Jambe davdar's star wars begins preview on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3642rswxQsw&feature=channel_page

Thanks but I have that one. I was asking if there is a constant quality video of that scene available somewhere.

(Without the cuts to other qualities and the TV end credits at the end if possible)

I guess not, since that video seem to try using all the best sources available of that scene....

In short, I want to bring back that scene in a Grindhouse edit of Star Wars, so the quality don't matter a lot to me ( still it needs to be watchable!) but I can't use that present video because of all the none stop quality switches.

Hope I made myself clear this time! ;)

quote from jambe "It still needs some work and colour correction".

If you want it in better quality you will probably need his finished version once the documentary is finished, if ever. And you will obviously need t ask him for permission to use it and credit him in your edit.

If you have ever seen the small clip that was on the making of the special edition cd-rom making magic, jambe's is a huge improvement over that, and garret's which was good in its own way for the time it was released.

You are not going to get what you want unless you have a contact at the Lucas archives.  And i doubt the deleted scenes will ever be released and if they are they will be altered in some fashion by GL to ensure they meet his "original vision"lol.

Thread for all Usenet vs Torrent vs Rapidshare discussion
Time

I personally hate usenet, newsgroups and rapidshit.

Paying for usenet access, private torrents or newgroups is kind of funny how do you pay money to do a damn illegal thing?,lol

And in no way are they more private or safe they are also required to hand over the names of people and their ip adress and report them to their isp,    by law if someone is breaking it and they have a judges written order to do so.   Or if the ISP knows you are doing it they are supposed to hand over your info to them.

If you have verizon like i do it is against their service agreement and they can terminate your contract with you without warning.  Then send you an e-mail telling you have been cut off and they are giving your name to the proper authorities, has not happened to me does not make it any less real of a threat.

I don't know the laws of european countries, or canada.  But in the us we are beholden to the berne convention, international copyright law and interpol.  And there is a little thing president Clinton signed into law called the digital millennium copyright act.

And with Big brother out there watching all nobody is safe or secret, nobody has privacy.   Welcome to the world of the lawful espionage the gov does on its people in the name of national security.

Does not matter that said spying or espionage is against the us constitution, as far as i have heard, i have not read the document myself in extenso. Why let a little thing like that get in the way, lol.

Methods for colour matching/colour grading
Time

I tried restoring a scan of a 70mm film cel of return of the jedi using that PureImage demo.  i used the a frame from the gout as the color source.   Ended up looking like shit because of the quality of the scan, the guy who did those reference photos probably used a platbed scanner.

Vader did not end up looking too bad but Jejerrods image was, bad is an understatement.

Also i thought while watching the gout of jedi that the image had good colors and was sharper than i ever seen it, then i noticed the detail levels on the blacks being noticeably bad because of dvnr they looked washed out and almost grey.

Now not sure if this was the software i was using to playback the movie, nero showtime.

If you're using the Belbucus tracks, they are already synched to the GOUT, you just need to add 1.017s to the start of the files.

Follow this guide here:
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/How-to-make-a-Star-Wars-DVD-with-the-restored-mono-mix-PCM/topic/8288/

The process is the same if you're using two audio tracks, the only additional step is that you will need to encode both PCM files to AC3 to keep within bitrate limits.

Moth3r i am encoding for ntsc not pal does that make any difference?

Because i noticed in the thread you helped someone who needed to add the silence for pal playback.

I already figured the ac3 part just not the bitrates.

If i was burning to a blu ray media disc i would not have to worry about scrapping the PCM but as i am not doing that don't have blu ray i will do the best i can with what i have.

Their are some blu ray customs i do want to do someday, lol.  Just don't have the money and the know how.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Transfering from a 70mm print would not be ideal it would print in extra grain not on the original 35mm negative printed in at the blow up stage.

