Didn't know there was a PAL LD of this.

AFAIR, the PAL version quality is lower than the Japanese LD... and, to wipe out subtitles, a PAL VHS tape is needed!

@AntcuFaalb: don't know if Jetrell will be able to capture the NTSC tape lossless; if not, would you (*gulp*) dare to open your own brand new unopened unshrinkwrapped tape, and capture it lossless?

Time to resurrect this thread... launch status check:

- Hi-end laserdisc player?
- Go!

- High-quality analog capture card?
- Go!

- High-quality cables?
- Go!

- High-quality capture hardware & software?
- Go!

- "From Star Wars to Jedi" NTSC Japanese laserdisc?
- Go!

- "From Star Wars to Jedi" NTSC US VHS tape?
- No go! I repeat, no go!!!

...at least, until Jetrell Fo will provide the latter, to get rid of the Japanese hardsubs... interested? Stay tuned on this thread!

I think you should use the PAL DVD for ROTJ - at least, according to anyone in this forum, this is better than NTSC!

Is this a title suitable for the PaNup technique (plus SR processing)?

Nope, as the PAL version is actually a bad NTSC conversion...

But Moth3r and others have said it's only SLIGHTLY better than it's NTSC counterpart.

Yep, but slightly better is always better than equal... plus, it has (obviously) more lines to work with, so...

It has something to do with masters used and/or NTSC/PAL conversion... can't remember, but if you are interested, you must do a little google-fu to search in older thread here...

Yes, theoretically PAL should be superior, BUT... theory and practice are not always the same... indeed, even if there are around 5000 PAL laserdisc, only few ones are better than their NTSC counterparts - using similar quality players, of course...

Disclaimer: I'm using an old 1024x768 half-optimized lcd monitor, so take this in account when evaluating my feedback!

OK, just finished to watch it... apart the "usual suspects" - read: jagged lines on the droids around frames 4500/4600, which needs IMHO more aggressive antialiasing - the rest was very good; yes, tiny jaggies are still here and there, but I noted them because I watched the clip to find'em all! (^^,)

From here - apart the few instances where there are clearly jagged lines that could be solved applying further antialiasing - you have the green light! Go for it!

althor, finished to download the test clip - if you can call it a "test clip" a 1GB file... (^^,) - and it's quite good; a bit too bright, but maybe it's the disc itself...

Meanwhile, thanks to the capture fever that hit me, I managed to grab the same frame you posted before, this:

US HLD-X0 Vs US CLD-R7G
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129269

and this is the results:

US HLD-X0 Vs US HLD-X9
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129450

US HLD-X0 Vs JP HLD-X9
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129452

US CLD-R7G Vs US HLD-X9
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129451

US CLD-R7G Vs JP HLD-X9
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129453

I used both the US Definitive Collection (0693-84) Japanese Definitive Collection (second edition, the one without book but with documentaries -> PIL-2021) because this is the latest version and is supposed to have a better video.

Hardware used: Pioneer HLD-X9 via S-Video Monster Cable to SweetSpot (a.k.a. PDI Deluxe)

Software used: VirtualDub with HuffYUV 2.2 codec; settings for JP: http://s11.postimg.org/d834rlmlv/SW_DC_JP_settings.jpg (for US, contrast was lowered to 95 and of course NTSC was used instead NTSC-J)

Extras on SW laserdiscs and not on DVD or BD...
Time

UPDATE: Finally I captured the 1997 SE NTSC three trailers and featurette, using the Pioneer HLD-X9 and the SweetSpot (a.ka. PDI Deluxe) capture card; better late than never! (^^,)

Also discovered that the NTSC is around 29min, while the German and UK are around 15min - it seems they are just cut down versions of the US, so, I don't know if I "have" to capture them or not...
