Btw, today I showed it to my dad (he never saw E9 before) and he s still not aware it was a fanedit 😄 During the ghosts scene he was like “oh, finally, there’s Yoda” 😄

Little update: after completing 17 chapters, the author decided to release a movie version with some upgraded animation scenes. “Heir to the Empire - Part One” will be realeased on Christmas 😉

As the title indicates, this project seeks to bring the Dark Empire audio drama closer to the current Star Wars canon by crafting Dark Empires: The Canon Edit.

The aim of this fanedit is to align the events of Dark Empire with the narrative established by the live-action films and series. It’s a reimagining that bridges the gap between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy, setting the stage for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

What to Expect?
• How the Emperor Returned: This fanedit ties Palpatine’s resurrection in The Rise of Skywalker to the groundwork laid in Dark Empire. His essence transfer power is highlighted, and various of his other clone bodies are shown, making his return more plausible and consistent with the sequels.

• New Force Powers: The story introduces advanced force abilities like the mentioned essence transfer, the Force storm, and Force projection, powers that resonate with what we see in the sequels.

• A Darker Luke Skywalker: This version delves into Luke’s struggles with darkness, echoing themes explored further in The Last Jedi.

• The Solo Legacy Reframed: One of the key changes is the removal of the Solo twins. Instead, the unborn child of Han and Leia is recontextualized as Ben Solo, aligning with the canon storyline.

This fanedit reimagines Dark Empire as a piece of the Star Wars cinematic universe, respecting the original work while ensuring it fits snugly into the galaxy far, far away.

It is a “labor of love” for fans who want to see the EU’s greatest stories find their place in the current cinematic canon.

The complete list of cuts and additions:

• Chapter 1
-I added “A long time ago…” (I borrowed it from Everest Production’s fan made LoT audio drama, the line was read by a voice actor who was imitating Palpatine’s voice, which I think fits well with this particular story);
-I trimmed the opening crawl (to avoid any mention of the Solo twins).

• Chapter 2
-I trimmed the dialogue between Luke and Leia (removed the mention of the twins and the future generation of the Jedi);
-the last scene was removed (as I felt it was too much out of character for Han to decline helping Lando).

• Chapter 3:
-I removed the entire first scene (as it had too many mentions of the twins, and, it was also a straight followup to the scene from chapter two I had removed);
-removed one mention of “the children” from another scene.

• Chapter 4:
No editing/changes needed, I left it as it was.

• Chapter 5:
I trimmed one dialogue, removing the mention of Mako being the one who had introduced Han to the smuggling business (as it contradicts Han’s origins presented in “Solo”).

• Chapter 6:
I cut the cringy dialogue of Luke and the Emperor from the first scene.

• Chapter 7:
Removed the mention of the Solo twins.

• Chapter 8:
No editing/changes needed, I left it as it was.

• Chapter 9:
-I removed the mention of the Solo twins in the opening scene;
-I decided to keep the line “you will train all my children” as it can be interpreted in a more general way (like in a “one day, if I have more children, you will train all of them” sense);
-I had to remove the last scene (too many mentions of the Solo twins and the “third child”);

I also added two scenes (trimmed and blended together) from “Empire’s End” #1, using them as an open-ending epilogue of the story. The scene foreshadows the Emperor’s return in Episode IX.
It provides an explanation of why Palpatine disappeared and stayed in the shadow during the next twenty years, setting up the events of TROS.
As he explains, Luke destroyed all his best clones, therefore he was forced to take one that was genetically unstable and is now in decay. He also says he will  journey to his “place of power” which, in the context of the Sequel Trilogy, can be interpreted as Exegol.

I like the first line “we are all one through the Force” but the second one “as it carries us” is a bit awkward. So I’d say keep the cameo subtle with only the first line as to not mess with it too much.

I agree. Of course, its freaking awesome that this project reached the scale of having a cameo of someone who actually played in Star Wars, but still, I dont think ot deserves more than one short line. Like, c mon, Ahsoka or Mace Windu have one short line and why this person would have so many? 😉 i agree that the best would be a subtle cameo.

About the Palpatine’s masterplan, maybe just cut after “What could you give me?” and leave it lile that, so the audience doest know whats the plan and whats the Kylo Ren’s game ?

Well, half of the book has been adapted so far.

The series hasn’t good worse, difficult to say if it has got anu better, quality speaking it maintains the same amateur high lvl quality of the first episodes. Probably it will get even better as the story progresses (Mara Jade meeting Luke etc).

Watching this edit I felt I’m watching the Rots true version that I ve always wanted to see. I loved incorporating Qui Gon’s voice and Dagobah, I really missed those scenes in the original version. Great job!

I think your EP I of Mando is already a perfect s01 movie. You cut all unnecessary stuff and fillers and left the best of the s01. I ll never rewatch s01 in an original form as long as I have your movie edit 😄

Season 2 though, well, probably it would benefit a lot of there were 2 movies out of it (most of the episodes, even fillers, are just so damn good).

With Ahsoka and Obi-Wan it should be easier, they suppose to be a limited one season events with a one particular storyline.

Anyway, any possibilities of EP VII/VIII or Anthology format in the future? 😀 Btw just imagine how cool it would be to see your Mando Eps VII, VIII and IX and then the sequel trilogy as X-XII 😄 it would be a dream come true, just like watching the “original sequel trilogy” made in the 90s and then the Eps X-XII (ehhh, sorry, got carried away with my star wars dreams xD)

Well, that’s how I feel when I watch your Mando edits. Btw long time ago, If I remember correctly, you said you d do an alternative version of those edits, titled as STAR wars Episode VII, Ep VIII etc.

By anthology style I meant no opening crawl, just something like “The Mandalorian: A Star Wars Story” 😀

Out of curiosity, I know it’s too soon to say without the original material, but do you think You ll make a movie edit versions of Ahsoka or Obi-Wan or Boba Fett serieses?

I love it. Of course, I miss some bits (ep1 opening sequence, some Ahsoka scenes) but overall, fantastic job, great editing. As a one concise movie, it s even better than the previous one (mostly thanks to the original material, but still).

It really feels like watching a proper Episode VIII made in the 90s 😉

Will you ever consider releasing a version of those movies in style of Anthology Movies (RO, Solo)?

I like the idea from DOTF for R2 to tell 3PO about everything he had forgotten, though. But we don’t have the resources to cobble anything satisfactory to imitate it.

I think we would need to implement it as some kind of quick sequence of the Saga flashbacks. Though, I dunno if that’s doable.

Mr. DominicCobb implemented that in a test clip for his own TRoS re-cut. You should definitely check that out, because it’s as seamless as it can possibly get! 😉
