That was a good way to ruin both the Fantastic Four franchise and insure no movie for Silver Surfer ever gets made.

They are set to reboot or remake Fantastic Four.

Hopefully this time they follow Jack Kirby's original and have an actress who can act and not just look good.  Alba was painfully awful to watch when she opened her mouth.  In she stayed silent for those 2 films they would have been better, lol.

I had wished that Marvel would get the rights back to Spider-man, fantastic four and x-men, not so sure now that disney owns marvel.

I'm already seeing something awful like the X-men meet Hannah Montana.

He has something to do with it.  I think the splitscreen thing was his idea as was the helicopter scene which he directed second unit for, based on his idea for Apocalypse Now that he never could make since Francis made his version which distorted Lucas original vision for the project.   Took Lucas years to forgive him.

I don't get the big fuss about Graffiti.

I guess you've never had your house tagged.

Grrr. ;)

CGI has no place in American Graffiti. It was not there in the original release. I don't appreciate it in THX 1138 or Star Wars trilogy or Raiders of the Lost ark either.  Whats next willow?

The Lucas craze with CGI may have started on young indy but at least there it was used to extend shots and sets, and augment the story as another tool rather than the whole thing.  Even on Episode 1 this was the case despite cgi Jar Jar.  Next thing episode II was shot on video and used all cgi and so did 3 and was overly fake.

Sounds like more great glitches from the rockstar people, man how many where there in all the gta games, lol.

Maybe you got a bad disc?

I kid you not, my copy of san adreas on the ps2 was broken by a glitch and won't even load, lol.

Still not as bad as ones i found in mass effect 1 like getting stuck after saving in the elevator and having to start the whole game over, or commander shepperd getting into an elevator on the normandy only to fall through space, lol. Or that glitch with the frame rate, or bad ai on teamates that they supposedly were going to fix in the pc version.

Then there is the glitches i found in fable 2.  Seriously i wonder how the people paid as testers even have jobs. Rush those games out the door nobody will notice until it breaks their game.

Correct viewing order of ALL official Star Wars related movies / series ?
Time

I never saw the 1-6 HD broadcast  so i cannot comment on it.

To me if i must watch the prequels this is the viewing order.

4-6 oot

1-3 prequels typically the theatrical versions which are not dvd quality.

I found that the prequels were a lot more enjoyable as a complete media experience as stand alone movies they fail, Lucas is a terrible writer.  The novelizations which are also unabridged audiobooks, the comics and other fill in the blanks EU.  Which again would not have been necessary if Lucas hired a team of writers on the movies.

Conceptually the prequels are not bad.  Lucas played to his strengths which are primarily the visuals.  The Characters needed to be more well fleshed out.  In the movies they are more vehicles for a concept and Lucas musing on Religion and Politics than they are real characters.

I mean he probably had a very basic outline that said certain characters did certain things.  Lets pretend the outline was 3 pages long, has to create a background story that fits with what we know from the other 3 films and add exposition.

The prequels feel very hastily sketched out, at least episodes II and III are that way.  I know Lucas spent a lot more time on pondering episode 1 and writing its script, which the final result does not show.

Star Wars 1977

The Empire Strikes Back 1980

Return of the Jedi 1983.

The rest of the stuff is just add on material to me its no more canon star wars than any sort of expanded universe material.  Which would include the 1997 and 2004 butchering of 3 classic movies, and those prequel movies.

The elements are their in a sort of static form in the prequels but were not fleshed out.  The success of the prequels hinged on the characterization and portrayal of Anakin in episodes II and III, but ultimately what we got was a bad performance and rediculous point a to point b in the script and utter nonsense and the turn to the dark side made no sense. If the reason to go bad was to save his wife why is his first act to kill her WTF?

She was Pregnant with his child/children and he goes to choke her to death, i'll save you by killing you, lol.

If Hayden's inability to pull off a performance was bad enough with no help from Lucas and the greenscreen backdrop, Padme dies of a broken heart was the most dumb thing ever.

Episode II was just plain bad but revenge of the sith invalidated return of the jedi.  Therefore i must pretend it was not a star wars movie.

Also it makes no sense why he would not kill the emperor for tricking him into such an alliance if his wife died why stick around with Palpaptine.  I would have killed the bastard when i woke up from that operating table and heard him laughing about her death. Oh other than the fact that it was in the script for the other three movies to happen but dramatically it fails to work.

