Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Too bad nobody has scored a 16mm print of jedi like that pristine one offered on the 8mm forum boards for 16mm films.

I don't have that kind of money or i would have been the first one to contact the person offering the print.

My only problem would have been even if i had the money are these foreign prints with the english audio re-recorded from laserdisc or DVD.

The dubious origin printed in the 1990's ?

The only real print i know of that is authentic is the derann films super8mm release as they had the rights to produce them for a limited time from Lucasfilm.  Taken from a 35mm release print with the sound in a mono fold down of the theatrical stereo.

Film collecting is a rather fun hobby but requires a lot of money, you need the equipment to screen them and the space.  Biggest problem is storage to prevent age and slow down vinegar syndrome.

Even if properly stored there is no guarantee if the stock is Eastman pre-lpp .  The guy who had the empire 70mm prints on ebay i think had his stored in a cool dry place for over twenty years and they still turned to pink.

How many times have you bought the movies?
Time

I have lost track really.  I don't have the super8mm from Ken Films, or super8mm full prints or 16mm reductions.  But pretty much have every usa NTSC Vhs release.  Every DVD release , all the domestic lasers exept for the 1989 widescreen.  Japan initial defninitive release, and special collections.  Even phantom menace on laser with burnt in subs cause it was the only decent theatrical release, the vhs was crap.

Star Wars was just my kind of story growing up, i love the original movies more than any film ever made, except for Lord of the rings.  i have so many copies of that on DVD but not so close to star wars.  I have bought star trek films in very many formats too, as well as indiana jones and back to the future.

Actually i loved the films in my childhood but never had a vcr then.   Only sometimes saw then on HBO over at my dad's house who had cable.

It was not until many years after that i became a superfan which i blame on the Zahn Trilogy which totally hooked me in. Which i read the first two volumes of in eighth grade.

It was High School really when i became a fanatic fan of Lucas and StarWars basically the age of the internet, and also the Jedi Bendu starkiller page shares a lot of blame for rekindling my passion for the hobby.

Your first reaction to Hayden is ROTJ
Time

Hoth-Nudist said:

I first saw Hayden superimposed over shaw during an airing of ROTJ on spikeTV.  I wanted to kick in the screen and went through 5 minutes of expletives directed at Luca$.  I hated the SE's, but these further changes just tore me apart.  I still havent seen the latest greedo vs han change where lucas has them shooting about the same time instead of greedo shooting 1st like the SE's. And I really dont want to.  Lucas even wore a "han shot 1st" t-shirt around the set of indiana jones KOTCS.  And I hate how lucas is repetitively letting SpikeTV air these SE 2.0 abominations!  Its like he's trying to get people to forget the OOT by shoving this garbage trilogy down our throats!

It is even funnier when you realize hayden was only 2 when jedi was released in 1983,lol.  And he was always intended to play that part, Lucas is either trying to pull the wool over our eyes, or a huge joker.

Boycott Star Wars on Blu-ray
Time

"When I see a proper OOT DVD release from Lucasfilm, I will become a fan again. Until then, I have no interest in spending a dime on any of their products."

Love your quote by the way Mike.

I feel the same way exactly and that is why i don't have Indiana Jones IV on DVD, or the music CD, posters or anything.

I won't buy a prequel or special edition boxed set either.

What's the beef with Prowse?
Time

Told TFN on their forcecast that Lucas never paid him royalties for return of the jedi because the bean counters said it never turned a profit.

Then he participated in the people vs george.  Someone said here on these forums Mark Hamill was threatened with a similar banning as Prowse if he talked to them.

I think Lucas has someone who keeps tabs on people like TFN and filmakers like the guy who directed the people versus george.  Speaks of almost a galaxy sized ego and control of his personal image.  Remember he allededly tried to destroy Dale Pollock for telling the truth in Skywalking.

I would love for Lucas to try and ban Hamill.  You think oot fans are up in arms about their being no originals on the blu ray, you aint seen nothing if he threatens Luke Skywalker.  Every Lucas product would be boycotted, at least by me on principle alone.

Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?
Time

Moth3r did a capture of the French laserdisc in pal i believe.  It was the 1995 THX transfer.

They are on single layer dvd'rs.

You can see his results on the screenshot thread.  Though they probably look a lot better in motion.

I think before the gout, moth3r's Star Wars transfer was the best one imho.  Despite pal speedup.

I think they were the only dedicated pal transfer.  Not a ntsc to pal conversion like the first issue UK pan and scan lasers.

I wonder if they simply lost the pal masters, they got thrown out or Lucas/Fox were so lazy they just dumped the NTSC masters to disc after Pal conversion.

Too many directors are fouling up their originals with all this colour-grading nonsense.  It looks like I'll be sticking with more and more DVD originals at this rate...

