Rogue One - Extra Extended Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

Moved links to post #1; added available movie clip list to post #2.

Sidenote: if the available movie clips are reflecting the final color grading that will be present on future BD (UHDBD/DVD) releases (very likely, indeed), then I must say that it is probably not the same seen in theaters…

Left, movie clip untouched; right, regraded using workprint as reference:

Now, it is always possible that the workprint has wrong colors, but I do seem to remember they are quite the same seen on the big screen, and you?

Rogue One crawl
Time

Thanks for your crawl, I added them in the first post.

ray_afraid: some words are carefully chosen to let the text sound important and not “usual”; I do not agree that all of them could be easily understood by any given young child - told by me, an Italian who think that even in “Guerre Stellari” crawl (and dialog as well) there are “difficult” words for younger audience.

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

Don’t know if someone has noted (and posted) this before, but there is a chance Chirrut was a Jedi once - and somehow he has not the power of the Force anymore (maybe because to an accident which made him blind, or he made a sort of “vote” as monk… who knows?); if not, how could a normal blind human being (apart Daredevil) do the sort of things he does, and, why the handle of his wood stick is dangerously similar to a lightsaber (that isn’t working anymore, but he still put it on some use)?

just a speculation, I know…

Rogue One crawl
Time

Warning: contains a major spoiler - read at your own risk…

OK, after the announcement, we all know that Rogue One has sadly no crawl… but, as many of us think, it could always possible to use a fan made one, to make a fan edit, or just for the sake of playing it; there are many one readily available on youtube, but who can tell which is the best?

Because it’s not possible to make a poll here, I would like to know your opinions of the following crawls, and if you have found a new one, or wrote one yourself, please post it in the comment; I’ll add the best (read: the voted one) in this first post.

Rules:

  • if you like an existing crawl, just write “I like” following by one or more crawl number, in descending order
  • if you want to add a new crawl, check if it is in line with the previous movies language first, then add a cumulative number to it

I think that “A Star Wars story” should replace the “Episode #” line, followed by the title, instead of using just the title.

Without further ado, here you are

The possible Rogue One crawls:

  • Crawl #1

The Jedi are all but extinct, the Republic has fallen and in their wake, the Galactic Empire has engulfed the far reaches of the galaxy in fear.
Persecuted members of the Old Republic have been thrust into hiding. Only members of the REBEL ALLIANCE dare take a stand against the ruthless Imperial forces.
Deep in the Outer Rim territories, the dastardly Director Krennic has discovered the location of a long lost friend; one capable of completing the Empire’s most powerful weapon yet…

    (source: http://screenrant.com/star-wars-text-crawl-rogue-one-fan)

  • Crawl #2

The Galactic Empire has risen. Chancellor Palpatine has declared himself Emperor and, with the one-time Jedi Knight known as Darth Vader at his side, has set about creating a planet-destroying weapon.
With the Jedi presumably extinct, a newly formed REBEL ALLIANCE, led by Mon Mothma, is holding on to the last vestige of hope.
To crush that faith, the Empire has sent their director of Advanced Weapons Research to a remote planet to track down a scientist who is the final key to completing their Death Star…

  • Crawl #3

The once prosperous Republic has crumbled under the sinister rule of the Galactic Empire. Suffering countless losses, a brave REBELLION faces a battle at every turn.
Unbeknownst to the Rebels, an unseen threat looms over the galaxy. Once revealed, this new evil will strike fear in all that oppose the Empire.
With little time to spare, Mon Mothma, leader of the Rebellion, pleads her cause to the Imperial Senate in the hope that more star systems will join in their fight for freedom…

  • Crawl #4 (revised by the author)
The Jedi are all but extinct, the Republic has crumbled, and the Galactic Empire’s terrible reign falls like a shadow across the stars.
Daring to oppose the imperial battalions, a bold REBEL ALLIANCE seeks to unite planets against the Empire. Division is rife, and conflict threatens to engulf the galaxy.
Meanwhile, deep in the Outer Rim, the ruthless Director Krennic has discovered the location of an old ally - one who holds the key to securing the Empire’s terrifying rule…

    topdawg193

  • Crawl #5

It is a time of galactic tyranny. The once venerable democracy has fallen to a despotic Empire, which subjugates the star systems of the defeated Old Republic.
A few brave souls dare to defy this oppressive regime, and whisper of forming a strong REBEL ALLIANCE, now their only hope against the relentless Imperial machine.
With the resistance still fractured and in disarray, the Empire moves swiftly to complete its ultimate weapon, one that will spell destruction and death across the stars…

    NeverarGreat

  • Crawl #6

The Jedi are all but extinct, the Senate is crumbling and in their wake, the Galactic Empire has engulfed the far reaches of the galaxy in fear by command of the EMPEROR.
A sinister Imperial plot to persecute members of the Republic have thrust them into hiding. Only members of the secret REBEL ALLIANCE dare make a stand against the ruthless Imperial regime.
As the shadows of the Empire loom ever larger across the galaxy, so do deeply troubling rumors. Deep in Empire-dominated space, it is said a machine of unimaginable destructive power is nearing completion. A weapon too terrifying to contemplate and a threat that may be too great to overcome…

P.S. even if I put four dots at the end of the last paragraph, the forum software continues to replace them with a three-dots-one-character… so, consider them all four-dots, as Lucasfilm alwasy did!

