Info & Help Wanted: in identifying which version of Alien (1979) this is...
Time

I recorded Alien off TV here in Italy because I knew this particular channel had a rare version with localized titles and obviously I’m hoping to make a preservation out of it before the Italian print disappears from existence… you know how that goes.

I expected it to be an old copy but the quality seemed better than what they usually put on TV (and possibily better than my 1999 DVD?), so I had the suspiction it might have been from Bluray or some other version that I’m not aware of.

I can’t recall all the differences between the many version that came out on home video (is there any visual comparison on internet like there is for Star Wars films?). What I remember is that 2003 remastered DVD edition had a stupid alien hanging from the chains before Brett dies while 1999 DVD version and 2012 Bluray version didn’t.

I’ve also heard that in the Bluray they added all the previously cut scenes like the cocoon scene, or the Alien hitting the cat box… these scenes are not in this TV version. So by exclusion I would say it’s neither the 2003 edition nor the Bluray. Could it be from 1999 DVD or any previous source?

Can anyone identify which version of Alien this is from these couple of screengrabs?

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

I finally managed to sit down for a couple of afternoons and finish the subtitles in Italian for the US preservation of THX... some of you might remember from many pages ago that Italians have never seen the 1976, nor the 1978 version of this film so, in exchange of providing the rare Italian cut of this film (with extra SEN scene) I asked msycamore if to the preservation DVD we could add Italian subtitles as an extra, I was to make the subtitles for my fellow countrymen... that was 2 years ago, LOL.

Before I forward them to you msycamore I passed them to Leo for the needed proofreading. I hope you will still finish your fantastic preservation project... may the two-years-waiting-time-for-my-subtitles be of inspiration to you my friend ;-)

To be honest, if the seamless branching could be achieved without spending thousands of dollars I believe that in a forum like this it would have already come out! I'm optimistic for the future but I have little hope now.

I do not mind having a disc for Italian and another for the English version. It would be nice to have it all in one bluray but two discs instead of one is not a big deal.

I would definitely not accept lagging.

Welcome back msycamore! I was also guilty of abandoning the subtitling in Italian that many italians are expecting since we've never seen the "original" version of the film here. So your disappearance from the project gave me some time to sort some situations. I also gave an exam yesterday so I can finally finish  the subs.

Gets me raging when stuff goes missing in the mail, I've lost plenty that was shipped at my girlfriend's house. I know the feeling.

About the Italian audio version, me and Leo expect sometime in the near future to obtain the audio from a HI-Fi stereo version which could prove to be higher quality than the abysmal 192kbps audio from the GOUT that Leo had to use.

I appreciate your effort to put all the international versions of Harmy together, I thought Harmy and his "crew" were going to do that eventually, have I just imagined? I thought people couldn't figure out how to actually do the switching between different "video tracks" depending on which language you choose. (I know this has a specific name but I don't remember it)

Holy! We need a Ocean's 11 type plan, fast!

I hope someone can at least attend, and tell us if the extended SEN scene is in there. With our luck, this will be yet another version to drive us insane. ;)

Like Vader said on bluray.... Noooooooooooo!

lol hopefully not another version!

I wish someone would go there and film this thing, modern technology is small and hard to notice, we don't need a professional set up with tripod and expensive equipment, a frigging digital camera with a spacious memory card would do, just turn off the viewer and nobody will notice you! I did this with Star Wars, that's how people from this forum got to find out the exact font that was used in the European subtitles to Greedo.

So many questions to be answered here: is the extended SEN scene there? What's the chronology of the trial/arrest? How long is the movie really? does the UK version differ from other European version? Could it be the same as the American theatrical version? In this case nobody would have seen it since the 70s!

I know, sorry guys. Life has been very very complicated in the past year and a half!
Not to mention that last year me and Leo were focused onto finishing the Italian version of Star Wars Despecialized (which came out great by the way).

I still need to finish Italian subs for msycamore's THX project, it's not even that much left to do but still! (last file update was in 2012, sorry msycamore).

So can anyone seed THX italian version for the newcomers? I don't seem to find it on my hard disk

I thought this thread was kinda abandoned, instead it was me who wasn't receiving updates!

More people are interested in the rare Italian cut that msycamore made, any chance it could reappear on myspleen? At the moment I do not remember where I've put my copy (except for the one in my DVD collection).

Now I have some catching up to do on this thread
