Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm
Time

poita, reading your post reminded me when I bought the Pioneer HLD-X9 just to preserve Star Wars (long time before I knew this forum, and before I even think I could do something myself, technically speaking)... and now you did THIS?!? You crazy man! (^^,)

I'm feeling like a noob... I express myself for all of us: you are our HERO! Hope it will work, and you could do some preservations soon!

And about not eating for 6 months: just eat half the usual for 12 months...

Star Trek word for a new Enterprise alien race? (^^,)

Congratulations on getting another project out the door!

Thanks!

While I would have liked to have the theatrical DTS to satisfy my curiosity, I agree with your decision.

I'm also really curious, but I'm happy you agree with my decision.

DL'ing now.

Good luck! 21+ GB will take a LOOONG time... I'm trying to improve uploading speed using uTorrent... any hint is really appreciated!

So, what are you doing next?

So much ideas, so little time! P.M. me for more info.

Congrats on finishing this long project! I imagine it must have been frustrating at times.

Thanks! Infact, I'm a little disappointed (with myself) to have not finished the italian subtitles...

Take a break from the computer for some time, and enjoy a nice holiday in the lap of nature, countryside perhaps? You need it! It'll rejuvenate and refresh you.

If only I have time (and money) to do it...

Then you can come back and release the THX, Dolby and DTS logo trailers on the laserdiscs of JP and TLW:JP, and the high-res scans of the Laserdisc Cover arts of both.

Ah ha, at last! (^^,) OK, it will be made along with JP and TLW extras! I'll do a BD-50 project, "JP 1+2+extras", using the same files I uploaded for the movies, so if someone have downloaded the movies previously, it will be possible only to take the extras and keep the other files!

I don't know if it's because they're mts or the bit rates on some of them are high or what but on both THX trailers and a couple of the others, the video is only becoming viewable about half way in.

When I play them onto my PC with Media Player Classic, they start some seconds after I opened the files, but from the beginning; if I use VLC, they start almost immediately, but the audio is from the beginning, while video become visible after 8-10 seconds... the same for all my m2ts file - I'm sure it's not because the filetype, but because the m2ts file I use are AVC - H.264, "heavy" codec for oldest computers...

Your call but I would be inclined to just include official trailers and add your preferred test trailer at the start/end.

I think to add them in a proper section, "unofficial", along with the Star Wars one, after all the others... I also thought to start a thread, "post your unofficial/custom made DD DTS THX trailer"... what do you think?

Another unaccounted for trailer (and it's very doubtful you'll get it) is the DTS water drop trailer. Apparently it's very similar to Imagine Films' intro logo, and they took issue with it resulting in DTS pulling the trailer. Instead we got the Sonic Landscape trailer.

I'm aware of it, and also asked a person to scan the actual film print... still waiting his anwer...

Yes, I have received the DTS cinema files from JF, but I decided to not use them... even if the 5.0 channels are similar to the laserdisc ones, the 0.1 channel is overly active, as it is taken from the rear channels and filtered below 80Hz, while the laserdisc 0.1 is active when it must be, as it was designed as a proper low frequency channel... I preferred to use the laserdisc DTS soundtrack, it seems the logical choice to me, as its soundtrack is designed specifically for home theater use.

UPDATES:

I have released the BD version - is available right now on myspleen. Enjoy!

I would say that a private forum would be best, as it would also allow others to share bits that are needed to make full preservations possible.

I agree.. it will be cool to found a website devoted only to video preservation. I LOVE OT.com, but now that I started myself some preservation projects about non-SW movies, I'd like to have a place where sharing ideas, info, technical tips, audio/video/subs tracks...

I could use phpbb.com, but I am not tech savvy enough.

I am, and I have also a good domain to use... if someone is interested, please P.M. me - hope to be not too o.t. here...

