Info: Are HDTV versions better than Blu-ray?
Time

I noted some projects are using HDTV as main sources, so I guess if the various HDTV versions could be better than Blu-ray, quality wise… if so, which ones? There are so many around…

Yesterday I found two HDTV versions of EP IV in an old hdd, one is “NTSC” 29,97fps 1920x1080 MPEG2, the other is “PAL” 25fps 1920x1088 AVC; I cleaned them a bit, overlaid them to average noise, added a grain plate and tried to regrade the resulting mix using my PAL GOUT DVD as color reference. Sadly, the “PAL” version was corrupted, that’s why images are only from the first ten minutes or so…

Here you are the screenshots comparisons:

Also, I made a small clip (10mbps AVC, no sound, about 1 minute) just to watch the color grading in motion - it misses the denoising, but has the grain plate, even if at that bitrate I think it’s not clearly visible:

Don’t know if this needs to be converted in a “real” project, because there are so many ready projects, plus many interesting ones in progress - and I’m sure that if I’ll start it, the day before the release Disney will announce its OUT version… but feedbacks are welcome and very useful, as the filters used here could be used also for other projects.

Thanks a lot to everyone!

Thanks DrDre!

They are very similar; I continue to prefer SR eyes and MU mouth! (^^,)

Back to DVD upscale: it seems I forgot to post this comparison...

Info: I can do a fan restoration / preservation / edit of any film you want...
Time

First: Army of Darkness should wait (at least until I will finish my current unfinished projects... it means A LOT of time, sorry...)

Second: as you asked for this here, and into another forum, and I answered there, I think there is no reason to answer here, too, as the answer will be the same... (here: http://tehparadox.com/forum/f89/halloween-%5Bsporv%5D-*bd-25*-8373159/#post16895422 - and I don't think that could exist another jedimaster-someSWcharacter who is interested in palms...)

Third: have you ever think to follow the links in my signature? There you could find some of the future project I would like to do...

Fourt: re-read (or read) this post - it's just two post over this, but maybe it's better to refresh your mind -> http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/I-can-do-a-fan-restoration-preservation-edit-of-any-film-you-want/post/760732/#TopicPost760732

have a nice day!

jedimasterobiwan, I can't resist... (^^,)

my 2c: I admit that (most of) the titles you are speaking about may worth a fan preservation / restoration, but you can't ask everyone to make a project... we have our lives, and (here I speak for myself but think many will be in the same conditions) a LOT of unfinished projects to do... BUT... you could always post something like "(title of the movie here) has a wrong color grading/aspect ratio/noise reduction etc." explaining in details, possibly with links and images, your point... THEN, if someone thinks it could be an interesting project to make, he/she will chime in to show his/her interest...

Guys, I won 1 Million € at lotto, so now I’m rich, and because soon I will have a lot of money, I’m going to buy a super computer, the fastest available, plenty of RAM, biggest HDDs, best audio, video, capture cards, with Sony Blu-print BD authoring software, several BD burners, and a bunch of M-Disc BD-Rs; and, with a lot of free time, and nothing in program for the next months, I’m going to do any fan restoration / preservation / edit of a film of your choice (that of course is in need of such project) and I’ll send the final project on BD-R (because here the internet connection speed is slow…) to any person who have a good proposal; of course, with a new computer, that will do a complete encoding in few hours, and because I’ll use the fastest courier, expect the disc to be in your house in less than a week - probably three or four days.

Waiting for your proposals!

Thanks to April E. Pesced for this splendid idea!

DrDre, MagicUp is my own upscaling script; I agree that SuperResolution retains more details, but when compressed at mid/low bitrate, probably they will be lost... plus, even if softer, MagicUp do a good job at the edges - look at the chin and teeth...

I'm curious to test both at given bitrates... I'll do it later today!