I wonder what the state of the internegative used to make those willits deigns film cels is in?  The empire cels had good color and grain structure and contrast, the star wars ones while going a little magenta werr far less faded than they should have been given the territory of eastman filmstock before LPP.  But the color on return of the jedi was almost gone and was faded severly, funny as the same year LPP printing really took off jedi was released. Not sure if these represent how the 70mm film cels actually look, or if it is due to the process of how they were scanned but they are here at this link.

http://www.jedi1.net/

Ideally what you would want to do is retransfer the vistavision plates or elements from their original camera negatives in 8 k, not the 35mm reduction of the same elements.  The you would also transfer the live action 35mm footage at 4  minimal. The Vistavision effects negative was i believe 65mm.

Which is what i think Ridley scott did on blade runner they had saved the original opticals produced in vistavision, and were able to use them for that added sharpness and effect on the blu ray.

Star Trek the motion picture was also photographed as far as its optical effects n vistavison by John Dykstra but Paramount would not pay the expense to retransfer them.  I wonder if the seperate elements were even saved, knowing them probably not as they never saved the optical elements for the original tv series making it necessary to recreate all the effects in cgi, lame.

Fortunately for star wars fans as lucas has said in the 1997 restoration documentary he saved every piece of film and all the separate opticals.

The same one that is on your transfer of the 1985 CAV release of star wars.  Also known as the Standard play full frame release.

But the audio i believe was patched by Belbecus to fix the side changes.  I have it on a dvdr of a bunch of belbecus audios included the same 35mm theatrical audio untouched called reference level.

It was from the laserdisc release in analog form in dolby stereo surround.

Is similar to the 1985 release as it does not have the close the blast doors line, but the threepio tractor beam line was added back in in 85 digital mix and is also missing on the original theatrical stereo mix.  Interestingly enough when Burtt and and his cohorts restored the soundtrack in 1993 the theepio line was left out again as a mistake.  It was meant to be included and the close the blast doors from the mono mix was added back in the 1997 special edition.

I only want the both available theatrical audios as to recreate the experience of the theatrical presentation from 1977.  It is not a necessary thing i just thoughtt would be a neat idea, and i had the same idea for adding back the 35mm theatrical empire strikes back audio also from the CAV release that was in analog form only, unfortunately no one has done a new capture.  The only source for the audio i have is your ac3 file straight off of your dvd.

As far as i know other than the 1993 which was basically the same soundtrack as the theatical return of the jedi mix without the limiting, and empire from what i read had no changes either until the special editions.   The first Laserdisc release was digital from day one.

So star wars 1977 is the only release where the audio was remixed so many times, and had three separate mixes during its initial run.  Adding the 1985, the 1993, the 1997 and 2004 makes seven different mixes. Not including the foreign dubs which were done in stereo but used the selections and takes of the mono mix as a basis.

So basically my idea was the same as the preservations of the full frame laserdiscs but replacing the video with a widescreen image.  I mean i have tried to watch the lasers i own them, but i just cannot watch pan and scan.  I would even use the pre gout letterbox video from the laserdiscs i don't care or the japan special collection, just as long as it is decent quality and in widescreen.

The theatrical 35mm is almost always left of of fan dvd's even the editdroid did not include it they included the 1985 thinking it was the same as the 77 mix.  Only your preservation disc of the laserdisc includes it.

The 1985, has been used a couple of times in fans releases, but the 1993 is almost universally on every fan disc being sourced from the definitive collection but this is already on the gout in 2.0 dd.  Of course the 1997 audio would not sync up properly without doing some edits to make it pre special edition.

I cannot disobey my master
Time

It is more like i " I cannot disobey the script"lol.

Just like all sorts of shitty bad plots and unbelievable things happen in the prequels because it is in the script.

The jedi script was a noticeable drop in quality from empire strikes back, the script chores Kasden did on jedi were more out of thanks to lucas and loyalty. But he had very little input into the story.

His ideas were ignored Like killing Han Solo, which i agree which Lucas being against.  But i do agree with Kasden's idea that a second death star wars just dumb and not  original.

