Need help with VOB issue
Time
So, I tried the AviSynth route..and it wouldn't load into Vegas.

Then I tried the VirtualDub2-mpeg and that worked. I used huffyuv and the 7minute file ended up beign 12.5 gigs. Ah well, it's only temporarily anyway. Now I've got to figure out how to capture the audio. It has the same problem with only the 15 seconds going on. It's AC3 2 channel according to DVD Decrypt. Any ideas how I can get that ripped out as a 2 channel WAV? When I try to rip it from DVD Decryptor it saves it as a VOB. How do I extract it out of the VOB?

Thanks for the tips guys.

The DVD should be NTSC, as I would imagine the source footage he obtained was as well (live club performance here in the US), but I never bothered to look. I can't see why he would have encoded to PAL considering this. He made the DVD for himself and made a copy for me. I've got a bunch of options so it would seem that having a few more can't hurt.

The easiest way would be to load up the M2v file in VirtualdubMod and export it as an avi using the Lagaryth lossless codec. I've had a few problems with the huffyuv codec when using Vegas but Lagaryth works like a charm.

Also what format is original DVD? Is it Pal or NTSC? If it's Pal then just use VirtualdubMod but if it's NTSC then its best to use DVD2AVI and set the 2Field operation" in the Video menu to "forced film" to remove the 2:3 pulldown. This will give you a 23.976fps avi file. If your output video file has stuttery movement then the NTSC may probably have been encoded at 29fps without using the pulldown method. If this is the case just set it to "none". Also don't forget to change the "clip & resize settings" to > Filter type = precise bicubic, Video aspect = free & move the resize slider all the way up if using an anamorphic source.

I already have the huffyuv codec installed and that's been working like a charm with my capture program Winfast PVR (alas it's not working properly when I've tried capturing with Vegas for some reason). Anyway, That might be the simplist way since I have plenty of hard drive space. I've never used AviSynth but I might try that route if worst comes to worse. I'll post later on this evening with whatever results come out of this. Any other suggestions would be great if anyone has any.

The neatest way would be to use an AviSynth script with MPEG2Source(). Install AviSynth, and get the DGMPGDec plugin. Run DGIndex, open your M2V file, and save a D2V index file. Now in notepad, type the following:

LoadPlugin("pathname\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("filename.d2v")

Save with the extension .avs. Hopefully Vegas should be able to open this as if it were an AVI file.

Failing that, you could use VirtualDub-MPEG2 to load the M2V, and save out as an AVI. Use a lossless codec like huffyuv or Lagarith - but you will still need a fair amount of drive space.

I did the demux in DVD Decryptor last night and couldn't get the files to import into Vegas. The M2V wouldn't import at all and I also tried raw but the raw file still showed up as 15 seconds. But the good news is when I got the M2V file I could see it as a whole in Media Player, but like I said Vegas wouldn't touch it. Any idea how to convert the M2V into an uncompressed AVI or something else usable in Vegas?

Thanks for your help too by the way. It's much appreciated.

Need help with VOB issue
Time
Hi guys, I've got a DVD that was sent to me by another fellow preservationist. What I'm looking to do is edit the VOB files and then re-encode them using Sony Vegas.

Here is my issue:

The DVD doesn't appear to be encrypted in any way as I can simply copy the files over to my hard drive.

That said, here are the contents:

VTS_01_1
VTS_01_2
VTS_01_3
VTS_01_4
VTS_01_0
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO

The total runtime is 47:35 long with a total of 10 chapters.

