Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

None of either trilogy will be any theatrical version.

no oot 77-83

no 70mm version of empire

no special edition 97

no theatrical prequels, also excluding the imax cut of attack of the clones and the different 35mm and dlp cuts of the film.

So why would any fan of the oot, the special editions from 1997, or the prequels be happy with this blu ray?

Also they probably won't be the same as the 2004 cuts either or the same prequel DVD's, the sound mix with be different or it we be an entirely different version of the film like Phantom menace being cut number 3 if it was re-color timed and cgi yoda added.

I don't even like the prequels and yet the versions i find to be even remotely watchable are the theatrical cuts like Phantom Menace.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Preview and Reviews

So  is it more original trilogy like, or more like the hated prequels?

I liked the first game when it referenced the oot but hated the references to those prequels which i don't consider star wars movies at least when judged with the real original trilogy from 1977-1983.

I have quite enjoyed the writing of Hayden Blackman however through the years especially at dark horse comics, the republic mini series had the kind of serious storytelling and human quality that was lacking in those cgi fests called movies.

What would be better than a proper release of the OOT?
Time

If george added needless extra garbage scenes to the prequels and released them in laserdisc quality non anamorphic on DVD as Bonus Discs to some new fangled version with JAR JAR in every scene.

Or better yet if the prequels were buried and withheld while the negatives or HD camera records, disintegrate or the data goes on the blink.

How about there is an accidental fire that destroys all copies of them, lol.

Jon Stewart hour long interview with George Lucas at CV
Time

I watched the Lucas thing same bs about the story of Darth Vader tragedy and redemption being the first screenplay he wrote, and the crap that Vader was the father. More stupid stuff about adding cgi to meet his vision when none of those scenes were in the final shooting script, except the Jabba scene and that was cut for good reason.  Tells the same info as the Greedo scene and is redundant.

There is plenty of information from old interviews to refute Lucas having it all written from the get go.

The part where he jokingly says he made it up as he went, is the actual truth.

What's missing from GOUT
Time

The film grain is missing, and the fine detail.  They used some sort of grain/dirt concealment on the laserdisc master it is much worse on the gout DVD.  I find star wars to be unwatchable.  The worst scenes are the tatooine scenes filmed in tunisia.  They are not even optical effects there to account for the low image quality, just a shoddy transfer that is inexcusable in 2006 tech.

I will refuse to buy STAR WARS on bluray!
Time

Who care about the audio codec used when it won't be the original versions of the movies.  That should be the reason to boycott the release, although Matthew Wood doing the sound design means it will be pretty awful anyways, regardless of DTS or Dolby.  He remixed star wars in 5.1 on the 2004 dvd and it was shit.  So bad that a fan had to sync the 1997 laserdisc ac3 to the DVD,lol.

So who was responsible for the Audio since the first 85 remix?

Like the music editor, the mix supervisor.  Burtt is the sound fx guy.

Surely it's 4,000 years- not 40,000...  doesn't this explain why it's so similar?  ;)

It is actually 3,650 years before Star Wars .A New Hope to those who came on the scene late, i still call it star wars.

The Jedi Mandalorean war is mentioned to have been fairly recent in the book.  I am wondering where in the timeline does the game take place.

Maybe the war mentioned in the book is not the one i am thinking of, the one where Revan and Malak fight the mandaloreans .

It would be nice for someone to make a old republic guide that fits the Veich/anderson stuff, with the first two kotor games, the kotor comic, the online comics for the old republic and the printed one, and the game so we know when all this stuff takes place.

Not sure what else will be retconned i watched one of those holorecord things and it mentioned Bastila Shan was a jedi master.  She never was in the game she was a knight without a padawan.

The book is better than that awful time travel book that came out recently, but just barely rises above tie in fiction.

Tie in fiction for an mmo, based on the film franchise.  We have yet to be told the level of canon of the Old Republic or George's involvement.  Is it regular EU or a special case like the clone wars cartoon series and the force unleashed games which are either G-canon or just below that because of Mr. Lucas involvement.

New Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 3 Trailer
Time

It could have been worse like Jar Jar's brother was revealed, lol.

Maul's race are not exclusively Sith some have been Jedi.

They could have just introduced another of his race as a sith apprentice, Maul having a brother is something ridiculous only Lucas could have come up with, or fanboys.

Why would they emperor need Anakin/Vader if he has another Maul.

The clone wars has consistently crapped all over continuity even more so than the prequels which is surprising.

I have for the most part enjoyed the animated series a lot more than i did the prequels which were garbage.  See if other writers and artists are involved star wars is better, what ever was crap about clone wars i attribute to Lucas solely.  The people making these are fans of the old films you can see the love is clearly there.

I mean even bioware's star wars EU stuff is better than anything Lucas has done since before after 1983 for star wars.

Return of the Jedi 70mm for sale
Time

I have seen a print in 70mm a single reel go for 300 hundred bucks for jedi.  It was faded, scratched and the audio was out of sync due to the original mag track being warped or shrunk.

Their is a fan out there who once mentioned on some 8mm forum that he has a copy in fair condition of the whole movie and screened it in his own home theater for 70mm. I think he said it was the original and not the even more rare special edition 70mm.  I think there were only like 2 places in the world that had that one place in the USA i think the egyptian theater premiere, and a royal uk premiere.

Someone on ebay sold an empire print that was almost complete 1 reel at a time.  I think the dude was a projectionist at a closed down theater, and they were just going to dumpster or cut up the prints so he rescued them.  Even stored in perfect conditions for over 29 years they faded to pink.  The great Eastman pre LPP stock, lol.

There were alternate audio takes on star wars 77 70mm, and jedi 83 70mm but not different cuts of the film.  Empire 1980 70mm premiere is the rarest because it had alternate audio and was an earlier cut of the film.

Some of that different audio was on the super8mm version of the film and matches up with scenes found on Don Gluts novelization.

I skimmed through the videos as well, and I'm a little dumbfounded at how awkward and trite the whole thing with Lucas was. (I'm also confused as to why Stewart was there, since I've never gotten the impression he was a SW fan, lol).

Anyway, it's basically Lucas just plugging his latest stuff... Mark comes out to introduce the ROTJ clip, and then Carrie comes on, cracks a couple jokes, and then it's over. Seriously. That's it? What a massive disappointment. It would've been interesting to have more time to actually talk to Mark and Carrie instead of resorting to cameos. Or did they have separate interviews?

Because of the Daily Show bit where he interviewed Lucas and Lucas plugged his book Blockbusting which he did not even write, lol.

The stuff with Hamill is cool though.  I wonder if they will have mark as a commentary on  the blu ray he was not on the 2oo4 dvd set.

Return of the Jedi cut-scene
Time

This scene was shot according to the making of return of the jedi book.

I hope the sandstorm scene is on there as well, maybe the vader trying to kill Jejjerod too.

The lightsaber construction scene is pretty awesome though is that the same saber as shot in Jambe's returning to jedi mark hamill is seen working on in that shot?

This scene made it into the radio drama and i think the shadows of the empire novelization but i might be wrong on that since i have not read it since 1996.

How much was deleted from empire strikes back in terms of footage.  All l know is there were a bunch of alternate takes and camera angles on some shots.  Other than the deleted wampa stuff.

And what about star wars lost cut that should be in as a bonus, but Lucas is too lazy so it won't be on the blu ray.  I do hope it includes the never released longest version of Empire of dreams.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I am sure many fans will be torn on whether to buy this release just for the deleted scenes.  But to me it is nothing short of rewarding Lucas for his desecration of film history.

Some positives will come out of this i am sure, just not the oot.  Like widespread adoption of the blu ray format.  It will make a killing in sales will probably sell out in pre-orders.