Then the quality drops many fathoms further on the phantom menace script, once you get attack of the clones and revenge of the sith the script is so crappy as if to say "a script we don't need a script we got cgi"

At least with the star wars holiday special, howard the duck and the clone wars movie the crappy script is not his fault.  Didn't full of Baloney Filoni write the clone wars script?

How would someone go about syncing these 2 audio tracks to the gout ?

What i would know to do as a starting point I am guessing is some sort of software to strip the video, remove the other audio tracks already on the dvd and the lego demo.  I don't even care about keeping the original menu.

It could be play only as long as i can switch back and forth between the audio mixes on the fly using my dvd remote.

AVATAR and 3D in general....
Time

I think stereoscopic 3-D for animation is a neat concept but for live action films i could care less.  Except the fine line between what is live action and what is cgi animation is very thin these days.  90% of New hollywood blockbusters these days could be considered animation with all their cgi fackery and nothing real.

As for the Avatar film itself i think it could have a nice element of romance as well as be an action epic, the terminator meets titanic.  Can Cameron pull it off, i would be willing to give him more of a shot than lucas or spielberg who have proven time and time again in recent years that they lost the touch for making good films.

Not that Cameron is perfect either.  Season 2 of dark angel was pure shit, and his script for spider man was almost as awful as jj's was for superman.

Galaxy Express 999 (* unfinished project due to DVD release - lots of info *)
Time

No conformation yet as to whether or not the japan anniversary blu rays for the galaxy express films will include english subtitles or a dub track.

The upcoming tenchi muyo ovas will include the english dub, as did the movies.

Most of ghost in the shell in blu ray there have english sub track or dub.

Evangelion 1.0 came out in english subtitles on dvd in hong kong not as a bootleg but as an official release, too bad the japan releases are sub free.

Ponyo came out from disney of japan with subtitles instead of waiting for the dub to be included.

With the new space battleship yamato film coming out in december i wonder if i could look forward to a blu ray release of the tv series and films of the older generation cartoon/anime.

The masters for the bolar wars are in fantastic shape and they restored the first season in HD then dumped the transfer to dvd.  Only comet empire season 2 if left with a substandard transfer, and also the films have been out in dvd since 1999, they could benefit from a new transfer.  Only if bandai thinks it is worth the money.  It is remored they are restoring the original mobile suit gundam for blu ray.  knowing them though it will be 90 bucks for dvd/blu ray as usual.

"It's like if they redid Star Wars, and not only tried to make Vader sympathetic"

Already been done i am affraid, ever see the orginal return of the jedi?

Never mind the prequels which were supposed to make a guy in the star wars universe who is equivalent to hitler a sympathetic guy by starting him out as a naive 9 year old boy.  Lucas failed miserably but that does not change his aim that he changed the saga to be vader's story, the whole framing of the saga now is in the context of an evil bastard being the hero instead of his son redeeming the spark of good left in him.

There is already a french release of dune theatrical cut by Lynch on Blu Ray.

Not sure if it is region free or not.

A lot of times films you want on blu ray are out in other regions or countries, which sucks.  Like a Fistful of Dollars and a few Dollars more, i think the us does have a blu ray for the good the bad and the ugly.

Conan the barbarian is supposed to get blu ray release in september but in europe and probably region locked.

CONAN The destroyer had an anamorphic release just not in the u.s.a.

They took  forever to port over the restored anamorphic dvd of the first film in ntsc region 1 so  am not surprised.  The first film is considered a cult classic, and the second is considered a box office disaster only so far removed from the awful red sonja which was film number III.  But 2 is where the bad campy jokes started to be inserted.

They may have released destroyer in anamorphic form in germany but at least there they could make some of their money back.

Kind of like how the first beastmaster film is the only one the studios felt like wasting money on for dvd.

Yeah in his mind it only applies to comporations or other people including the artists family changing their work posthumously.  He supports artists who change their own work.

