Am I too big of a geek...?
Time

Don't feel bad the Falcon is one of the coolest things star wars.  I wanted to buy the lego falcon to give to my nephew then realized the price was so steep, like 300 bucks on amazon.lol, man that plastic must be made out of gold.

Hey at least did not bring home a life size Jar Jar standee or something, though a life size jar jar in carbonite would be cool.

I used to collect star wars books, kind of gave that up a while ago other than a couple paperbacks here and there and the occational hardback.  I used to collect all the comics that featured the original trio of luke, leia and han, and novels set after the return of the jedi.

Now i try to keep only stuff that really is close in feel and spirit to the oot.

I Don't collect clone wars, prequel crap.  And i resented the prequels invading the EU eras of the oot and post jedi, when you want to go back to  good old fashioned star wars you want to escape that revisionist crap but it  is everywhere.

Too bad the prequels could not have been written as novels in the spirit of the original Zahn trilogy, fans would not have their vision of star wars being muddied by absolute shit that was as far removed from the original star wars trilogy as possible.  On a superficial level it was the same universe and you had characters with the same names, but it was like lucas was writing for a totally different sci fi universe, one that was uninteresting, generic and like every other throw away hollywood piece of trash.

Thread I saw on IMDb: When did you realize Palpatine's true identity? (in the PT)
Time

I wonder if cameron can pull off a wonderful action spectacle/sci romance, he has more of chance doing so than other directors that shall remain nameless.

As for Titanic the acting by winslet and dicaprio in that film were decent/togood, as a historical piece it was not accurate but it was accurate to conveying the emotions of the characters and jack was obviously the avatar for the males in the audience, as rose was for the female audience.

But i think a lot of that films feeling, haunting quality comes form the music.  Horner won an oscar after all.

Star Wars fans will never forgive titanic for dethroning star wars, but if not for titanic then it would have been dark knight, so who cares.

The thing that put star wars into the number one spot again anyways was the illegitimate 1997 release with the added cartoon cgi.  And the damn thing had been re-released so many times you think Lucas money bin must have been getting empty, lol.

I don't care either way there is no way including it would have made the film any better, except get a pg-13 rating and lose lucas money and action figure sales and kids meal sales, lol.

Though it might have been unintentionally funny, which these awful films are known for.

There is no way Jango's death is going to be any more important than bobas, their smalltime henchmen and i blame the EU for making boba into this godly glorified figure.

Remember how Boba dies in return of the jedi, a freeze blind han whacks him with the butt of a spear and he careens off the side of the sailbarge into the sarlac for a cheap laugh.

The descent to absolute childishness started in return of the jedi, continued on into phantom menace where you have a racist characiture of a character, fart and poop jokes.

Though things like ewoks, chewie swinging like tarzan long before shia did it ,and cheap jokes are not as bad as jar jar or hayden.  There are enough strong moments in jedi that these cheesy witticisms of lucas don't upset the boat, but the prequel star wars trilogy, clone wars movie, and indiana jones IV were absolute piles of shit and unworthy of Lucas star wars and indy reputation, though they were worthy of his howard the duck, star wars holiday special reputation.

Interesting article on Summer films
Time

"For example, literature, which by far is my favorite form of art, invariably always has some kind of message behind it whether intentionally or unintentionally placed there by the author."

When an author does intentionally place a message in their work it becomes an allegory, and and usually there is only one correct way to solve this allegory and the author offers the solution.

The other way the way i prefer and i think is less harmful to a story is applicability, an unintentional metaphor or reading pulled out by the reader.

There is pure allegory like Dante's Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost.

Middle of the road allegory still heavy of an allegorical influence like chronciles of narnia,

Or books that have no topical allegory whatsoever and its left up to the reader like Tolkien's lord of the rings.

Subtext in films is not an abuse of art, it is an abuse of art for films to be a puff of air representing nothing other than noise, special effects and ticket sales.  The idea of film is that it is supposed to provoke a response in the viewer, whether of joy, sadness, fear, absolute terror, horror, being uplifted, or being shown the destitute and evil character of man.

Even bad and poorly made films provoke a response.

I think it was Lucas himself who said film as art was a lot of pretentious bullshit, and that he preferred to think himself as a toymaker.

I don't have the direct quote, but i remember that from an article on the making of thx or graffiti.  Though it very well could have been during star wars.

Then you would love the novel Shatterpoint, since you love the prequels and pretentiousness.

Mace just takes his head off, in the theater there was no sound or sparks indicating his jetpack had failed.

Lucas added them on the dvd.  The reek creature damages his jetpack so he cannot escape.

Kind of reminds me of the jedi radio drama han says to boba "I'm gonna rip your helmet off with your head inside!"