Only just discovered this online stash of all the cool Russ Manning Sunday strips. I still think this stuff was closest to the spirit and fun of the original movie. http://dailysw.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Constancia%20Affair

Those were chopped up and reprinted as comic book panels in star wars the early adventures and like the al williamson reprints the sundays were recolored and the old colors were lost.  I think they only got black and white photostats or in the case of williamson they shot it off his original artwork.

Russ Manning's best was Magnus Robot fighter.

I liked his star wars but the best artwork and stories were apparently ghostwritten and drawn by others while he was ill. Like the Boba Fett story.

One of the stories was published under a fake name and never reprinted.

Some of the newspaper strips were done by Alfredo Alcala like the adaptation of Han Solo at stars end.

Batman 1989

And Batman Returns great movies,lol.

I don't think you can put any Tim Burton film in that category except maybe Nightmare before Christmas or Edward Scissorhands.

I found his batman to be too bizarre, though it was better than shusucker's batman and robin and overrated Forever.

The only Batman films i think are any good are batman begins, the dark knight and the animated film Mask of the Phantasm.  Batman 1989 holds some nostalgia and the score by Danny Elfman is great, returns had Michelle Pheiffer as the standout role.  The only thing i hate about the first film is the hammy acting of Nicholson you think he going to break into a "here's johhny" and The Prince music is out of place where a symphonic score should have been used.  Also The actress who played vicky vale was horrible.  That same chick was in never say never again, lol.

I read a review that said the second Bioshock was good but not as good as the first or as shockingly innovative.  Seems to be a fair review unlike the fanboy adoration of ME2 which is a very good game but story wise not as good as the first but has better gameplay mechanics.

I just hope Arkham Asylum 2 is as good as the first but sequels are almost never better than the first except in the case of Empire Strikes Back.

I am probably one of the people that does not like the direction they went with in the second mass effect game.  Played up the shooter elements and played down the rpg and exploration parts. If i wanted to play halo or gears of war of would play those and not mass effect.  Damn EA.  I knew something like this would happen.  Well there is always DragonAge Origins, and final fantasy XIII to look forward to.

Damn though the second time bioware screwed things up on creating a perfect trilogy.  Last time was Kotor by handing off the second game to Obsidian and some crappy mmo replaced the third game.

Plus the characters in ME2 don't act like the same people from the first game, and they listened to the whiners about the mako and hard sci fi elements and dumbed it down for the 5 second attention span people who thought the new star trek was the kewlest evah!.LOL.

If i wanted a dumb action game ala GTA in space i would not be playing a mass effect game.  They ruined mass effect the same way Lucas has ruined star wars and indiana jones, bay has ruined transformers and jj has ruined star trek.

Second greatest upset in recent years.  No way did this top the Patriots losing to Peyton's brother and the Giants though.

Colts now can join the blowing the perfect season losers club.

But in Tom's case hes more happy being a player off the field, lol.

Should hang out with Tiger Woods, lol.

If he won he would have Tied Benny from Steel city, but will he ever beat Aikmen or Brady with 3, lol.

Both teams of course said to be the biggest cheaters ever.

Peyton still tied with Favre and did he ever throw like Favre in this game, lol. Or is that Drew Bledsoe?

I just love reading the newspaper recently and they said Peyton versus Brady who is better of the last decade, gee the math aint so hard.  Lets see one guy has one and the other three trophies.

Well at least he does not have none like Marino.

The Marvel stuff can't be just categorized all one way. The material varied immensely over the years. Some was more intelligent and some was dumber, but I certainly don't see that newspaper strip was any better in that area. The Marvel stuff was certainly more in tune with the spirit of Star Wars than the 90s eu and Dark Horse stuff. That Marvel didn't fit in with story that Lucas would reveal later doesn't bother me, because I don't have much respect for the story Lucas revealed later. I think it's only reasonable that they include the Marvel stuff in their canon, considering they've included so much modern shit and the Marvels are truer to the Spirit of Star Wars.

True at least their was no Jar Jar and Hayden Anakin/Vader yet.

Now they were even in the comics and they tried to keep Anakins likeness in the comics as close to hayden as possible.  Also whiny emo douche in the comics too, in between being a leader of the clone troops and jedi.

The Marvel stuff was conceived before darth vader was Luke's Father, and Leia was Luke's sister.  Luke had a jedi father who was killed by Darth Vader and Leia was a possible love interest because she was not his sister.

The first authorized official non canon EU sequels to star wars happened in marvel even before the splinter of the minds eye novel was published.  Of course star wars 77 would be changed in empire strikes back and return of the jedi.  The father and sister thing irritates those who see only star wars as canon. They hate the sequels and pretend they never happened the same as prequel haters and special edition haters.