I am surprised it is happening the way it is though because Lucas wanted a 3-D release of the films to co-incide with the 30th ann. of star wars of course never happened and a 3-D release on blu ray afterward.

He wanted to do the live action show but found it was cost prohibitive.

Star Wars is really only going strong in the comics, videogames and animated series.  As well as in print.

I think Lucas talking about pipeline for things, he was really saying he is focused on the release of that Tuskegee airman movie he made.  Then next year the blu ray of star wars.

“Releasing the originals is kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good. You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally. It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”

...meh

From the same multi billionaire Lucas who has put the live action show on hold because it costs too much.  He is a billionaire yet cannot put the originals on blu ray.

I knew he would not relent. I am telling all my family and friends to boycott this release.  He basically just gave the finger too all the original fans.  With any other franchise this would be mean war.  But since it is Lucas the sycophants will kiss his butt and make excuses for him.

Its even worse when you consider he is putting the deleted scenes from the real versions of the movies on the blu ray, without the actual films themselves it is fucking apeshit crazy.

I cannot believe that people paid money to go to celebration V and actually cheered on the desecration of a iconic series of films, they cheered that the originals are suppressed and forever buried.  Man i really dislike TFN and Luca$h at the moment.

I would also suspect that these are the 1080p masters of the DVD's and no restoration or rescanning was undertaken.  The exact same as broadcast except with HD audio and better quality.

"These are not the versions of the films you are looking for. Move along, move alone".

So they put in everything but the kitchen sink for extras yet the films that made the legend are not included only the 2004 versions also side by side with those star wars movies that are not star wars movies the prequels.

Also no audio fixes, color fixes, no theatrical prequels or the 1997 special edition star wars trilogy.

Basically the same damn thing already on DVD.  Crap, just crap.

Lucas is basically upholding the same company line  that they had Lynne hale tell people i won't even bother looking for it.  But i am sure it is on these forums someplace.

Save Star Wars Dot Com

Zombie i read your article on the 2004 special edition and it is just plain embarrassing they passed off those mistakes as "deliberate creative decisions"

The part about the emperor's new clothes looking so good made me laugh out loud, because it is too true of later day Lucasfilm sycophants.

It is even more pathetic of Lucasfilm when you realize a fan like adywan corrected a lot of the 2004 mistakes in his revisited a new hope.

A multi billion dollar corporation with more computing power than NASA cannot get a set of DVD's right, but a fan with a home computer and simple off the shelf software can.

I just downloaded the Angrysvn preservation of THX 1138 from laserdisc and it looked fine, but could use improvement. It wasn't anamorphic, either, which made me sad.

Just to let you know, I am in the process of making an Avisynth-script to fix the combed frames on it caused by being hard-telecined I guess and I am also going to improve the overall contrast/colors, making it anamorphic, so it can at least be watchable until a better option appears. If you're interested I can perhaps upload it for you when it's done.

EDIT: Forget about it, it's just not worth it. Even though I manage to improve the video, it looks awful. I also noticed that the audio is out of sync, this version really sucks! Now, I'm really desperate to find a watchable version...

The last laser release was a japan release with japanese subtitles hardcoded beneath the widescreen picture.  Never been able to find out if it is the censored japan cut or the uncut us cut,  And i think it came out in 1994.  Was also reported to have a better picture than the us release, but since i have never seen it i just consider that hearsay.

details here.

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/13001/NJWL-11162/THX-1138-%281971%29

I'm not sure since i don't own it but i think this is where the cgi opening shot of american graffiti originated it is a 1998 laserdisc release called the signature collection.

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/11036/42725/American-Graffiti-%281973%29

The first widescreen letterbox release on laserdisc came out in 1996, if anyone has this can they confirm if it is the original version?

http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/07157/42726/American-Graffiti-%281973%29

All the previous releases came from the same pan and scan master as the discovision release, pretty dodgy quality but still better than the non remastered original vhs.
