Dubbing
Time

Thanks Leo for bringing me up. My very first article on my blog was just about the "Quoti War"!

http://doppiaggiitalioti.wordpress.com/2011/01/12/i-cavalieri-jedi-paladini-della-matematica/

[the image reads:
- I was in the Quoti War with your father.
- Don't you mean the "Clone Wars", you old fart?]

For me Star Wars in Italian represents the best and the worst of italian dubbing and dubbing in general: fantastic dubbers, one hell of adaptation (down to the names) and then they fall flat on their arse on small things like "clone wars" and "dusting crops".

On a thread like this I could go on writing for days, literally, so I'll just enjoy what you people will post.

@ bttfbrasilfan: does your version really say: "The Force can have a strong influence on assholes."

I find that pretty... unbelievable! LOL! But I've seen far worse in my experience.

Well, the guy you talked to who worked in that book store, said there was the '76 release (I assume this is what we have preserved) and an Italian re-release in '78 or '79, I just thought it would be interesting if it is the re-release version, and if it is, I would guess it was treated with a new dub with all the additional scenes and audio work needed for that cut?

It would be the first time in the history of Italian dubbing to have a re-dub after only two years from the first release, but then again this film did have a peculiar story on its Italian distribution.
I still couldn't get a hold of the curator of the first dub... but I'm now in touch with a professional dubber (voice of Steve Buscemi) so I might ask him if the guy is still alive.

About the SEN scene, I find it very nice... playing with the kids and everything. It shows that he's not a villain, I never considered him to be one but that scene surely adds more humanity to the character.

Leonardo and me were thinking to work on the Italian version just as we have seen the German version been proposed and developed. It would consist in the audio track from the 2006 DVD which luckly seems to have remained unchanged and we'd have to re-do in HD all the titles at the beginning and end of the movie based on the original VHS tape + the subtitles to greedo.

Believe me, some people REALLY believe that Eastwood character's name is Joe in the first, Manco in the second.. etc and they even get annoyed if you explain the truth to them, I guess that's what I get from hanging around imdb forums.

Anyway, for those who might be wondering about Manco, it is actually "monco" and this is what it means http://www.wordreference.com/iten/monco

The dollar trilogy at the cinema? Wow, neither I have ever seen it and I live in Italy!
I don't know much about the restored versions and I call myself a Sergio Leone's fan. Although... still a better fan that those who call Eastwood's character from For A Few Dollars More "manco" just because it's listed so on imdb and believe that Manco is his actual name.

But I digress... the grain was indeed part of THX. As I said Lucas should have just recycled his own idea of Orwell 1984 into a new film instead of fiddling eternally with his own 70's movies, continuously updating them to the latest fashion in cinematography (such as crystal clean images and CGI-a-lot).

For me the CGI bug that substituted the rat was the biggest slap in the face.

Yes, that's the sub file I was talking about, I'm glad you still have it. :) Silver didn't, so it would be great if you could please send it to me when you are able to, thanks.

Rogue-theX, thanks for the suggestion, will check it out.

I'm back home only on the 19th, will that slow you down msycamore?

Oh, I forgot to mention it, it's the subtitles I did for the '78 restored english version of the film, I think I may have posted them but if you guys don't have it it's not the end of the world, it would just save me a lot of time if I decided to include them. I had not yet synced them to the film though.

I suppose it's the same file that I'm working on substituting it with Italian subtitles?

I would help you msycamore but at the moment I'm not home and I'll come back only in the end of July. I hope SilverWook has a copy.

Your perfectionism on this project is both awesome and appreciated. The original version of this film needed such a preservation, and I think your efforts are one for the history books. I simply cannot wait to replace my flawed DVD version. Thank you, msycamore!

Haven't you heard? Msycamore is awesomeness itself.

Another bit of THX esoterica on Ebay...

Wish they had scanned the actual photo in question so I could decide if it's worth getting or not.

You could ask the seller if he could email you a scan of that photo. Sounds very interesting.

@msycamore: good things come to those who can wait ;)

Well, Brave New World is a classic that is often read in school and it was the inspiration for Orwell's "1984" (although this is not entirely true). Any reinterpretation of 1984 is therefore also a reinterpretation of Brave New World in a way. However in Brave New World sex was completely "free" and sexuality was actually imposed on kids who had to start from a very young age :/

I've never seen the 70's adaptation but I'll check it out. However, although I'm usually a fan of dystopian stories, I did not like the novel too much. My favourite dystopian novel is "We" by Zamyatin which is the very first of its kind and is actually the real inspiration for both Huxley and Orwell.

The BT-16 dialogue still had a meaning that could easily be guessed. But two disconnected things like "The android. The hang-over writing".. sounds more like someone had a hang-over when they were recording.
I'm tempted to leave those two unsubtitled. One thing is over-hearing weird stuff, another is to actually read it, it will just confuse Italians. Its absence won't be missed.
In any case, I'll check with Leo the whole adaptation once I'm done with it.

The pic was a screengrab from a scene where a bald man is staring confused at numers on a wall... which is what I though "visual binaries" could be.

Once again the official translation doesn't help at all here, they just went for another option. I guess I'll stick to a direct translation. I'm just wondering what the hell they were talking about lol. I mean, can anyone in the THX world get a hang-over? I didn't get that impression. Imagine getting intoxicated with alcohol while you're on a regular drugs intake, not to mention that a hang-over is counter-productive.

Msycamore, I've got this line which is a bit cryptic...

00:25:30,862 --> 00:25:33,888
-The android, the hung-over writing.

Aside from this line, the voices over the radio seem to have reception problems but I don't know how android and hung-over writing fit into that. Any idea? Could you check the scene for me?