When OOT films were released on video
Time

http://www.starwars.com/hyperspace/member/kessel/f20051017/index.html

The 1982 rental tape was the first domestic home video release, on vhs.  I own it is noteworthy considering the later re-issues from 1985 contained the new 85 digital stereo remix for Episode IV, star wars.

The 1982 vhs, and 1985 CAV laserdisc are also noteworthy because they would be the first and last time the original 35mm stereo mix would be made available from the 1977 theatrical run, the mono and six track never got an official release period.

I've bought star wars so many times on video, that i have contributed in a small way to making Lucas a richer man, i'm somewhat ashamed to admit the amount of copies i have on vhs, ced, betamax, laserdisc, vcd, and dvd.

No i have never owned the movies in super8mm, 16mm or 35mm, though i do have trailers for empire and jedi in 35mm.

I have never gotten into fringe formats like the vhd releases only in japan, or pal releases on laserdisc or vhs except for the first issue uk releases in pan and scan, and the first issue french laserdiscs non thx.  Then i have the japan special collection for all three original films and both the us and japan release for the definitive collection, lol. Also owning virtually every us pressing on laserdisc.

The first issue laserdiscs where slighly sped up due to time compression, had no digital sound, and to this day many have succumbed to laser rot.  Were in pan and scan 4:3. Had a lot of noise in the picture, even worse on the widesreen letterbox.  Which is why they were color corrected under the thx program and put through a process of digital video noise reduction, which caused other side effects and artifacts noticeable on the gout.

Help Wanted: SLIPSTREAM image request - AND WIDESCREEN preservation request (Sky Movies subscribers see posts 4 onwards)...
Time

This movie was released in 70mm blow up and had a six track mix.  Produced by Gary Kurtz.  One of the biggest flops in the history of the movies, even for a low budget flick its considered a disaster.

Basically tries to tell the same story according to critics as blade runner and blade runner did it better.

As for what darkgryphon had to say the 5.1 could be authentic if it was a remix of the six track and not a cooked up 5.1 from a stereo source like a lot of bargain basement dvds.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I don't know if it could be done.  But my radical idea would involve removing Jar Jar completely from the prequels, those annoying roger roger robots and Hayden for starters, get rid of completely useless characters like Mace Windu and Count Dooku, make the senate and jedi less retards and more intelligent, but then you would pretty much have to reshoot the whole damn trilogy, lol.

Star Wars Movies on Blu-ray (and some documentary) News
Time

I had seen an adapted scope print of the theatrical version of thx 1138 on sale a couple years ago, i could not afford the 150.00 before tax and shipping price tag, no way to project it or any way to store it.

I also let an adapted scope print in 16mm of american graffiti slip through my fingers and i could have had it for as low as sixty dollars a former school teacher was selling it, it had subtitles in the lower black area beneath the picture however.

The thing is you never know if these prints come from licensed sellers, most are not.  Most are former prints for university, library use, film clubs, conventions, rental services  before the advent of vcr's or airline prints.

Star Wars prints ever one i have seen sold in super8mm, 16mm, or the illegal to sell to the public flavors of 35mm or 70mm have sold for several thousand dollars, faded or unfaded.  Since most are eastman stock, i would never pay that kind of money.

The best prints are the derann ones.   Which were officially licensed to them for the UK only, on mylar low fade stock, they only ever had star wars and return of the jedi.  Both in mono sound, stereo 35mm mix folded down into monaural. Only Available in Super8mm, scope and the full feature, mastered from a 35mm release print.    Without actually owning a print i would not be able to say whether it showed the full image or was cropped.

One of the best things about the original thx was the monaural mix Walter Murch did, with the Lalo Scriffin score.  It is infinitely preferable to the new mix on that cgi abomination.

Too bad i only have it on vhs in pan and scan and the letterbox laserdisc is long out of print, and was never remaster or restored under the thx laserdisc program, graffiti even got a signature release on laser with all the bells and whistles, star wars got the definitive box treatment.  THX didn't even get digital sound except in japan. Where i am told the laserdisc had some cuts and censoring done to the nude scenes.

Even willow got a thx laserdisc in letterbox, except it is one of the worst rotters in the history of laserdisc, lol.

THX 1138 was never successful enough to even afford it a dump to dvd straight from the laserdisc master in non anamorphic form as a bonus disc. Graffiti had minor changes from the original theatrical version to the home video and dvd versions that it could easily be put out as a seamless branched blu ray, but i know that won't happen as Lucas prefers the version with the cgi sunset and changed building and a new 5.1 mix instead of the original and mono theatrical mixes.

But then again we never got the 35mm mixes for the original indiana jones trilogy on dvd, thank the force for laserdisc, lol.