I've been able to open and edit VTS_01_2 through VTS_01_4 without a problem using Vegas. The problem comes when opening VTS_01_1 . The file is somewhere between 15:43-20:51 minutes long (didn't have time this morning to find out the exact length). But when I open the file in Vegas it only shows up as 00:15.14 seconds in length and the video is choppy as though the file is intact, but just not displaying correctly. It's only showing 15 seconds worth of video as though most of the video is hidden in that 15 seconds somewhere somehow. The file is 99megs. So there's no way the file should be displaying only 15 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue? By the way, I'm using Microsoft Vista 32 Bit edition. and haven't had too much luck using DVD Decryptor to put it into a file or files that I can edit in Vegas. Either they show up in full and displayable in Media Player and they won't open in Vista or it loads in Vista and won't display anything more than 15 seconds.

Your first words of reaction after watching one of the PT movies for the first time.
Time
Long story short..

TPM - what the hell? I think the opening shot of the Neimoideans needed to be in their own language with subtitles. That's what started it off poorly for me. It didn't feel like Star Wars until they landed on Tatooine. But the movie got gradually better for me the more times I watched it. I don't despise Jar Jar as much as I used to. He's the idiot I love to hate, which makes me love him all the more.

AOTC - There are some parts that irk me, the death of the fake Amidala for starters. After that, the movie got a lot better. I liked it more than TPM, but now I have more of an affinity for watching TPM, but I think AOTC is a better movie.

ROTS - Awesome flick, but such a downer. The battle droid voices irked me a lot. And Obi-wan should have never said "how'd this happen! We're smarter than this." Jedi are completely idiots, they'd get the funny force tingle to warn them. But this film I do enjoy.

I can sympathize with your frustration. George Lucas is a pretty stubborn man. But you know, there is that phrase "never say never" because there's always that slim possibility he may change his mind, especially if there's money to be made. And possibly down the road, he may realize that the SE was a mistake.

I don't have that issue with my HDTV...but what I have is a rarity these days and that's because I have a 43" Toshiba 4:3 HDTV. I chose not to get a widecreen HDTV because I watch a lot of TV and I'd hate having to distort the screen. Until TV goes widescreen, it just makes sense to continue making 4:3 televisions. You can still watch widescreen movies, you'll just have the black bars.

I haven't seen the GOUT yet, so it's hard to say what it would look like on my tv, but I'm guessing it would be pretty good since it's smaller than what you have.

Originally posted by: CO
I bought a HDTV in 2005 for about $1,200 dollars. It is an RCA 52" Widescreen. You can get a 50" HDTV at Bestbuy in the range of $1,000-$2,000 depending on if you want DLP & LCD or just a picture tube that I have which it much thicker in the back and takes up more room. Now if you want a Plasma, they are nice as hell, but very expensive, as you can hang them on your wall.

If I didn't have an HDTV I probably wouldn't have a problem with the GOUT, cause it is not that noticeble on a 4 x 3 TV, but on an HDTV you have to zoom the picture to get whats called a fake anamorphic picture so you don't have black bars on all 4 sides. But what happens is you are losing more resolution everytime you zoom so it makes any defects in the picture quality worse! By watching just 5 minutes of the GOUT you can see grain on almost every frame especially the Hoth & Tatooine parts, and the colors are very dull too compared to the SE cause the picture has been untouched for 13 years. The other problem is the movie has that blurry feel to it because you are zooming the picture so you don't get that crisp image.

Now don't get me wrong there are parts of the movies that are pretty good quality, but they are so inconsistent cause they just didn't go back and clean the film frame to frame like the SE. Are they are unbearable? Not at all, as I have watched them many times. Are they are inferior compared to the SE quality, YES!!!! And that is the problem for anyone who watches great quality movies on an HDTV, you pop in the GOUT and the quality sticks out, where as on a 27" 4 x 3 TV, it is harder to notice any quality issues so it is more of a level playing field.

I don't want to ruin anyones love for SW, but I honestly wish I never bought an HDTV and never saw the SE quality on them, cause if I still had my 36" 4 x 3 TV, I think I would be able to enjoy the GOUT more, and probably would resist even jumping in the HD-DVD market for many years in fear that the SE would only be released in BlueRay. But that gets to my whole point, I have to resist great technology to enjoy the inferior quality of the OOT. That makes me sad.