I agree with you, and there was one hell of an argument when I and others brought this up at Blu-ray.com.  For many there, directors can do no wrong...

I confess that I do actually like the new color timing for Alien.  I watched both color timings back-to-back recently and to my surprise I found I preferred the new one.  It seems more filmic, but less real world to me, so it depends on what you want.

I am in two minds about the new color timing of Bladerunner.  At times it is closer to the workprint than the other cuts, but at other times it is too blue, and I find myself sick of the blue by the end of the film.  When directors recolor-time they never seem to know when enough of one tint is enough.  At least the other cuts have their original color timing on the five-disc set though.

All new transfers of Ridley Scott films seem recolor-timed, including the new master of Gladiator on the Anniversary Edition Blu-ray.  At times the colors look amazing, but generally the new palette is too warm for my taste.  The new master does not have all the DNR of the original though.

As far as Aliens go, both cuts will be on the same disc, so that implies that they will be seamlessly branched.  I think it is a safe bet that they will both use the same color timing, and I am virtually certain it will be different.  Apparently Alien and Aliens are undergoing the Lowry Digital restoration process, but the other two films in the quadrilogy are not.

I am increasingly doing the same.  It might be disappointing, but at least it saves you money!

Lowry and restoration in the same sentence is kind of funny, considering they either apply too much dvnr, or fuck colors up on almost all their DVD's.  I wonder why the Indiana Jones set turned out ok.

The fact they are being involved when they are the ones who botched the star trek blu rays, means i guess i will stick with the DVD's.

If you had your choice, would you have wanted George Lucas to stop after 1977?
Time

CO said:

Since the BluRay announcement of the SE's only last week, many of us here have just put our hands up at Star Wars.  Being a SW fan is the ultimate catch-22.   If you buy the Bluray SE cause you want to still somewhat enjoy the movies, you are funding Lucas and his hatred for the originals.  If you don't buy them and stick with Non-Anamorphic, you are sacrificing yourself to watching a crappy transfer of the movies you love.

So if anyone had the ultimate choice:  If you could go back and time and convince George Lucas to stop making movies after 1977, would you do it?  Now you are giving up Empire and Jedi for all you OT fans, so this is not an easy question.

But we would essentially be getting a BluRay Star Wars movie next year like one of Lawrence of Arabia, Citizen Kane, or Wizard of Oz.  A single classic movie with a great transfer to the original version, with loads of interviews in the context of 1977, remember Vader is not Lukes father now, and no Lucas revisionism.  We wouldn't be arguing about the SE, the PT, is Jedi the start of the downfall of Star Wars?  It would just be the Classic Star Wars that we would all buy, and not think twice about.

Actually i wish he stopped making films after 1989.  Then we would not have made those terrible prequel movies and crystal numbskull.

In terms of film  fans what is worse than being a Lucas fan.  Watching 2 of your favorite film franchises destroyed in a 9 year span of time.

If that was not bad enough he has erased the original versions of his films from existence, from when he made good films.  If that was not bad enough he replaced them with versions with mickey mouse cgi in them, might as well take a crayon to a classic painting.

Basically is comes down to, is the theatrical cut preserved as it was originally released.  Because if they just did this on the extended cut i don't care, but if they are seamless branched meaning both are ruined then i do.

Anyway i care more about how Alien is handled and hope it gets the same treatment as Blade Runner, i hate the directors cut though.

I also don't care what they do for the 3rd or forth film since i would not watch those.

Basically what i want is Alien and Aliens restored from the original negative with the grain intact as shot, but not the dupe grain produced when making a release print.

It find it interesting that the color timing in this scene matches the 70mm cel i have at home fairly closely.  The Blue is almost magenta in mine though, almost purple being a willets designs cel. sort of like this scan that is not mine.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Yeah i am surprised someone has not done a isolated score for Graffiti or THX.  But the change in the forum rules would make that a custom DVD and not allowed.  I guess the only thing allowed is a how to guide if you have the official CD's whether they are out of print or not.

As for the lalo schiffrin score i was under the impression some of it was different on the CD than how it was in the film.

Sorry but unless it is just the extended cut that is effected i will boycott the boxed set.

Here is a quote that basically made me cringe with horror i think he is pulling a Lucas.  Revisionist nonsense.  The film is what you shot with the tech you has at the time not what you wish you had.

"It's spectacular. We went in and completely de-noised it, de-grained it, up-rezzed, color-corrected every frame, and it looks amazing. It looks better that it looked in the theaters originally. Because it was shot on a high-speed negative that was a new negative that didn't pan out too well and got replaced the following year. So it's pretty grainy. We got rid of all the grain. It's sharper and clearer and more beautiful than it's ever looked. And we did that to the long version, to the 'director's cut' or the extended play."
