Unrelated question: is there any picture at all of the failed Dianoga scene?

 I recall seeing one... Or did I just imagined it?

I know it has been a long time but is there any update on this project? I would love to see these clips restored to a decent enough quality

Good job I went to the Ravenna screening! So many European versions are now more accurate ;-)

I was just saying, I never trust my memory and I haven't seen my clips again but you have two videos made with two different devices, see if both confirm the white. Feel free to share both here if you like.

The only thing I can't vouch for is the color of the subtitles. The reels were old and colors you can imagine being quite alterated.

About the perspective, I was sitting on the far left corner but if you use greedo's position it shouldn't be such a problem, as other suggested

I believe it was mono but I'll ask to be sure.

About the subtitles, I have no idea if other European releases had the same font. Is that how it worked back then? If you believe that is the case feel free to link these posts to other threads where European versions are being discussed.

I'm uploading my videos and soon we'll have better images to work on.

By the way, Leo you would go crazy if I told you that the cinema version had also a rather different sound mix that I had never heard before...

Is your source the videotape?

Did you find a matching font for the Greedo scene I sent you? Once I send you the other video of Greedo tomorrow you may post a screen grab here, perhaps our friends here can help us identifying it at once.

The CBS fox tape might have been only English but I'll verify that. It's so hard to find these info because Italian Wikipedia just translates what was written in English without considering Italian releases etc.

Those in Ravenna have a good 16mm version of the film which predates the tape so there is a very good chance that what they have is the theatrical version which, I bet, has the subtitles. We could just ask the owners if it contains subs on Greedo but if it does we would have to go to Ravenna to see for ourselves how these appeared. Asking doesn't cost anything, they might even record that segment for us with a mobile phone perhaps, although I still have to see an Italian collector that wasn't overly protective of his things and very little collaborative... But we may hope! Saves us a trip to Ravenna which doesn't seem to be near any of us, but least of all Leo

Are you fixing the typo in the end credits or are you preserving it? I don't mind if it gets fixed since it clearly wasn't meant to be there to start with.

Which reminds me, some days ago I actually saw a blog post where it said the blogger had just* sold a 16 mm full lenght italian print. I would give my right kidney just to look at it.

More than likely, if you think that nobody saw the subs until 1997 (except in the theatrical version of 1977)

I'm curious to check the 1997 edition again about the wording but I don't have a VHS player anymore. However I remember the original was changed so the Italian version surely reflects the SE changes too and can't be used for reference.

Unfortunately the mkv file that our benefactor created does not play on any of my TVs, only on the computer. It would be nice to have a mkv file compatible with modern TVs.

Excellent my friend. I can't wait to have this version again, I stupidly got rid of my tapes when the 1997 SE came out. It's actually going to be better than anything we've ever seen in Italy.

I did remember no subtitles at all before 1997, you can imagine how confusing it was for us Italian to guess what Jabba was saying in the third movie!

By the way it was once released in Italy a widescreen version on VHS but only in something ridiculous like 100 copies only, these are so rare that I've only seen a picture on Internet once! So I'm glad you can work out the correct proportions from that shameful 1991 VHS.

Leo and I were inspired by your work Laserschwert, we're pretty sure we can manage the HD version of the titles (+subs for Greedo). Early tests were excellent, I'm now waiting to get hold of the old videotapes to check the scene with Greedo and the end titles.

as soon as we get a tape, we'll get back to you on that.... but I'm pretty sure the subtitles were localized.... If they went through all the trouble of localizing the crawl, the "a long time ago", the Lucasfilm card, why not the Greedo scene?

As far as I remember they were. Any country which dubs movies had greedo subtitled in their own language. It make sense that a country like Sweden where they only subtitle the films they would just use the original master with english subtitles on greedo and just superimpose their own, it's cost effective.

I guess he means that if you choose a language you'll get the crawls in that language. This is what they did with the star wars boxset in my country. You select the language at the beginning and the titles are changed into your language accordingly (yet you can still change the audio through the film)

If I may add a thing, if such a thing was possible I guess you'll have to have also Greedo's scene with subtitles different for each language.

I have the iso images of the NTSC GOUT, while waiting for the (I assume) PAL GOUT which should arrive this week in my mail from Amazon. I ripped the French tracks but the problem is they are longer than the Despecialized editions. I can upload them somewhere if you want. People told me how to sync the PAL GOUT, assuming the French tracks are longer than Harmy's versions, but it's the contrary. The audio tracks are longer than the movie in VLC but not in any other Mac Software I own.

Speaking of which, one thing that we're planning to do with Leo on the Italian version is to give to the voices their original pitch. The audio length should then match the NTSC version aside from giving us back the sound as it should be and not what we've been accustomed to with the PAL home video conversion.

Although, as I said, me and Leo are working on a full-Italian version (base on Harmy's V2.0), where titles are replaced with the original Italian ones and so are the subtitles to Greedo.
