DD DTS THX [BD project] (* unfinished project *)

@Jetrell @Rick2525:

do you refer to this one? Even if it's an unofficial THX trailer, I like it and I want to add it to the project... infact, I've done a HD restoration - you could download it here (65MB); it's not perfect, but considering the source is not that bad... I'd like to replace the 2.0 soundtrack with the 5.1 remastered, that should be available onto the .vob file (inside the Dr. Gonzo restoration project); if someone could provide that file, I'll be really grateful!

@trp:

yes, the one I have is the triangle version. Thanks for the info about the other SDDS trailers; I searched a "bearable" versions of them for all night, but without results... telecined versions would be good enough for this project; do you have them?

Here you are some comparison images:

Top: DVD "a"; middle: laserdisc; bottom: DVD "b"

DVD "a" is NTSC interlaced 4:3; DVD "b" is NTSC progressive 16:9; laserdisc is the one I've cleaned up a bit to display better, but with no color correction.

The two DVD versions are effectively different, as DVD "a" miss the "this theater features" phrase on top of the "digital - dts - sound" at the end, present on both DVD "b" and laserdisc.

As you can see, DVD "a" has different shadows onto the "digital" letters; the color of "digital" is purple, similar between DVD "a" and laserdisc, while DVD "b" is blue... in second image, laserdisc "dts" is purplish, while the DVD are grey - I strongly suspect this is due to the fact that LD is a composite format, and color resolution is quite low...

Should I include the laserdisc version too? I am inclined to do so, because it could be considered the 4:3 version of DVD "b"!

Maybe I'll discover some other laserdisc trailers will be different "versions" of the same ones on DVD!

They are there! Along with a CHACE digital surround and DataSat trailer...

UPDATE: during my continuing research of trailers, I also download A LOT of duplicated titles, just in the hope of finding a better version (audio and/or video, or different video standard as most of them are only PAL or NTSC)...

I found a bunch of trailers with the same titles, but different size... "well, maybe the video quality is better" - I thought at the beginning, then I begun to download them... after many hours, my brain awake and told me: "stupid! these are VOB files from DVDs, and the size SHOULD be always the same... because the DD/DTS/THX trailer size are fixed..."

Me: "OK, brain, you should be allright, but now I finished to download them... let's give them a try before delete them, what do you think?"

Brain: "I concede you the honor to do it, but you know that, if the size is higher, and the video standard is the same, something is going wrong... maybe the one who has posted them has tried to 'fix' them as you do with your stupid laserdiscs... OK, waste your time, as usual, I'm going to sleep!"

So, I played one trailer, and the time is the same, the format is the same, the audio is the same... and the quality *seems* the same...

Me: "OK, let's try another one... it's the same..." and again, and again...

Brain: "Finished wasting your time? OK, now can you please check the files video and audio specs with Mediainfo?!?"

I followed brain's directions (as usual) and I discovered that the video bitrate/size/format etc. are the same, as the audio... "but, wait... all of them have also another soundtrack... what?!?... DTS!!!"

So, now I have to re-edit the first post with more than FORTY trailers that have both AC3 and DTS soundtracks!!!

Are you (forum users) happy as I am now!?! (^^,)

- AC3 (not DD) 7.1 channel test (NTSC 6ch, Japanese with CGI robot-speakers flying in space)
- Star Wars tunnel-run in CGI (probably not official from LucasFilm)

They seems REALLY interesting... could you please send me the link for both?

I added them to the first post, as "trailers to be added"... meanwhile, I discovered that the 20 missing trailers were only duplicates, so now I miss only your two ones, plus the laserdisc ones that I should capture as soon as I will have time - next week, sorry...

I must find the laserdiscs that have those trailers; any help will be really appreciated - just post the most famous action blockbuster around, and probably they are in my collection... the only problem will be to locate them! (^^,)

Thank you Moth3r, but I have it; it's "proper" name is "Sonic Landscape"... when (if) I will have time, I'd like to start a subdomain, with a small picture (or more than one) for each trailer, so one could know which one is which!

I just updated the trailer list; hope to find all the missing ones in some days!

spoRv presents the  **DD DTS THX [BD project]
**

**The ultimate Dolby, DTS, THX trailers collection - all in just one Blu-Ray disc!
**

Project mission: put all Dolby, DTS, THX trailers into one Blu-Ray disc!