The Lost World: Jurassic Park [ruLes] - BD RELEASED
Time

Sorry, I was busy lately... as I'd like to release it with the italian subs, I started to work at the literal subtitles myself... it's hard, I didn't remember how much is time consuming... today I reached 30%, and it was though... I told to myself: "Who cares? Let's release it with standard italian subs..." then brain suggested me... "Don't you remember that you searched a whole day WITHOUT finding it?"...

So, I'm stuck with it, I started the job (doing the italian subs) and I'll finish it... it will took some days, as to make, let's say, 10%, I worked for some hours... it's hard to listen to the lines, stop the movie, write down the lines, come back to the movie - five seconds earlies - to discover that I wrote something wrong, then stop again, back to the subs, make corrections, and again, and again...

But don't worry, JP2 project is still alive! As it is waiting the subs, I thought also to add the PCM soundtrack... it's not really needed, as it has both the AC3 and DTS soundtrack, but if someone feels that is really necessary...

I have both the laserdisc edition, normal and Special Edition box set, still shrinkwrapped....

It awaits a special occasion to be opened, like a preservation project... (^^,)

Maybe it's worth do use the laserdisc, for its extras and alternative ending, "as is", 1.85:1, and use the PAL DVD to do the "british feel" (?!?) 1.66:1...

As I wrote before in one thread of mine, I'd like to do these preservations, I have the skills now (or, at least I think I have them), the laserdiscs needed, the hardware (2nd best laserdisc player ever created, a quite good capture card, other hardware pieces that could come in handy if/when necessary like AC3 RF demodulator, excellent ADC to capture analog laserdisc soundtracks); the things I lack now are time (I devoted much time to my projects, still finishing JP2 and another one) and HDD space (all my HDDs are almost full)...

So, if you (and with you I intend the forum community) think I have the necessary skill, and are happy if I'll make these preservation projects, AND could wait (don't know how long... weeks? month? NOT years, this is for sure), please post into my thread, thanks!

Hope this thread remains as a guide for someone who's looking for the best version of a Disney animated feature, and that soon I could add one (or more) of my project to the list!

My suggestions?

Snow White.  While the restorations are pretty, they are that freaky rotoscope thing which they supposedly did in 1994!?  No laserdiscs were made before then.  AFAIK there are no releases that pre-date it except maybe some VHS.

Snow White - laserdisc box set - from the LDDB related page:

Box Set with feature presented in CAV on Side 1-4 with original full mono soundtrack on the left analog channel and music/effects only on the right track.

Disc 3 is a supplemental disc pressed by Technidisc presented in CLV/CAV format with separate right and left audio tracks presenting alternative information.

Side 5 in CLV contains a "Making of.." Documentary of the history of Snow White, storyboards, character concepts, pencil animation, etc. The featurette of the Premiere.

One of the audio tracks contain a radio interview with Cecil B Demille and Walt Disney talking about the production of Snow White. Other chapters contail deleted or proposed scenes, Radio Commercials

Side 6 in CAV contains a short biography and timeline of Walt Disney, Sbow White, the original Grimm text of Snow White, storyboards or scenes and abandoned scenes, Character design sketches, Deleted scenes both storyboard reconstructions and full animated scenes.

The box also includes a set of 10 Lithographs and a Hardback Book "The Making of a Classic".

Don't know if it has the rotoscope affair, but if they did that "improvement" in 1994, there is a chance they had no time to remaster the laserdisc with that "improvement"...

Only the extras worth a preservation...

Dumbo is a head scratcher.  There have been 3 DVDs, none are right, but someone with some advanced color correction skills could probably fix the 60th anniversary release.

I have the PAL UK laserdisc... don't know if it's better than the NTSC laserdiscs, but at least this is CAV and, if it's not a simple NTSC->PAL conversion, should have a better vertical resolution.

Cinderella was pretty much destroyed by the time it hit DVD.  The laserdisc isn't awful, it could just be better.

Cinderella - laserdisc box set - from the LDDB related page:

This is a Remastered Edition.