Keep thet comments alive and solidify your points to the same people who have no control over what happens? You're preaching to the wrong choir if you think repeating the over and over in these forums is going to do any good.

Tales of the New Republic - fan film
Time
Found this over at the TFN fan film forum, reposting the message from the author...

------------------

Hey Everyone,

WHAT A WEEK!!! I've just returned from C4 (arrived this morning but I'm only now functional)
Now that I have easy access to the net I'd like to clear the air and the rumors about Tales of the New Republic.

Firstly and you know this one, it's nothing to do with Lucasfilm, it's not official, it's 100% a fan project. I can't call it a fan film because there is no film, or series, or whatever. It was purely meant to be a 'what if' and in no way meant to confuse people regarding the new Clone Wars series. I was very surprised at that part of the confusion as I thought it was very clear and very well promoted by Lucasfilm that they were doing a CGI Clone Wars series and a Live action show set between Ep3-4. For that very reason we stayed away from that era.

It was quiet amazing to watch the reactions, and yes we did hold back on saying exactly what the project was, just because we were interested in peoples comments.

So what was the point/reason for doing it...
Simply put, because we could and we wanted to. I've been wanting to make a CGI short based in the Star Wars universe for about 7-8 years (When I was working on the Roughnecks series), I even contacted several people at LFL, but they were “not interested in TV and were too busy with the movies” So I just figured one day I'd do my own short. And while I'm a big fan of Genndy Tartokovsky's series (I was at the Emmy's the year he won both animation category's) I was always more interested in the 'what happened after' of the Expended Universe.
Fast forward to this year, the 30th anniversary fast approaching and Gentle Giants Animated statues. When I saw these and especially the Leia and R2, I decided that something HAD to be done with them. The design and look took all the great ideas from Genndy's 2D series, made them 3D and then applied that to the original trilogy characters. The problem was that time was short. So instead I thought, lets make a short teaser trailer and see if people like this idea.

And that's what we did. Will we go further, I'm not 100% sure, but it's possible, a lot of people liked the direction we were going.

So how was it done. All of the modeling, animation, lighting and rendering was in Newtek's Lightwave 3D www.newtek.com The compositing was mostly Adobe After Effects with a little Digital Fusion.

Now to the DAVE School (www.DAVESchool.com) bit. I work at the school but this wasn't a class project, most of the work was done by both current and graduate students however. I invited a small group of graduates to help me a few months back. We made some good progress but May25th was coming at us fast. So I started asking more and more students to help. Some put in a few hours here and there, some put in weeks of work. The problem with making a 'preview/trailer' is that it needed to look like it's from a large vast production and you're just showing a few bits from here and there. With about 10 days to go, I think we had 3 or 4 of the 40 shots finished. Most of those were the simpler ships shots. Luckily for me one of the classes needed a filler project for 3 days and I was able to recruit them. Then for the final week it was mostly down to a small team of 5 to complete all the shots. We basically moved into the school and hardly left until it was done. Without the support of the School, the students and the equipment there, we wouldn't have been done in time. Sure the animation isn't groundbreaking, and many of the shots DO need more work, but for the short time we had, it's not bad. Anyone who has worked on a project like this will better understand what goes into it.

During this final week I started uploading a few teaser images onto the website in the hopes of getting people to return on the Friday (25th) and watch the video. We emailed a couple and I mean just a couple of people a link to the site and off it went. Over the next 2 days it spread, I forget the exact numbers but I think 20,000 people or so had visited the site before the video was uploaded.