Movies you would like to see on Blu-ray.
Time

I wonder what the Hidden Fortress will look like on Blu Ray.

Toho has already released some of the Kurosawa films to blu ray in japan.

Though i have not been able to find any screenshots online.

I would also like to see Yojimbo, Sanjuro.

I wish also wish Criterion would put out Sanshiro Sugata 1 and 2, known in the west as judo saga but they probably don't have the rights to it considering the lack of a laserdisc or dvd from them.

Ran was scrapped for rights reasons which was lame, but Kagemusha was the replacement.

Toho is also putting out a 1080p remaster of the original gojira/godzilla.

It will get a stateside release, but who knows if it will be the same master.  The classic media one was an abomination in comparison to the restored japan release on dvd.   Even the BFI release was better.

I wonder if the rights Holders for the old King Kong, are doing a blu ray transfer.  I would like to see some willis o'brien stop motion on blu like that or the lost world.  Also the entire catlalog of Harryhausen Including his swan song The Clash of the Titans.

I also want to see these 2 Bond films on Blu Ray, Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies.  If they can put shitfests like The World is not Enough and Die Another day on blu why not the other brosnan flicks?

Well i know someone botched the aspect ratio in the second dvd release for goldeneye so what is the chance they will ever offer that on blu ray consider it probably means a new scan.

After seeing the Adventures of Robin Hood being on blu ray i would also like to see the sea hawk, and captain blood.  As well as The Mark of Zorro Tyrone Power version, the black pirate with douglas fairbanks, scaramouche with stewart granger.

The restored Fritz Lang Metropolis is supposed to come out next year from KINO video, if no more delays happen.  I wish Kino would put out the douglas fairbanks catalog on blu ray, silent films with organ scores and intertitles on blu ray,lol what a concept.  The black pirate technicolor version is for me the must have of all fairbanks swashbucklers.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.
Time
Vaderisnothayden said:I'm in favor of he 97 SE being made available on dvd and blu-ray. It's part of Star Wars history and it's important to the study of how Lucas's Star Wars mindset developed. I have it on vhs. At least it doesn't have Hayden leering at the end.

He takes an outtake of hayden from episode III, and digitally cuts him into the scene, cause we all know Hayden was such a better actor than Shaw, lol.

If Anakin really died when he turned sith then just who the hell did Luke save/redeem on the Death Star II?

It is like becoming a sith so you can stop people from dying but killing your wife, when your whole reason for turning was to save her.  Boy did Lucas drop the ball on that one.  Also remember he totally forget to film the lightsaber being picked up from the ground to later give to luke, they had to do pickups to get the footage.

He is not that familiar with the oot as evidenced from interviews, and probably did not even bother watching them before writing and shooting the prequels to keep things consistent.  Even if he was too lazy he could have had one or more of his employees do this and put together notes from the scripts and films, a continuity journal  as the series existed after return of the jedi in 1983.

He got a master database set up to keep things consistent in the EU, but for the canon film series no such attention to detail matters?  Must have slipped his mind.

In my opinion star wars deserved better, if he was going to half ass it he may as well have hired other writers and directors who respected the material to make the new films.

And Look at some of the actors the prequels had, and their talents were completely wasted.  Ewan Mcgregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee etc.

They wanted a james dean type for Anakin, a reason we got Hayden.  Though look at his screen test he has almost no presence or charisma which are things dean had in spades.  But his screen test was better than his performance in the films so Lucas must be the problem since Lucas did not direct the test but Robin gurland did, but she definitely is no fred roos.  You see Sophia Coppola went to bat for Hayden and pretty much got him the job, George Lucas being her godfather and all.  He had a bit part in the Virgin Suicides ?

That dude from Dawson's creek almost got the job, not van der beek the other guy, Josh Jackson.

Star Wars can be a blessing and a curse for actors it probably cost Mcgregor his chance to be james bond, because the producers did not want obi wan as bond. Not that he was ever really  in the running but he was not even considered because of being typecast. But the same thing happened to Hugh Jackman being typecast as Wolverine, and also to Christian Bale being typecast as Batman.

BANNED BOND: The Criterion Collection on DVD (Released)
Time

This is the criterion captured set, so of course the video comes from the recalled/banned out of print CAV editions.

The Lowry remaster did not even exist when ff did this set, only the non restored but correctly colored special editions.

The criterion release to me is the ultimate release, it is well worth the money owning the laserdiscs as they will never be issued on dvd or blu ray.  Not sure but as far as i know these are the only terrence young approved transfers. When UA/MGM decided to modern colorize the films under lowry not to the specs of the director or original cinematographers.   Maybe they will put version that looks like the films looked and sounded in theaters, but it is highly doubtful.  There is good reason why the first issued dvd's are getting collectors prices.

