Original Trilogy Reception 1977-1983
Time

I disagree but after all that is my opinion.

Anakin/Vader was done in such a way in return of the jedi to make the audience sympathetic to the character.  Not so Hayden Vader who never was a good man or good friend to begin with. He was always a traitorous asshole from episode II onward to III.  I have to therefore fly in the face of Lucas continuity and disavow the existence of the prequels because they ruin the original trilogy.

Reboot the EU
Time

The only thing that needs to be Booted is Lucas.  He no longer understands Star Wars if he ever did.

The EU was ruined because of the prequels.  If the authors of the EU could write their own better prequels or deny Lucas prequels existed as well as deny the special editions we would all be better off.

Besides the person who besides Troy Denning did the most damage to the EU Traviss no longer writes for star wars because dave filonis series crapped over her made up Mandalorian continuity in that crap clone wars cgi series.

It was her idea to kill Mara Jade.  Though her original idea was Luke, and she hates the Jedi based on some kind of real life hatred of religion or something or so i read, don't know if thats just fan bullshitting.  Her idea that Daala a war criminal becomes the chief of state. I am glad she was canned or voluntarily left, she can rape halo instead of star wars.

Original Trilogy Reception 1977-1983
Time

How does Revenge of the Sith with the new numbers fall just slighly below return of the jedi.  Jedi was a flawed but great film while Sith was a Turkey.

I refuse to account for the fact that Sith made more money makes it somehow a better film.

By that system Wrath of Khan sucks and JJ Abrams Trek is superior.

Also by those numbers Crystal Skull is better than Raiders.  Phantom Menace better than Star Wars 77, Clones better than empire strikes back etc.

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 3 - Who Makes Better Use Of CGI?
Time

Despite his altering of other directors movies he did not Direct Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi.

He did direct the special editions though, lol.

Since Kersh said do whatever you want and Marquand can't complain from the grave. I'm Sure he would have been thrilled to have Shaw replaced with an actor who was only 2 years old during the films release.

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 3 - Who Makes Better Use Of CGI?
Time

I was pretty much stating how modern Lucas and Modern Spielberg are virtually the same, except Lucas is a bit more over the top.  Whereas In the past they would have used sets and traditional effects almost the same as well.  Spielberg moves the camera differently and directs his actors differently but their kind of like two halves of the same coin.  That is why Raiders was such a smash hit.  The 2 biggest names in cinema at the time.

Now you could not pay me to see one of their movies.  Although to Spielberg's credit he has had more good films than bad ones because he has made more films.  Lucas made so few that 3 of the bad ones are episodes 1-3 which without he would look better.  He still would be regarded as the man who directed 2 great films and one experimental and original.

In the Modern Era Spielberg has:

Good films:

Jurassic Park

Shindlers List

Saving Private Ryan

Minority Report

A.I.

Bad films:

Jurassic Park 2

Munich

Catch me if you can

The terminal

Amistad

Hook

Crystal Skull

War of the Worlds

Lucas Good films:

THX 1138

American Graffiti

Star Wars

Bad films:

Episodes 1-3 of the star wars prequels.  Therefore 50% of his output as a director is shit.

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 3 - Who Makes Better Use Of CGI?
Time

This thread is retarded its like who makes better use of cgi Lucas or Lucas, because ILM is a Lucas company who did the effects on Spielberg's films.

Who makes better use of cgi ILM or ILM.

A better question would be Weta versus ILM.  My vote would go to Weta.

As to the question this thread goes Lucas gets a goose egg and so does Spielberg.  Both used bad cgi.

Lucas on the prequels and Indiana Jones IV.

Spielberg on Indiana Jones IV and War of the Worlds.

The cgi was less bad and in your face in Minority Report and Jurassic Park still i guess thats like half a point for Spielberg.

Neither should be allowed to direct ever again.  Spielberg had two duds with war of the worlds and Indy 4 money and time i will never get back, and Lucas the prequels and helped Spielberg ruin indiana jones or was that the other way around?

A Serious Question For VINH

Ok, this has gone way off track (not surprising).  Let me sort of drag this back slightly by asking a similar question of skyjedi - why 2005?

The year the prequel trilogy ended of course.  Although despite early reviews as a redemption of Lucas it was shit. Not nearly as bad as 2008 with nuked fridges and Aliens, you know that Indiana Smith franchise, lol.

