in thinking that a lot of the stuff in the Forest Battle concert suite doesn't actually appear in the film, right?

Info Wanted: Which aliens/droids would you replace with Humans (or vice versa)?

If you just twiddled his voice setting he would still be the same droid with the same memories.

If you keep the voice but remove the memories he becomes a blank slate with the same voice.

Like I said, this depends on the idea that droids' personalities are tied to their memories.

If Leia had all her memories removed you'd care right?

So why not Threepio?

See above.

Heck, there are people who lose their memories without personality change!

That being said, we're both beating this to death. I'm in favor of bluescreening a person in an OT Threepio costume into the PT as a member of Amidala's staff, something like that.

regrading/editing original trilogy using blu-rays and german hdtv streams to remove bad but not all specialised/blu-ray changes (* unfinished project *)

I've been hearing rumours that Ian Holm may be replaced by Martin Freeman at the beginning of FOTR in a new FOTR 'ultimate edition' that'll be released when The Hobbit comes out, but I REALLY REALLY hope that's not the case. I'm pretty sure that Peter Jackson would never do that to Ian Holm.

I believe, at most, they would replace the single shot of Ian finding the ring, and none of the rest of the film. I don't think they should either, but it's better than what they could do. At the same time, they've brought Ian (and Elijah Wood as Frodo) in to film bits with FOTR-era Bilbo for the intro to The Hobbit.

What are you if you have none of your prior memories (everything in your head from birth until now gone)?

Are you you or are you something new?

Right, but I'm a human. Obviously droids don't work that way.

We have already seen that droids identical to Threepio can have female voices and we have speaking devices where you can manually shift from a voice type in the real world.

Getting rid of Anthony Daniels in the PT provides a blank slate for an editor to build a more functional droid personality which could be lost in the mind wipe.

Right, it's useful for editors.

Which would be rather tragic for a droid the audience has come to care about.

We are meant to care about the droids more than their owners do, that much is obvious in the writing of the OT.

I guess so? One of the failures of the PT is that Artoo & Threepio are not the main characters the way they are in the OT. Completely replacing one of them with a different character (albeit in the same body) doesn't really help this.

QUESTIONS FOR THE MUSICALLY INCLINED
Time

The standard EADGBE exists because it is versatile and easy for beginners.

I don't think it's necessarily the greatest idea to base your tuning off the idea it will help you progress to other stringed instruments. The guitar is often used for chords, so its requirements are very different from the violin & Co. Guitars are fretted, so the precise hand placement is going to end up a little off. In general, it's just a very different instrument. There are fretted instruments with violin-style tuning, though: mandolin, for example.

Additionally, I'd be concerned about only having 5 strings for any long period of time. The tension in strings on the guitar do help hold the neck in its proper position. One less string is a little less force.

After a memory scrub wouldn't Threepio be a totally new personality anyway?

That's why I hate Artoo's laugh at the end of ROTS.

Threepio is more of a slave than cushy little Anakin ever was.

The good guys give him a lobotomy.

Clearly, in the world of Star Wars, a memory wipe doesn't give a droid a new personality. Given that droids are completely made up, I see no problem with this. It's not a lobotomy if its effects aren't like those of a lobotomy.

In my opinion, the aliens are what helps me to believe in the huge scope of the galaxy in Star Wars. It's one of the things I like in the PT over the OT. We see in the cantina (and later in Jabba's Palace) that there are many other species on this universe, and I find it very strange (from a narrative POV) that only humans formed the Rebel forces. Specially when the aliens are the ones being reprimanded. In RotJ we see a new species on the Alliance (Mon Calamari), but it's still lacking.

This is why I'm all in favor of more prunefaces in ROTJ. Also the alien pilots.