Rogue One - Extra Extended Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

I scrolled down, yes, but it “seems” I have all of them.

UPDATE

  • Found some high bitrate versions of trailers I had before; so now I got them in better quality! If you know of some 1080p high bitrate clip, please let me know!
  • For testing purposes, I put back three original shots in the workprint; they stick out like a sore thumb (of course) but it helped me to find a simple way to include them in the main movie, waiting to replace the ugly workprint with a proper BD/UHDBD source.
  • Still watching and rewatching the trailers, and every time I find a new shot that I had not noticed before - sometimes just few frames long; it will be a looong project, I suspect! 😉

any video?

Restoring the video at desired level of quality (not perfect of course, impossible to achieve with an automated filter, but very good) take a looong time… the encoding speed is 0.01fps!!!

So, waiting for the new PC to work on cleaning. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for an answer from a member who could help with the project. It will be done, don’t worry; even if I don’t actually work on this, my mind thinks always about it: “where do I put this one? how can improve that other?” and so on… 😄

Random thoughts, facts and factoids about Rogue One (I’ll append new ones at the end every time I find something interesting):

  • A teaser trailer of Star Wars Rogue One was shown off at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, in 2015. It showed a TIE fighter flying above a forest planet and then revealed the Death Star. There is a voice over from Obi-Wan Kenobi that says: “For more than a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire.”; there is only a bootleg version around, very bad quality, taken probably with a phone camera; I guess if there is a proper one somewhere…
  • According to a post found in a french forum, there are at least 30 minutes of Darth Vader deleted scenes.
  • It seems there is so many unused footage filmed and unused for the final movie, that is possible to make another one!
  • There is an after credit shot on youtube; a mouse-droid-visual of a corridor, and a lightsaber; according to many, it is just a fake.
  • Many shots in the various trailers, apart obvious ones not in the movie, are just different takes, some really slight; others are reversed.
  • List of available movie clips:
    Call Sign (00:31) - 1080p 29.97fps
    Come Back (00:23) - 1080p 29.97fps
    Chance of Failure (00:40) - 1080p 23.976fps high bitrate
    Jyn is Rescued (00:48) - 1080p 23.976fps high bitrate
Jyn Rallies The Rebel Alliance (00:21) - 1080p 23.976fps high bitrate
Trust Goes Both Ways (00:48) - 1080p 23.976fps high bitrate
    Jyn, Cassian and K-2SO in Jedha City (00:40) - 720p 59.94fps (from a show)
Jyn, Cassian and K-2SO in Jedha desert (00:18) - 1080p 29.97fps (bits & pieces, no usable audio, from SW Celebration 2016)
for a total of about four and half minutes.

Rogue One - Extra Extended Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

Mission: to add every deleted/additional/alternate shot/scene/take to the film, avoiding (where possible) to cut anything.

Movie sources:

  • BD or UHD-BD (when released)

Deleted/extended/alternate shots/scenes sources:

  • BD or UHD-BD (IF they will be released)
  • trailers
  • featurettes
  • making-of
  • documentaries
  • TV special
  • commercials
    etc.

Changes (provisional list):

  • flip the last Jedi statue shot, just before Wobani (if not fixed in the released BD/UHDBD)
  • add a classic crawl
  • add part of the Anaheim trailer at the beginning
  • add missing shots from “canon” sources
  • add missing shots from other sources, when “compatible”
  • use alternate takes when available

To-do list:

  • find further material
  • find better quality versions for the available ones
  • find the better crawl to use, or someone who would like to make one

I’m still collecting the available extra footage (I’m almost at 100 pieces, including trailers (most part), featurettes, commercials etc.; surely many more will show up during the next months, so of course this will be a “work in progress” at least until the official release of the BD (or UHD-BD) - hoping it will have deleted and/or extended scenes.

For the moment, I started to work using the workprint to place the deleted/alternate shots, so when the BD will come, the work will be almost complete at that moment (probably).

Any help, feedback, critic is welcome!

Dear Frink, I noted that on fanedit.info, Star Wars: Episode IV Revisited link point to the Purist edition, while the Purist link doesn’t work…

When you have time to fix it, may you add the HD Revisited version? (if it wasn’t the one in the missing/wrong link, of course)

Thanks a lot!

Have you tried seam carving? There are a couple of plugins for avisynth (both by V.C. Mohan).

Thanks for the tip; I tried it and, despite the fact it does a very good job doing liquid resize, it is suitable just for images, because using video, frames are wildly different between one and the next (and previous), making its result unusable.

I wonder if there is a good inpaint filer that uses the texture synthesis. I would add my thought: probably in ten years the neural net and deep learning computing will do this kind of things perfectly, like video upscale, black and white colorize, inpaint, color matching bewteen two clips… we’ll see!