This Box Set contains:

Digital Tracks contain Restored Stereo Soundtrack
Analog Track One (Left): Original Mono Tracks
Analog Track Two (Right): Mono Music and Effects Track (Restored) also known as an M&E
Second disc contains "The Making of A Masterpiece", 2 sides, CLV/CAV, 45 chapters
43 page hard bound book" The Storybook and The Making of a Masterpiece"
    Lithograph of Animation Art

Probably "This is a Remastered Edition" is not a good thing as we thought in past times... but with all these extras, a preservation will be interesting!

Beauty and the Beast... yeah, probably important.  The problem when you get this modern is that it would be best synced to the BD restored audio track, not whatever is on the film.

Beauty and the Beast - laserdisc - from the LDDB related page:

26 minutes of supplemental material -- an Insiders look at "The Making of Beauty and the Beast".

CAV, letterbox, surround, plus extras...

Beauty and the Beast: Work in progress LD - from the LDDB related page:

Side 4 has 17 minutes of supplemental material including alternate versions of "Be Our Guest," camera test for the Ballroom scene, information on the technollogy used to create this film, Pencil tests, and Theatrical Trailer.

Interior gatefold includes liner notes on the production and stages of animation.

It will be interesting to make a preservation project using these two laserdiscs, and maybe add also Beauty and the Beast: Enchanted Christmas as bonus... (I know the last one is not a masterpiece, but adding it will make the BATB project complete)

The Lion King suffered serious reanimation of scenes, possibly worse than BatB ever did.  Someone would need to do a LDrip for that otherwise.

The Lion King - laserdisc box set - from the LDDB related page:

A wonderfully packaged box set loaded with special features: audio commentary, making-of documentary, storyboards, artwork, animation layouts, and much more. Included in the box is a portfolio of six concept art lithographs that are not as exciting as one might hope, but are nice to have nonetheless.

add to that a Dolby Digital soundtrack, and it could be a really interesting project to do.

Of course there is the question, what versions of Fantasia exist.

I have these ones:

Fantasia CAV laserdisc (no extras); and

Fantasia - laserdisc box set - from the LDDB related page:

Special Edition Box Set includes supplemental "Making of a Masterpiece" on Side 6, special lithographs, and other supplemental printed materials.

Only available version with the original Deems Taylor dialogue (in this case, the 120-minute 50th Anniversary re-release based on the 1947 General Release Version).
The Dolby Surround mix on the digital tracks is not mono compatible (it is suitable for surround or stereo playback only). For mono playback select the analog tracks (this mix is mono compatible). Analog sound is Stereo for Music, but Mono for Dialog.

It will be exciting to capture also the analog soundtrack...

While Aladdin has been poked and prodded in the audio department, I've seen screenshots of the EU Blu-ray and it looks pretty much identical to the old DVD.

I have this one: Aladdin CAV laserdisc

What about an Aladdin Trilogy? Adding Aladdin and the king of thieves and The return of Jafar...

Better audio on the ones I didn't like makes it a closer call, eg c. Matrix City is better but for me d. Linked Spheres still edges it as my favourite.

Thanks for the review!

As for the THX trailers, I'm not sure. Are they 'proper' trailers? How many versions of Broadway are there?! I don't like the Jurassic Park trailer - the dialogue/roar over the Broadway noise doesn't work - it's just grating.

They are not official trailers, I've done it. The first, Broadway 2013, is just an homage to the classic Broadway found on laserdisc, done for THX's 30 years; I've done the second after I did the first and then I saw the "Bounty" official THX trailer... I'm not satisfied myself for the audio - I'm a complete noob at audio editing - but what about video?

Intro for compilation..??

these are test "trailers" I'd like to use for this project, as well as others... I think to put one of them at the beginning, or after the end, of restoration projects.

I made five different trailers just for fun! I like best "a", and also "d" is interesting; I'm happy you spent some of your times to review them.