Never mind that many of the Lowry dvd's and blus are complete botch jobs up there with the 2004 star wars trilogy release.  They got a cleaner looking picture but the color timing is all wrong, or they got the aspect ratios wrong like on goldeneye.

Unless you are lucky enough and rich enough to own ib technicolor prints of the connery films you will never really be able to experience the films as they were intended to look.

The Lowry attempts are overly bright and have the colors saturation turned up, I know for instance License to Kill did not look lie that in theaters.  The first dvd release even with ts faded colors was a closer approximation.

What they should be aimng for on home video like blu ray is filmlike quality with the grain intact, the colors where they should be and so on.  The Lowry attempts make the films look like modern video shot movies.

When i bought the pal release of frwl and it had this ugly blue tint on the night scenes i wanted to throw the dvd in the trash.

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time

I like the refit Enterprise filming model the best, and thought Paramount was absolutely nuts to sell it at a christies auction.  Though they were going throw it away so some fan bought it.

They replaced it with the ugly looking cgi monstrosity in the new movie.

There are pictures of the model up online and the detail in the model cannot be duplicated by a computer graphic.

Not really Ryan Church's fault either his initial design looks better than the finished ship in the film.

I never had any problem with a new redesign of the ship after all this was a new continuity/reboot, but why did'nt they build a studio scale model.  It just boggles the mind these people thinking cgi is so much better.

Cgi might be okay for a tv show like Enterprise but for a movie made for hundreds of millions of dollars you figure they would have done it right.

Why even bother paying for wardrobe just have the actors show up naked and put cgi clothes on them, or better still replace the actors with a computer graphic.

So is Lucas going to learn from his mistakes and film the live action show actually on film?
Time

Kaminski's book is thoughtful and very well written, for a critical look at the complete films 1-6, as well  as exploring the unfilmed sequels it leaves no stone unturned.

It is not a lucas hate piece, nor a suck up to lucas piece.  But it is a clear and concise view of how the script writing for the originals were handled in an atmosphere of collaboration and friends helpings Lucas.  The originals were strengthened by having other directors and writers help out, doing the prequels by himself was a huge mistake, and essentially hubris that destroyed the franchise.

But the catch is that the prequels and indiana jones IV made more money than the originals, so in some peoples minds lucas was proven right.

There was a lot more collaboration on indiana jones IV but the story idea and the mcguffin sucked imho, not saying Ford is a horrible actor he is excellent, and Spielberg is a good director despite war of the worlds and crystal skull.  I think people are willing to give Spielberg another chance at making another good film, as for Lucas forget about it.

Even though the public consensus is that Revenge of the Sith was his redemption and a good movie.  I was watching that on tv for a few minutes the other day before changing stations and laughing at how bad the acting and dialog was during the duel between kenobi and vader on mustafar.

It looked like Mcgregor had difficulty delivering his laughably bad dialog with conviction and heart, he is a good actor and almost pulls it off, but then hayden opens his mouth and the performance drops down into the sewers, lol.

I don't think lucas will ever come to his senses.  The original versions will probably cease to exist in the future, if he has not already burned them on funeral pyre.  Like Luke Burning Vaders suit in rotj.

I think i officially stopped caring about the Lucas canon and the main film series, when he added hayden to return of the jedi.

I enjoy some eu from time to time, but the even the quality of the fiction and video games are hit and miss.  And mostly miss.

Besides the new tv show will be in the Alternate Universe continuity where the original films the real star wars from 1977-1983 don't exist.  But the special editions do, and the prequels.  It is really a third branch of continuity because in there the 1997 versions also cease to exist.

If he has Daniel Logan as Boba Fett, and has Boba Fett being a clone of jango, again alternate universe tangent of continuity i vote for a boycott of the show.  He may just a well have Hayden as Vader,it is not as if he is going to make true star wars he stopped doing that in 1983.  He rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone.

Movies you would like to see on Blu-ray.
Time

Lucash has already gone blu.  The bad fourth indiana jones film, the awful clone wars movie are both on the format.  And the entire first season of the new clone war cartoon is coming out next.

The first 3 indiana jones films will probably hit blu way ahead of star wars, too bad raiders will be the tampered with version that replaces a single shot with a cgi one.  And for that reason alone i will boycott the release.

I also won't be buying the ruined 2004 version of star wars trilogy, the shit prequels or the ruined versions of thx and american graffii.  Lucash can keep his cg alterations to himself, I want the real movies as they were in cinemas during their initial release.  Not as vanity projects he did when he cold not make anything new or original. I won't be paying to see Indiana Jones V in theaters.   Indiana Jones and the Search for more money.

Indiana Jones in Plan 9 from outer space.