I thought he opinion was all the prequel character are like cardboard cutouts and don't stand out as people, and are one dimensional which i agree with by the way.  I disagree with his views of avatar and star trek.  But he was spot on for a lot of episode 1's crimes against real star wars.

I did not really like Liam as Qui Gon.  Which is interesting because he was good in Schindlers List, and Rob Roy.  He had the same problem as all the prequel jedi to me.  Like you said once the jedi in the prequels were prententiousness striking poses, and i agree with that.

Mace, Yoda, Obi Wan, Qui Gon.  Qui Gon may be the least of these but still not oot concept of the jedi.  In fact he was a new character who never was outlined in the oot of prequels outlined which we never saw, lol.

I thought Macgregor did an excellent Job with what he was given to work with in revenge of the sith, but it really is not a mark against him he could not pull off Alec Guiness, what actor could?

I thought he was awful in the first 2 prequels though.  Also the Jedi were smug and arrogant and unlikeable wanting to make you hate them and cheer on the order 66 killings.

The worst idea of all was making Hayden Skywalker a jedi master in the clone wars cartoon, just amazingly stupid.  Even if voiced by someone else than hayden that is not Anakin Skywalker so why i distinguish him as hayden skywalker.

Of all the characters ruined.  The treatment of yoda in all three was awful, especially in II and III.  And III made the Emporer into such a bad cartoon joke that made return of the jedi's over acting oscar worthy.

Stupid to give the Emperor and Yoda lightsabers.  Just for more pointless lightsaber duels.

I meant in terms of art style the marvel comics were awful.  Some were drawn with that bad marvel superhero style rather than the golden age comic style of EC comics and Flash Gordon, that Lucas wanted. Even the scripts were bad and juvenile clearly aimed at children.  Star Wars then had limited stories, and kids imagined stuff with their action figures.

The universe was not well drawn out and the marvel extrapolation was almost always wrong since Lucas did not have any involvement with the comic beyond whether or not Marvel kept the contract.  I think Dark Horse did an overall better job, just like they did a better job than marvel with indiana jones.

The best marvels were written or produced by Archie Goodwin supposedly.  i have very little knowledge of his work beyond the newspaper comics.

Adding Lumiya to me was almost as bad as black hole from the pre williamson newspaper strips.  Again Lucas never outlined the nature of the dark side and the sith.  Even the Eu up into the 90's got it wrong with calling them all dark jedi since at the time only vader was a sith Lord.  Sidious was not the emporer at the time since their was only 1 darth.

But the Legacy novels and shadows of mindor very badly i might say retconned marvel and the pre williamson stuff back into the main EU canon.  Which marvel never was a part of or was thrown out of canon due to its sillyness like the holiday special. Their was no overlapping between the novels and comics and movies like we have now, or any sort of cross continuity.

This has to do mainly with the bottom line that FC is a film with very good drama, acting and characters. It doesn't mesh well with the series, which is his main point, but the ST continuity is so constricted that I find the ones that deviate the most are the best because of this--they give a chance to re-invent and go with what works best for the drama, rather than honoring a million references in the hundreds of episodes that pre-date it.

His biggest gripes seemed to be about Picard's character, which is a very valid point. He is WAY out of character in all the films. Instead of the Earl Grey sipping, classic listening, diplomacy over violence, intellect over muscle character he is in the TV series, they have turned him into an action hero. And there are actually less than a handful of Borg episodes in the entire run of The Next Generation (I think there are six Borg episodes, if you count two part episodes as two episodes, and only four episodes if you don't), so you don't really have to dig through a whole lot of material to see how silly it is that Picard has suddenly grown an intense desire for revenge on the Borg after only a few years earlier he made a concious decision that it would be wrong to introduce a virus into the collective that would wipe them out.

This was done on Patrick Stewarts urging that Picard be a swashbuckler in the films.  Why do they listen to actors remember star trek V.

They basically turned him into a Kirk like character.  Maybe it was the influence of Kirk in Generations, but that would be quite a stretch, or his experience being borged changed him as a person.

Actually as a cadet if i remember Picard was like Kirk, even a bit like Kirk from the new movie. Fighting Nausicans in bars and remancing women.

I still dont see why you guys are going on about the "humor" in this review.  We are here to discuss the Star Wars movies and ways to make them better.  Not here to discuss a fan edit of a hardly known, fan-made review of TPM.  Lets take his good points out of his review, and move them into dicussion on this thread.  Who cares about the other stuff.