I changed a bit the music and effects, and uploaded at 720p - if you want to take a look at these versions, you'll find that they have a better audio/video quality.

Here you are the tentative names of the trailers, with the download links:

a = FALLING PEOPLE (download)

b = WHITE CORRIDOR (download)

c = MATRIX CITY (download)

d = LINKED SPHERES (download)

e = RUNNING LINES (download)

UPDATE:

As I supposed, the Dolby Digital trailers on laserdiscs ARE different than the ones on DVDs: apart the same versions, there are also some "Dolby Surround AC3 Digital" instead the usual "Dolby Digital" logo at the end.

Also, the THX Broadway logo exists in different versions... while the video is the same, apart duration, audio soundtracks are different in duration, pitch and volume increasing - I captured and converted at least four different versions: PAL PCM, NTSC AC3, NTSC PCM, NTSC DDEX.

@Jonno:

this is the "Dolby Fanfare" trailer; I downloaded it, but as you pointed out, it was jerky and I deleted it... THANK YOU very much for your fixing!

Dolby Stereo and SR are very welcome - even if they are 480p, if they are different from the ones I have, I'll use them anyway.

@digitalfreaknyc:

yes, please, take a look and let me know if something is missing.

UPDATE:

I found "Curious George Dolby Digital" trailer, but the quality is awful... I'd prefer to use a better version - if someone has it, please post the link.

OT:

if someone is "Curious as George" enough to download these trailers (9MB all), then post some comments here...

@_,,,^..^,,,: What was censored in The Fox and the Hound?

This is only an hypotesis... as some other Disney classics were "restored", maybe also Rox&Roury (the french title of The Fox and The Hound" is the "improved" version... to be sure, it must be captured and compared scene by scene with the DVD... and I'm sorry I have not it, so I couldn't do the comparison (yet)!

I would think DNR is applied to the the source.  I don't believe mpeg2 compression can cause ghosting.

I wrongly explained myself, sorry... what I wanted to mean is that maybe the DNR is applied to the source used for the DVD, so the laserdisc *could* be DNR free.

I have the french PAL laserdisc of Fox and the Hound, that was never released on laserdisc in the US... I guess if this version is the same of US DVD/BD, or could be uncensored...

The Pinocchio Box Set laserdisc should not show any ghosting artifacts due to digital noise reduction, if this probem is not in the master but only due to DVD compression...

Laserdisc cleanliness
Time

AntcuFaalb said:

A cleaning can't hurt (see below), but LDs aren't anywhere near as sensitive as CDs and DVDs are when it comes to surface cleanliness.

If you do choose to clean 'em, I suggest using Novus #1 Plastic Polish and a good microfiber cloth. Also, consider using Novus #2 to buff-out scratches.

I agree! Consider that laserdisc has analog video, and no error correction like CD/DVD/BD, so even a really tiny dust particle (<1μm) inside the layers could show up as black dots or lines.

Jonno, thanks for the file; I don't think this could be useful for upscaling, as, AFAIK, the original file was encoded in mp4 or Sorenson3, so upscale a 2nd generation lossy video is not a good idea... I think I'll stick with my version - yet not perfect, but watchable.

About 5.1: I'm sure someone has recreated the audio from the 2.0 soundtrack, and I've contacted a person that maybe could have that 5.1 audio... I'll post here if I'll receive it.

UPDATES:

here you are the latest trailers found or converted:

  • THX (unofficial) - Star Wars (upscaled to HD)
  • THX - BROADWAY - LASERDISC - NTSC PCM
  • THX - CIMARRON - LASERDISC - NTSC DTS
  • THX - Speaker Array
  • THX - Lincoln Car Audio Demo
  • DOLBY - Dolby Atmos Theatrical Trailer
  • Other - DATASAT Digital Entertainment

soon I'll update first post adding the following and dividing trailers in categories.