LOST
Time

Lost sounds a bit like another show that jumped the shark with its plot Heroes.  Why neither show had been canceled is beyond my limited understanding of crappy shows.

I guess Lost is better than American Idol.  But that is like saying what cancer would you prefer to get than another, lol.

I mean its like a dark sci fi version of Gilligans Island.  Instead of just Gilligan being retarded everyone is.  And like everyone is tripping on mushrooms and seeing things like sci fi stuff that can't happen on Earth at least the one i know i live on,lol.

Its like Indiana Jones and Aliens fucking nonsense!

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 2 - Who Has The Better Facial Hair?
Time

The two are vastly different directors this is like comparing apples and oranges.  But based on when they used to make good films my vote still goes to Lucas.  Spielberg never directed a film that changed the culture like star wars.  He probably is insanely jealous of that.  He can keep his pretentious academy trophies.

Lucas was the movie king and beat Spielberg at his own game.  Better ideas and better stories.  Lucas a much more theatrical epic approach to things while also being very documentary style.  You can tell Spielberg came out of tv directing on his early films they are so suburban in mentality.

I guess Spielberg makes films and Lucas makes movies.  Movies are to entertain.  Spielberg used to make movies until he wanted to be taken seriously as a director and then lost his ability to make the films he used to make.  As important as a film as Shindler's List is it robbed the world of the types of films Spielberg used to make that were fun.

Lucas started to make videogames instead of films or movies.  Except they lacked the audience being in control or interactivity and did not engage audiences at all except to assault the eyes with repeated and contrived computer generated imagery that cannot hide the lack of likeable characters, zero plot or story and sterile imagination and complete lack of everything that makes a movie work.

A Serious Question For VINH
Time

No Hayden was not just awful in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  His acting in Jumper was laughably bad to just plain mediocre.

How could you find anyone more dislikable except maybe for Shia Lebouf or Chris Pine.

Seriously i get that chicks think he is hot, but besides that he cannot act to save his life.  Even in a fucking high school play he probably would make you want to get up on stage and start punching characters.

A Serious Question For VINH
Time

Hayden destroyed more than Vader he also ruined Anakin Skywalker.  But Natalie ruined the Skywalker mom role in episodes II and III.

The characters were kind of not very well sketched out in the first film but they had a essential humanity that was lacking in II and III.

The novelizations even though not the best did better than Lucas.  They focused on the human aspects of the characters and could not distract with cgi for lack of everything.

The fact is Lucas was such a bad writer and director that it took tie in books, usually considered garbage to serious readers of sci fi and fantasy and two prolific authors, who are considered bad writers for the first 2 prequel novelizations and a top rate author for the third.

The first a writer of Tolkien pastiche without the linguistics or scholarly background also known as a consumate plagiarist right up their with Lucas, and the second a writer of dungeons and dragons knockoff novels of forgotten realms, also a Tolkien re-writer.

The third a successful science fiction writer and one of the best star wars writers until the crap that was mindor.

Episodes II and III not only needed less yes men, and help from other writers and directors but a hell of a lot more drafts of the scripts.  Episode 1 despite what people think of it took as long as the original star wars did, and almost as many drafts.  Three rather than five?

The second and third seem to be hastily sketched as if directed and written from the art department.  Lazy Lucas, was Lazy.

If he could not give star wars the treatment it deserved and not phoned in hack work garbage, then he should have left well enough alone.  Except ego and lack of funds got control.  Such hits like howard the duck and young indiana jones, lol.  That what made him return to wars not love of the material.

Xbox 360 or PS3 - Which is better? - Advice......
Time

To me the 360 is the better console because i can play both Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII on it.  The only thing the PS3 had for me to be forced to buy it was final fantasy XIII.

Now that Sony screwed that up as an exclusive, what do they have that is so great god of war III and Metal Gear 4.  Only 2 games not worth it for me.  I can also get dragon age origins on the 360 as well.  Best rpg system by far is the 360.

360 has better online and content and better and more games.  PS3 better graphics if you own an HDTV which i don't and blu ray, a waste of money.

If you can afford both systems or all the major systems as a gamer including a gaming rig PC then there is no problems with fanboyism.  Me i can only afford one system.

Things you like/need that they've discontinued
Time

You know what i miss.  Films shot on real film.

Films with real acting, real scripts and directing. Films without wall to wall greenscreen and cgi. Films without Shakey Cam and lens flares and quick cuts and some actual story and plot.