If anything, we should all be glad he made this review, its a little step toward a potenial watchable edit of TPM.  ;)

Kind of ironic in the course of the years this forum has gone from "trying to preserve Star Wars how it originally was, flaws and all" to "trying to make Star Wars better".

Forgot some people were still on about making a watchable edit of TPM. Trust me, with the edits already available, it has gotten as watchable as it ever will. And even that is not enough for me to ever want to watch it again (and I have made it no secret that it is my absolute favorite PT film).

Making Menace a good film rather than just a tolerably meh crap film, good luck with that.  There is zero chance since it is supposed to be done at the writing stage of the script, and the choice of directors and actors.

Could the prequels be redone by Better directors, writers and actors, yes.  Wood i care to watch them probably not the original prequels would have already ruined the experience for me.

Like fans wanting the original trilogy made and rebooted for a modern mindset to make them cooler and hip with the teen crowd like JJ did with Star Trek i would totally boycott any such attempt.  I mean they would probably have Shia Lebouf as Han Solo, and either Hayden Christensen or Chris Pine for Luke Skywalker and there would be shaky cam and lens flares and lots of flashy video game graphics. Leia would be played by Keira Knightly, or Natalie Portman, or worse case scenario Megan Fox,lol.

The only comics that got the spirit of the films right, which was Flash gordon by Alex Raymond influenced are the newspaper strips by Al Williamson and Archie Goodwin.  The rest of them except the comic adaptations stunk.

George was unhappy with everything but Williamson's work.  Probably one of the reasons marvels contract did not get renewed.

The dark empire and vughan vong idea originated at marvel.  But dark empire was delayed so long and then picked up by dark horse, and the Vong bad aliens invade thing was re-used in the eu novels and later in a spinoff comic.

Stealing An Idea from Frink. Who is the Better Producer Lucas or Spielberg?
Time

Well his daughter the younger one i think leads the writing staff of clone wars.  The other one a sort of famous mmo fighter.

His son not sure if he will ever be a director.

Spielberg's kids what have they done.  Never heard of anything except his son urging indiana jones IV and look how that turned out.

The possibility of Lucas kids directing or writing the next star wars film series is probably non existent considering its probably written into his will their will be no more than six films and that the oot remain buried.

You mean like having the idea for something and having someone better write and direct it.  Lucas used to be a good idea generator, and with other directors and writers put out excellent collaborative work.

Other than that his reputation as a director can be called into question since he only directed 3 good films and 3 very bad turkeys 1 a film and the others videos that looked like games.

Even his reputation as a financer of other films, and as an executive producer or producer can be called into question.

What has he done of any merit film culture beyond the original star wars and indiana jones trilogies?  And he directed only 1 of those.

Graffiti and Thx are seperate issues to me because they are more like extensions of his student film days.

Reboot the EU
Time

The best answer is to decanonize the special editions and the prequels, and go back and use the original films as inspiration for new EU material.

The modern stuff comes from the bad prequel mentality.

Hell i even prefer Jaxxon the Bunny over Jar Jar Binks.

Jar Jar was bad enough but Hayden Vader/Anakin and dumb Padme were enough to make me want to throw rocks at the theater screen.

Any star wars projects Lucas has had a direct say in or connection to have sucked since post return of the jedi.  I mean it might sound wrong but the dude needs to be fired from his own creation since he is the problem.

To me the Zahn Trilogy was a great era for the EU.  I made me want to see more star wars films.  Instead my childhood memories were trodden upon with garbage looney tune style characters, bad cgi and even worse 1 dimensional characters and nonsense plots, and a almost deliberate break from continuity of the oot. If there was anything i could undue in star wars it would be the special editions and the prequels.  Made star wars into a fucking joke and for what to make money?

If not for the Legacy comics and Kotor series and sometimes a good eu novel here or there i would have parted ways with star wars forever because Lucas is still destroying star wars.  With the Clone Wars cgi toon, the upcoming live actions series and that awful force unleashed and its sequel.  Everything now is a branching off of the bad prequels even the EU.

Star Wars is forever ruined and tarnished.  Its deserved legacy is compromised, if that is not bad enough the real original films are buried never to see the light of day again, ever.

Other fans probably have developed an imaginary time machine in their minds where they can go back before 1997 and unruin star wars.

Me i will never forget.  Lucas destroyed his own legacy.  Now his legacy is cgi.  lets see if that lasts 30  years or more, lol.

This thread should be called erase the Prequel Trilogy from Existence, that would solve the EU problem halfway already.