If the three stooges were alive and said they wanted their films colored and the black and white versions buried i'm sure he would agree, lol.

How different though are the star wars special editions and lucas,  than a director who ran out of time and money, or the studio took their film away and then the director later finishes the film as they always had intended?

Sometimes even Novelists put out an "authors preferred edition".

Star Wars Infinities and What it could mean to the Prequels
Time

I hated Empire Infinities comic they showed Boba Fett's face.  He looked like that bad actor from the prequels who played jango, and in my mind boba fett is jaster mareel journeyman protector, not some bad clone wannabe.

Prequel Infinities would be as bad as if they did a prequel radio drama series.  Can you imagine them trying to cast a whiny/bitchy sound alike for hayden who would deliver those great acting wooden performances without being seen, lol.

The infinities comics which includes star wars tales and infinities the original trilogy and the force unleashed sith edition is mainly for fan wish fulfillment.  Or Star wars visions.

You can have a Cyborg Darth Maul fight Obi Wan on tattooine or Darth Vader versus Darth Mauls clone.

There is some stuff that is eu continuity which really should not be and should fall under infinities like the marvel comics.  Jaxxon the bunny, lol.  But the prequel as they are should also be an infinities because they don't fit the original trilogy.

What if the prequel were as people original thought?  Obi wan OB1 was a clone of the original kenobi, and the clone wars were cloned jedi fighting sith and mandalorians.

What if their was a love triangle between Anakin, and his wife, and Kenobi.  And Luke and Leias parentage was uncertain Obi wan could be their father, lol.

C'boath was going to original be a clone of obi wan in the zahn trilogy but lucasfilm said the prequel era was off limits.

Movies you would like to see on Blu-ray.

The original star wars trilogy from 1977-1983 restored for anamorphic HD blu ray video.

Not a dump of the gouts source on a blu ray disc, which i'm sure Lucas would do.

Actually my dream star wars set would be like Ridley Scotts's 5 versions of blade runner set, and the special features would be retrospective documentaries and commentaries. Deleted Scenes, screen tests, and the old making ofs.  And the original trilogy restored by Robert Harris with the other cuts included.

Back to the Future Trilogy i have heard this one is in the works, i was dissapointed both us releases did not include the english dts.  So i did not buy the dvd.  I will at some point buy the japan release which has been re-issued and still has the dts.

Indiana Jones trilogy without the added cgi in raiders, george cannot just slip that scene in there and expect me not to notice.  He did the same thing with American Graffiti.

THX 1138 and American Graffiti without any cgi tinkering or i won't buy them.

The Man with No name trilogy By Sergio Leone, yes already out in italy or something but a  us release would be nice.

From Criterion i would like to see Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress on Blu Ray.

I would like a proper release of star treks 1-6 without dvnr ruination.

Both cuts of the lord of the rings trilogy via seemless branching, i know new line is doing them as seperate releases to make more money.

Is JAWS or E.T. on Blu Ray yet? if not then i want those in their theatrical cuts, if spielberg can put out 3 editions on one release ofd close encounters he can do those.

Do you have a list of anime films dubbed on vhs that are not on dvd or blu ray?

Off the top of my head there is:

Outlanders.

dirty pair movies

galaxy express 999

OLD harmony gold dub for dragonball unofficially available

Then there is the harlock and queen millenia dubs from Cark Macek but the shows were cut up so badly as to be unrecognizable.  It would have worked better if was able to use ssx to pad out the rest of the remaining episodes because as a broadcast requirement they needed a certain amount of episodes for a television package and they had to be dubbed.

Sci FI required a dub for Gurren Lagann and that is the only reason we didn't get a sub only release.

Most dubs are really not labors of love and are really only studio or tv network politics, policies to get a show on tv.  Business that is all it is.

While Galaxy Express IS easily available via either Korea or Japan, the VIZ dub is lost to the VCR bargain bin.