My goal was always to have it done for the 30th anniversary on May 25th. At 11:59 EST the video was uploaded, a short time later a smaller version for YouTube was uploaded and then it was off. The next morning I headed to C4 with some DVD's to hand out in the hope of getting some fans to watch. By the time I landed in LA things had gone mad! Sites like www.Aintitcoolnews.com had picked it up and the website, along with the YouTube video we're being downloaded by the truckload. The problem was a lot of people thought it was a real production, unfortunately it's not. I emailed Harry at AintItCool, even put a disclaimer on the website, but that didn't slow the downloads and the rumors. We were the #1 Animation video on YouTube last weekend and the website had now way passed 100,000 visitors, with over 2 Million hits.

It's a real shame Lucasfilm had it removed from YouTube, we had over 170,000 views in 3 days and was going well. I've no idea what the problem was as they didn't say, never emailed, never contacted. I was under the impression that LF supported Fan projects, allowing use of Logos, music etc. I see them all over YouTube, Atom, TheForce.Net etc.. Of course no profit was ever intended or expected. It's also odd as there are currently no less than 10 clones of the original video still on you tube, so this seems like a targeted response, again no idea why. Maybe someone will enlighten me. I did state clearly on the video text that this was a "'what if' teaser in the style of a cartoony animated Star Wars show"

For the moment (until I hear otherwise) our website for the project is still up at www.TalesOfTheNewRepublic.com I do plan to add more stills and a complete description of each model and shot, plus FAQ and other bits to help everyone know what we are up to. I'll also include more about the people that work on this (once they are ok with that).

Many Many Thanks for all the sites that linked to us, spread the word and ALL the comments, both good and bad! :-)

and May the Schwartz be with you....

All the best,

I do understand what the point of the website is. I read and signed the petition like the rest of you did. Lets carry on that fight and continue to petition. It's the only constructive way to get what we're looking for.

By the way, I do not own the GOUT. I refused to purchase another copy of the Prequels in order to get them. As do you, I want the unaltered OT movies as they were...and cleaned up and widescreen...and all of that. I don't want the SE's. I already own them.

That said, I own all 3 prequels...and I 99.9% of the time watch the SE DVDs as they are an improvement over the VHS versions. I do not own the laserdiscs, but I do own the last retail box set of the VHS OOT. I've not watched them in the last 5 or 6 years simply because I enjoy the quality of the DVDs more and I want to keep the VHS somewhat safe from use in case I do want to go back and watch them at some point.

So why do I want the OOT on DVD? Maybe one day I'll want to go back and watch them. And simply, I agree with many of you in that the original movies need to be preserved for the generations to come.

I mean, doesn't there come a point where you just accept his decisions and live with what you have? Or will you respectfully continue the fight that was begun here so long ago? The key word is respect, which I believe some of you have lost sight of.

I believe in the intent of originaltrilogy.com and I enjoy the preservation that's going on here. I think it's great for the community. But your constant whinning is going to get you absolutely no where. It's not constructive, and certainly doesn't reflect well on the goals we've set to achieve.

With all due respect Sunday, I don't think you understand what the point of this website is. The point is to get the OOT on DVD in the quality that every DVD that is out on the market these days. DVD has been on the market for 10 years now, and we have laserdisk quality for the OOT versions of movies, how else should we feel? Thanks George for giving us Laserdisk quality DVD's that were great quality in 1993!!!!!!

As for respect, do you really think Lucas reads these forums? And if he does, then he has too much time on his hands. There is no respect by our side, cause there is no respect from Lucas towards these versions. Do you remember these quotes:

"I am sorry you fell in love with a half completed film."

"The Special Editions are the ones that exist now, and I don't recognize the originals anymore, and I am not going to take the time and money and remaster them, so if you want them, their on VHS."

"OK, we are putting out the unaltered DVD's in September, so we will see if this is what people want, it will all come out in the end."

Tell me one creator who talks like that to his fans? Name one please? Can you imagine Quentin Tarantino chastising his fanbase cause Jackie Brown tanked at the boxoffice, or Ron Howard pissing all over his fans cause Far and Away was utterly hated by the fans in 1992? No, both films have gotten great DVD treatment, and the directors don't thumb their nose at their fanbase cause the movies underperformed.