Video sources: unaltered trailers taken from DVD and BD; only other sources could be upscaled.

Audio sources: unaltered trailers taken from DVD and BD; only other sources could be converted.

Further info: gathering all the Dolby, DTS, THX (and other) trailers on DVD and BD, and from different sources too; put them all in just one Blu-Ray disc; the digital sources will be left unaltered, the only allowed operation on DVD trailers will be demux .vob files and remux them into .m2ts files to let them BD compliant; different sources could be used, as digital captures of analog laserdisc, youtube videos, film print scans, but they must NOT be present in the same version on DVD or BD; then video could be upscaled and the audio could be converted, to be BD compliant; I’ll try to make a BD menu this time, but I could not promise it… (^^,)

Video info: DVD uses .vob files, MPEG2 encoded; NTSC DVDs are 704/720x480, 23.976 or 29.97fps; PAL DVDs are 704/720x576, 25fps; both could be 4:3 or 16:9; BD uses .m2ts files, AVC, MPEG2 or VC-1 encoded; BDs usually are 1280x720 or 1920x1080, 23.976 or 29.97 fps, 16:9, but could vary; other sources use different resolutions and compressions.

Audio info: DVD uses Dolby Digital and DTS; BD used Dolby Digital and DTS, often uncompressed (DD TrueHD and DTS-MA); other sources use different type of audio.

Help Wanted: Original 1993 DTS Trailer Preservation

@Jonno;

despite the fact that the DVD .vob you used has a better resolution, and you did a very good job in upscaling it, I don't like it because its "shaking", while the laserdisc version is rock solid; plus, it is "cropped" to 16:9, while the laserdisc is in "glorious" 4:3! (^^,) (^^,) (^^,)

Well, borisanddoris could choose the one who likes most, or add both to Jurassic Park!

Why laserdisc soundtracks are better...
Time

I remember the first time I heard a DTS soundtrack... it was "Independence Day" on laserdisc... I was blown away!

Another thing I remember, when I started to buy DVD (i was "forced" to do it, just because we had only 300 PAL italian titles to choose from) was the fact that AC3 5.1 soundtracks on DVDs, that all magazines of the time called "the definitive home theater experience", were infact weaker (a lot weaker) than the simples PCM italian soundtrack...

Obviously, there is NO definitive better soundtrack... it depends from mix type, mix quality, type of movie... when we watch a classic 1940's movie, we aspect a mono sountrack, while a modern 1990's action movie should "pump up the volume", possibly with a 5.1 soundtrack...

Why laserdisc soundtracks are better...
Time

I know now that most VHS commercial releases had Hi-Fi and linear tracks both in stereo... but, when I listen to Hi-Fi stereo tracks, the left and right tracks on the V-meters clearly shows different levels, while when I switch to linear tracks, the V-meters levels are always the same for both channels... and I have two S-VHS recorders!

I must admit I have very few VHS cassette left, and maybe the ones I have, have not stereo linear tracks, but I'm pretty sure, back in the days, that all the commercial VHS tapes I watched (both bought and rented) on the same recorders, have only mono linear tracks, and I watched A LOT...

Help Wanted: Original 1993 DTS Trailer Preservation
Time

When Jurassic Park debuted in 1993 in DTS, there was an attached DTS trailer that is very similar to the one we're used to from DVD, except that after the text and logo of "The Digital Experience" explodes, the pictures fades out.

I found your recreation clip on youtube...

I've been working on re-creating this for awhile so I can attach it to Jurassic Park.  So far, I've converted the audio from the DTS cinema discs of Jurassic Park and made a 5.1 DTSMA file.  I also made sure that it was set to sync with 23.97 video.

during my working on JP1 & JP2 extras, I have converted the laserdisc DTS "the digital experience" trailer to 1080p; as the original trailer was in 4:3 format, I left it as is, adding black bars on the sides, but this could be changed.

Here you are the link to the clip: SENDSPACE (40MB, 1080p, 23.976fps, DTS)

Quality is better than the DVD .vob files I've seen around; it's the long version, not the short one you posted on youtube.

