Escape From New York [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

Oldfan, Matt, thanks for the feedbacks!

Both commentaries are taken from DVD, untouched; I was sure that the first one was the same of the laserdisc, but if it's true that something was cut for the DVD version, then I could think about to capture the laserdisc one next time...

For BD playback issues, I opened a dedicated thread, to gather all comments and try to find out a solution; please post your BD feedback there, thanks!

Info: THE ARRIVAL - Special Edition (seeking a team up) (lots of useful info)
Time

As I still have no news about an eventual HDTV, I'm starting to think there isn't one available; so I checked the BD against the DVD in the caps-a-holic site: it is not a total mess... yes, it's DNRed - more than a bit, and grain is gone, but many fine details are still there... not as much as they should, but enough to say it's better than the DVD.

At this point, I don't think a laserdisc preservation of the whole movie - even using the X9 as player - can be better than this... of course, it will useful for the alternate ending.

So, just for joke, I applied a grain plate over one of the screenshots, to improve perceived resolution, and here you are the result:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/60531

not a huge improvement, but a bit better IMHO... opinions?

Plus, the BD seems to need contrast & brightness tweaks, and maybe a saturation too, so these will be taken in account in an eventual preservation project.

Halloween [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

As some users have problems with the burned BD of EFNY, I ask to every user here that burned Halloween on a BD disc and watched it to a standalone player to help me to know if this project (Halloween) works well.

So, please post your OS, your BD software, the BD player(s) used (or PS3), and if the disc worked flawlessy or not, and if not, which are the issues.

Many thanks to all, your collaboration is important for my future projects!

I'm sorry about that, and I'm aware people will be fearful to download further releases because that...

But, before EFNY, I had only one complaint about a not working disc - and, IIRC, was due to download problems... for EFNY, I burned a BD-R and a BD-RE, tested both with two different PS3 models without problems... I was pretty sure it will work with most standalone BD players, but this is not the case... HOW could I know that in advance?

I asked for help in the technical forum; hope someone will help me, because I don't figure out how to solve this myself... before using MultiAVCHD, I read many forums and they said most standalone players were compatible, but this seems not to be the case here...

So, maybe is not MultiAVCHD; maybe it's the x264 encoding, maybe the 4.1 profile, maybe the TSmuxer not compliant - used by multiavchd... DON'T KNOW!!!
Another chance to help me, is to test Halloween, as it was made using EasyBD lite; if it will work, at least I know that software works... I'm posting a request in the proper threads. Please, let's continue the discussion about the disc compatibility issue in the thread I opened, thanks!

Jonno, I added the MGM logo as I didn't want to touch the english soundtrack from BD and german soundtrack from LD; also, if someone with other BD soundtracks that would like to put them in sync, will have no problems.

I thought to add black frames to put HDTV in sync with BD, but I tested it and it was sad so hear the lion roars without seeing him...

Latest motivation: think about my avatars, and you'll understand... (^^,)

But, if it's a problem, the day I will solve the BD "affair", I can always change that!

About BD compatibility: I have no idea why it doesn't work properly, as in my two PS3 it works flawlessy - maybe it is more forgiving than a standalone BD player... I also opened a thread to seek help to find out how to solve this!

EDIT: forgot to mention: also tested with success with another PS3 of a friend of mine.

BD authoring help - I need some testers and experts
Time

My last EFNY BD-25 has some compatibility problems; I used MultiAVCHD as BD authoring software, and ImgBurn to actually burn the BD-25 disc; I tested it with my PS3 - two different models - and it worked flawlessly, but other users had problems with their standalone BD players.

So, i need some volunteer who can burn a BD-R or a BD-RE and test it on their standalone BD player, reporting eventual problems; also, if some experts would like to give a look at the files/folder, maybe they will discover if there is anything wrong with them.

You could burn the whole movie - you know where to find it - or just download the BD "template" - the same, only with dummy empty files for movie and trailer - here (24MB) - in the latter case, please avoid to sacrifice a BD-R just to throw it away after the test... just use a BD-RE that you will reuse for something useful in the future!

Thanks in advance!

Idea: "Eye Candy" demo collection - any interest in this?
Time

I’m wondering if someone could be interested in a project that will gather all the so-called “eye candy” demo clips that could be seen in almost all electronic shops that sell HDTVs…

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, let’s visit this site.

