Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *)
Time

I still think about this project - even if it would be an epic work, indeed!

Yes, I worked on some other projects, mostly because they were almost finished, and missed just the final touches.

I must admit I worked on this project, too, here and there… for example, I’ve tried to remove the timecode from EP7 deleted scenes, with not that great results; or tried to clean up EP4 deleted scenes, also without not much success… I’m aware someone has done this, with good results, and it will be great to use those restored scenes.

Also, I struggle to achieve a minimum quality for the B&W colorization. I know someone would not care to see those inserted in B&W, but I do.

[AUDIOPHILES UNITE!] Need help with audio cassette setup
Time

Nakamichi were known to be the best tape deck in the world. Period.
If you can find out one at a good price, with the head not worned out, grab it!
If not (it is likely), I do remember that Teac did very good decks as well; aim for the higher models, of course.
If your tapes are original, they most probably have Dolby B; best 80s deck have also Dolby C, and even Dolby S (rarely DBX, too); they should be turned on only with tapes recorded with the same kind of noise reduction to get the best result, even if there was one that would be beneficial also with tapes recorded without NR - can’t remember which one, you must do your homeworks here! 😃

Info: Archiving Star Wars 1997 Special Edition laser discs...
Time

the colours seem slightly off; blacks are more grey

Try to adjust the levels in Virtualdub; the best would be to use a proper calibration disc, or at least a test pattern; if you haven’t one of them, find out a black frame, then a white frame, and adjust levels accordingly to reach the “borders” of the histogram.

Some info on analog capture: https://forum.fanres.com/thread-933.html

Even if I encourage you to continue your mission, you should be aware that laserdisc (as much as I love it, and I DO love it, a lot!) is not the best version available; waiting for 35mm preservation (that would be the best), you can find out SDTV captures that are better - GKar and TB for all the three episodes IV, V, VI.

Best LaserDisc Player for capturing?
Time

If you can afford an X0, go for it. NOW! 😄

If you can grab instead an X9, I think it’s the best of the bunch, better than HLD-1000; then S9.

S1 was a reference player (can’t say if it’s better than the previous models), but if you can find an S2/X1, it should be a lot better, though.

I’d go to the LDDB forum and ask for help, there are many experts that could help you.

The Keep (1983) - 35mm Preservation Scan Opportunity (Released)
Time

Necroupdate and slightly off topic, but thought maybe someone still subscribed to this thread may be interested…

Just released a fan restoration project; used the 1080i HDTV source provided by ShaneLSD (THANKS A LOT!); regraded using DVD as color reference (hence now no more magenta blanket) and slapped a 35mm film grain plate over it, slowed down to proper 23.976fps, got the usual five audio and subs languages tracks, plus the restored soundtrack, all as a BD-25 - indeed, around 12GB, as it’s very soft, and 16mbps average video bitrate retain all the details and grain.

Have fun!

CABAL (Alternate extended cut of Nightbreed) (Released)
Time

Just finished to watch “Nightbreed - The Cabal Cut” retail version. Some considerations:

  • of 12 minutes added, I think about 9/10 are very good quality, probably they used the deletes scenes; still, no color correction
  • the rest has an awful quality - VHS “as is” including noise and drop-outs; the shots which originally had timecodes, were cut on the bottom, and a black box is placed over the top timecode… and almost all could be dropped, as most shots were mere fillers.

So, I think this project still have a reason to be finished, maybe using the good parts of this retail version as source.

Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *)

Looking for an 8TB now, picking the best price… cost would be the same in Italy or Germany, more or less. I’m slowly making order in my electronic gears, and that HDD isn’t on top of the list, but it will be bought soon - I must also admit one member said he wanted to donate one drive, so let’s wait few days for it, who knows! 😄

oh ok, so you don’t use RG or UL on ncrypt for example

“Oh no, I must live with the fact ilyasdesign40 didn’t get my project…”

Not only I worked a lot, for free, but I also MUST upload my project on a preferred place, with preferred method, following a newbie, never-did-something-for-the-community-apart-vomit-bad-things-and-askinkg-everything-on-the-whole-forum request?

Well, this is the kind of people that let me think to stop making projects right now… don’t want to be banned to have answered you in a way you deserve, so I stop here.

Please DO NOT POST ANYMORE in any of my threads, thanks.