The problem I'm having is that I am a total novice with video editing, only have iMovie, and the standard DVD dts trailer mpeg2 as a source.  If we can upscale the source, get the frame rate to match the audio, and add the fade, we'll be in business.

I could also do a 16:9 version, cropping the 4:3 one, and fade-out the video to follow the audio of your project, but I need your DTS-MA audio file... if you are interested, send me a P.M.

Info: THE ARRIVAL - Special Edition (seeking a team up) (lots of useful info)
Time

I found the italian DVD of "The Arrival": I discovered an interesting fact...

Top, movie clips from youtube, bottom italian PAL DVD: as you can see, the italian DVD is open matte! Following: 1.66:1 crop

Note the "white socks" of the alien; probably the feet weren't mean to be seen, but at least ankles could be "used" for the image, hence *maybe* the open matte could be cropped at 1.66:1, "earning" a good portion of top and bottom image, and loosing some lines at the sides... what do you think? Or the open matte version could be released as "extra", along the other laserdisc boxset ones...

During my researches about the DVD and BD of the movie, I found that BD has also a spanish soundtrack, and the DVD has a french soundtrack; as I like to release multi-language projects, if someone could provide the spanish and french soundtracks, I will use them along the italian one, and the laserdisc PCM and AC3 english soundtracks.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park [ruLes] - BD RELEASED
Time

IMPORTANT UPDATES:

audio:

As wrote before, I recaptured the NTSC DTS laserdisc, because its DTS soundtrack was faulty; this time, even if I used the same laserdisc player with the same connection, all is OK, and the DTS soundtrack ready for the BD version is perfect!

Don't know why, but the previous captures had some duplicate/missing frames, but virtualdub didn't recognize them as dropped frames... maybe was because one of my cats jumped onto the laserdisc player (more than once) during the capture... _,,,^..^,,,_

Well, right now the AC3 and DTS english, and PCM italian and french soundtracks are ready; I think I'll capture the PCM english soundtrack from the AC3 laserdisc, but don't know if it's worth the time to capture the mono soundtrack from the same disc, and/or the analog stereo soundtrack from the DTS laserdisc...

video:

as suggested by Papai, I've redone the clip #2 using the DTS NTSC video, captured at 720x480; this time the result is really better, take a look at the clip - SENDSPACE (40MB)

A picture is worth a thousand words, so...

original unprocessed captures, top NTSC, bottom PAL:

...restoration rule #37: "PAL is NOT always better than NTSC"...

Papai2013, you are now the official [ruLes] video quality tester!

Waiting for a confirmation that this time video is good enough, so I could start the (long) conversion.

Why laserdisc soundtracks are better...
Time

VHS Hi-Fi is stereo, 20-20.000Zz, 70dB S/N; it's as good as analog tracks on laserdisc, and it will be better than a heavy compressed AC3 soundtrack IMHO; at the contrary, VHS not Hi-Fi has a mono track, 100-10.000Hz, 42dB S/N, so it should be used only as the last resource...

Actually, I used VHS Hi-Fi stereo tracks for two projects, and the sound is very good indeed - not good as PCM CD/laserdisc soundtrack, but at least the original source is not compressed; the only problems are due to cracks and pops that could happen caused by the tape wear; if the VHS tape is unopened, not too old, and stored correctely it *could* happen that the audio is perfect, but it's not guaranteed... mine were bought brand new in 1995, played three or four times, then stored properly, but occasional crackle were unavoidable...

...where laserdisc tracks will not wear, and - when not affected by laser rot - will play as well after 30 years as when brand new!

The Lost World: Jurassic Park [ruLes] - BD RELEASED
Time

As JP1 DTS soundtrack was right - but done using a previous setup, as my HD was "accidentally formated" (oO_), I've done another conversion, just to see if my present software setup is faulty... but everything was OK, so... there is some faulty cables (I used the same optical one for both captures), or JP2 DTS laserdisc has some glitches, or the last time I used CLD-D925 to capture DTS (this last thing I don't remember clearly, as I've done so many captures for both JP1 and JP2...)

Tomorrow I'll capture again the DTS laserdiscs, using the D925 this time, or the 909 with a coaxial cable instead the optical one; I'll write here the conclusions (positive, I hope).