As those are discs not for sale, it’s very hard to find out; my project idea is to take those clips - excluding movie trailers, music video clips, sport clips, leaving only proper demos and adding hi-tech related technical clips - and make theme-based BD discs; for example nature, cities, art etc.

I have them all, plus many others, in particular from satellite - you know, those interesting looped videos that could be seen before a sat channel started their programs, or during the night; plus, nowadays it’s common to find them on USB keys, but it’s really difficult to find out them, more than the demo BDs…

I’m aware that exist one similar collection on AVCHD, but it’s forced to have low bitrate, to be compatible with the standard, while I will use (whenever possible) untouched files.

This is only a thread to gather interest in this project, as if it will see the day of light, will be a HUGE collection, and will be a work-in-progress for a long time - until 4K will be definitely on every home… at that time, the 4K demo will be common and the cycle will start again… (^^,)

So, any ideas, comments, opinions and… files are welcome!

Time

Matt, sorry to hear that...

About size: all the files/folders are 24.235.994.552 bytes - well under the 25.000.000.000 bytes of a BD-25, and I had no problems burning it with ImgBurn on Windows XP; I used UDF 2.50; maybe another UDF profile should be used?

Don't know, for "The Thing" I made the BD, without menus, using TSMuxer; for "Halloween", again without menus, I used EasyBD lite... any other feedback?

If someone is aware of a free BD authoring software (apart MultiAVCHD) that support menu, please let me know - infact, all the [spoRv] projects used only free software!

To whom it may test and/or analize it: is it possible to test the EFNY BD-25 without downloading all the movie - so only the introduction logo and animated menus, BD structure and dummy files for movie and trailer - here (24MB). Any help to find out what is wrong will be REALLY appreciated, and I'm sure will be helpful also for other fan editors.

Info: Our projects released thread
Time

D_J, what about "The Arrival" HD? Is the alternate ending available, too? I was thinking to start a project using LD as source (as probably even that could be better than the retail BD) but if you could obtain an HDTV version of it, oh well, it will be definitely way better than uspcaled LD - of course!

But, LD's soundtracks - and extra features, including the alternate ending - could be a nice addition to the project; let me know if you need audio/video captures and/or some help.

Lord of the Rings EE BD trilogy - few questions
Time

I was pretty sure about it, but I need a confirmation; thanks!

I thought to do a color regrading of the FOTS using DVD as color reference, and leave the others as they are - if the don't need some adjustment, but I don't think so; only, as there are some empty space in each BD-50 - up to 10/11GB in some, IIRC - I thought to add those five soundtracks to fill that space...

Good or bad idea?

Thanks for the info. Trailer was a bonus, and I put it in the disc at the last minute; it will play right after the credits, as a "gift" to whom has waited until the very end... (^^,)

As MultiAVCHD allow only 6 soundtracks and 5 subtitles (+ no sub option), is it possible to select the other soundtracks/commentaries only directly during the vision of the movie... I tried to add more than 6 soundtracks in the menu, without luck. If someone is aware of a trick to do it, please let me know.

About 4.1 profile: don't know if it could be the problem, but into my two PS3 (different models) it works flawlessy - chapters, ff, rw etc. - if you have a spare BD-R to "sacrifice", you could try to use TSmuxer or another software to change each file's profile from 4.1 to 4.0, burn again and see if it works or not.

And, thanks for your positive feedback: an "old, bad, low bitrate MPEG-2" (^^,) turned out to be really good as video source for this project!

Lord of the Rings EE BD trilogy - few questions
Time

FOTR has a different color grading in comparison to the EE DVD; what about the other two movies?

I'd like to know the bitrate of the DTS HD-MA soundtracks, where available, or the best alternative, for all the three EE movies in the following languages:

  • english (should be 4718kbps IIRC)
  • french
  • german
  • italian
  • spanish

Also, italian soundtrack has the wrong pitch... while the 25fps PAL DVD has (strangely) the correct pitch, when they ported it to 23.976fps they corrected the corrected one, so final result is wrong... any advice about this problem in one of the other languages - apart english, that should not be affected I think?

Thanks in advance!

I'd like to know if the BD-25 is working well - in particular the animated menu.

So, please, post your BD brand and model, and if it works or not.

Also, a brief review will be really appreciated, not only about the preservation itself, but also about the BD authoring, as this is my first attempt to make a BD-25 compliant disc with menus...

Thank you very much!