Films with real stunts and pyrotechnics.  Real Models, matte paintings and sets and location shooting.  Real technicians and craftsmen who were masters of their art and not raised on video games and music videos.

"Distinct resemblences to the prequals" in the use of CGI and other modern techniques, or resemblence in that you don't like either?

Reduction of emotional depth and feeling of involvement, increase in silliness, reduction of sense of danger, plastic visual style.

Yeah, because Temple of Doom is just overflowing with emotional depth and lacks silliness like mine car chases, eating bugs, or musical numbers.

Using Temple of Doom the worst of the old films to defend Crystal Skull does not work.  That was when the indy franchise first jumped the shark, before it nuked the fridge.

Lots of Bad jokes in Last Crusade too, but that was a very good film anyways and brought us back to the spirit of Raiders.  Sean Connery also lifted that film out of the mundane by his great performance.

The best parts of doom are the leftovers from the raiders script  the shanghai sequence and the mine cart sequence both conceived by Kasdan.  The rest is plain garbage.  I love a a couple of films the Huycks worked on temple is not one of them, neither is howard the duck or radioland murders.

As for defending Crystal Skull i have defended its better parts.  But there are still a lot of bad parts to outweigh the good. If you look at what worked and what did not with these and the star wars prequels.  Remove those bad elements or rework them to make them better you have much better movies.

As a kid there were only 2 indiana jones movies and i thought doom was better which do you think as an adult i find better.  Raiders of course.  I thought raiders was boring as a kid as i did empire strikes back and loved return of the jedi.  Last Crusade came out when i was almost a teenager 11 at the time. Saw it twice in theaters. Best movie  of 1989 by far.  Way better than shitty ghostbusters II, Burtons batman, or star trek V.

If Harrison and Steven can ground Lucas sillyness then they could make part V take a lot of the bitter taste leftover from IV.  Maybe this time they will make a film like raiders or crusade instead of something that makes temple of crap look like a masterpiece.

My answer bring back Lawrence Kasdan to write the screenplay if it sucks hire someone else, but it can't hurt to try since the best indy film was written by him. Second best written by Jeffrey Boam who i believe has passed away, sadly. Next choice would have been Frank Darabount, but his script for crystal skull sucked badly.  I can't believe Koepp could write a better script, but in this instance his was better.

Too late to make the Spear of Destiny movie.  That should have been the follow up to last crusade.  The comic was better than INDY IV. Featured a real historical artifact not Aliens, and Nazis instead of Russians. They should have made this in the 90's. That or make the Atlantis or Excalibur movie.  But Aliens worst idea ever seriously.

Best Films to come out of LFL limited The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark neither of which Lucas directed. Empire directed by Kershner, Raiders by Spielberg.

Best Screenplays to come of of Lucasfilm Raiders and Empire written by Lawrence Kasden and not George Lucas.

There was a book that came out that said Lucas gave Marquand a hard time on return on the jedi and was a total a-hole and a backseat director, much like i picture him on crystal skull.

One of the most famous stories is how Lucas took empire away from kersh and recut it as told in once upon a galaxy, and it was a total mess, and hackwork.

If i was a filmaker he is the last person on earth i would want to work with collaboratively.  The word must have gotten around hollywood since none of the non union directors would touch return of the jedi except for Marquand.

Lynch turned it down probably because he heard the horror stories of what was done to Kershner.  Also no wonder nobody wanted to direct any of the prequels, everyone George asked turned him down.

A good deal of the humanity of his films came from Marcia Lucas.  The best parts of star wars and American Graffiti came from Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz.

You know what is funny is i remember reading an old book and it described Lucas as a cold tecnobrat, technocrat would have suited him better and been scarily prophetic over the 90% cgi films with  a lack of humanity in the characters and so on.

This book was written before Lucas expressed a philosophy of special effects in the documentary from star wars to jedi that made common sense.  But Lucas now is on the other side of what he said back then.

If he stuck with his less is more philosophy, characters before effects, the universe once used simplicity maybe the prequels and indy IV would have not suffered this mentality of the carriage before the horse.

He also should have stuck to the idea of handing the other star wars movies over to other writers and directors.

I have come to believe the greatness of the first star wars came out of true collaboration between many artists and a great deal of adversity.  Had Lucas an unlimited budget and cgi in 1977 what we would have got would be crap like Episode 1.  The film would have bombed and today nobody would Know who George Lucas is besides the success of American Graffiti as small footnote in American culture.