I would LOVE if someone picked up the series at one point, even if only for a sub only release.

I heard, read the dub was horrible and the film had cuts made to it.  Which is why they released an uncut subbed version right?  or am i wrong.

A lot of old english dubs are lost to a vhs bargain bin which is why only fan presevations can save them, unless they get released somewhere worldwide like akira streamline dub being on the madman dvd release in Australia or something and in low quality 2.0 dolby 286k with pal speed up.  When the criterion CAV laserdisc release is uncompressed PCM on the dub.

Matsumoto Fans get almost nothing in the us.  It was better in the vhs laserdisc days to get some of his series and films, in the dvd era they are harder to find in region 1.

Harlock is available officially as a streaming online release with engrish subs.  Can be wathed on crunchyroll or funimation sites.  The same for galaxy express i think, have not watched it yet so cannot vouch for the quality of the subs.  LIVE-EVIL's Harlock had the remastered video, and audio and original audio, fan commentaries and real english subs.  But they were only doing it to try and get someone to get off their duff and license it here which finally happened if in youtube quality, with engrish subs.

The galaxy express movies however i am not sure who owns the rights to them.  Often a tv series is under another licensee than the movies.  Does BANDAI own the rights like they do for space battleship yamato?

You know the reason you cannot import the tv series one season at a time unless you wish to spend 400 hundred dollars a piece.

Which is not unheard of in japan But usually you get at least 2 episodes for dvd.  Now the first Episode of Haruhi Season 2 is going to be on dvd as a single episode and wil be 50 dollars, lol.

Usually if a company is going to include an older dub they need to have a master to work with and clean up for dvd, they are not going to dub the audio off a vhs tape unless it is the only existing copy left.

They need the dialogue reels or tapes recorded for a series.  Voyager Entertainment could not locate the original dialog reels for starblazers for instance, and they also claimed they needed access to the sound effects and music tracks to do a remaster.  They best they could do was take the broadcast master and dub it to dvd.

In the case of robotech they were able to create a new 5.1 mix because the japanese gave them access to their sound library, and they located the original recording reels for the english dub.

I am something of a purist i like the old stereo or monoaural dubs for a series to be either left alone warts and all or be cleaned up from the best possible source.  Transformers season 1 recently got a re-release with the old mono dub remixed into stereo.  But i would have preferred 2 channel or 1 channel mono, whatever at least it was the real audio and sound effects unlike the rhino 5.1 mix.

As for the robotech protoculture box they left off the old mix that was on the old dvd release in 2.0 though was a mono mix.

Article on big time stars & movies tanking
Time

The funny thing is Hollywood blames the audience and the current economy and not themselves for making shitty movies nobody wants to see, they make obscure art films or politics pieces that make ten cents while films like transformers 2 make tons of money.

The audience wants characters they can identify with and if barring that at least be entertained from the doldrums and boringness of reality.

Some films are critic proof and will make shitloads of money despite what the fans and critics think of them, like crystal skull or the star wars prequels.  At least they did their job of entertaining people for a couple hours if not beyond that.  Other films don't even manage that which is a joke.  Lucas at the bottom of his creative well and powers still does better than Hollywood, even provokes a response even if it is negative one.  Most other films get a meh i saw it for 2 hours and then forgot about it.

I mean people like the tried and true cliche concept of the heroes journey and it still resonates with people, which to me explains the success of the jj star trek movie doing something that has not been done since the original star wars trilogy, or peter jackson's lord of the rings trilogy.

The hero journey concept also explains the success of the matrix trilogy as well.

If Hollywood or the independants start making films people actually want to see the audience will come in huge numbers.  But not every film can be universal or mainstream enough in its tastes to satisfy everyone young and old.

I would like For people like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to make those magical films they used to make when younger but they  have moved on to their vanity projects and won't do them.  OR if they try they fail miserably like the prequels of star wars, indy iv, war of the world etc.