So by your rationale Sunday, we should keep waiting and waiting for the next great bootleg on the market, cause that is the reason I came to this site, buy the OOT illegally!!!!

New Clone Wars Trailer!
Time
Why not wait until it comes out before pre-judging the storyline? Trailers are meant to entice their audience. From what I've heard it's mostly character driven storylines. And we're still getting a live action series as well, but we'll have to wait longer for that and it won't have any of the major characters involved.

The animation and the artwork, as far as I'm concerned, is a bit odd. Then again, so was the Clone Wars 2-D series. I never watched Saumarai Jack, but once I got used to seeing it, it wasn't bad at all. I can see why people might rip this series apart, mostly because of the already existing canon timeline set by the movies which only sets up a person to be dissapointed.

Originally posted by: andy_k_250
Come on - there's good computer animation and bad. Of course, it's pretty subjective. My opinion is this stinks. Something like Homestar Runner, while crude and simple in comparison to the amount of effort put into this new series - is better (to me) because it's appropriate for the material and consistent. Here, you have ships, planets, landscapes almost identical to the quality used in the movies, and then you have big-head Yoda waltz in looking like Lego Star Wars. It's just not consistent. It would be like sticking Shrek-quality animation into Revenge Of The Sith and expecting no reaction from the audience. Or better yet - it's like a CGI Jabba stuck in a movie from 1977. The animation is not consistent, and there seems to be no reason, not even stylistically. It's not pretty to look at, so why animate it if it could be done with live actors? Oh wait - maybe it's because the story is not strong/concise to fit into a 2-3 hour movie and it would cost too much to use the actual people. Like I said, I could be wrong - but if this is really going to be that epic of a story, why couldn't it be told the PT films? So what do you end up with - uninspired animation aiming for realism but falling short and a story that is apparently all fighting (even action movie trailers have more than a few lines of throwaway dialogue). Sounds like the Mortal Kombat CGI direct-to-VHS movie to me.

I'm not frustrated that I don't have a new Star Wars 30th anniversary collector's set. And I'm certainly not frustrated that I don't have the deleted scenes. Why? Because I've got a life. The only box set I own that you mentioned is the Lord of the Rings. Does it smack the hell out of any of the SW box sets? Sure it does. But you don't see me here complaining about it to the choir over and over. I signed the petition on the main page so that we might see the unaltered trilogy as it was...restored..widescreen in all it's cleaned up glory.

We've not gotten it so far, but at least we've gotten close. We can keep trying, or we can keep complaining. The complaining is the only thing around here getting old as far as I'm concerned.

I see where you're going with your statement, but there's a much more constructive way of achieving the goal than the way people are going about it.

I'd love to see a 30th anniversary box set with the ANH deleted scenes as much as the next guy, but do you think Lucas honestly owes us something? Like Lucas is inclined to get off his ass just because you want him to? Get real and face reality. How old are you? I mean, how old r u? Think constructively. We've got a petition here, why not get out the word and let him know how badly we want this release, without taking the approach that he should just give it to us because he's a lazy ass, which he certainly isn't. You try producing 3 two+ hour movies and come back and tell me how just lounges around on your ass all day.

Star Wars Episode III - how the fans would want it (* unfinished project? *)
Time
I suppose if I could change a few things in ep3 it would be the droid voices (which were unecessary) and Obi-Wan saying "we're smarter than this". I guess I'd also have James Earl Jones re-record his dialogue. It didn't have the same umph that his dialogue did in the OT. Beyond that I'm fine with the movie. The extra scenes would have been nice additions though.

How would you feel about completely removing the scene where R2 sets the Battle Droids on fire. For me it's a prime example of something that is unesscisary and really slows down the opening of the film (aside from being unconvincing from an animation point of view, for me anyways). I think it would serve the film better to get rid of it, and make way for a bit of the unused material on the Invisible Hand. Just a thought.
