I will refuse to buy STAR WARS on bluray!
Time

Of course Dts sounds better on DVD because it uses a higher bit rate and less compression than Dolby.

On Blu ray there supposedly is not much of a difference since both are HD audio lossless.

Not the one to really say as i don't have blu ray, but that is what i take out of my online reading.

When playing back ac3 tracks on DVD you have to make sure the dynamic range compression is turned off.  Makes a huge difference even with titles like star wars gout.

DTS was better on DVD when they did full bitrate then they did half.  Many people used to import titles from overseas because the DVD's from Japan would not be half bitrate.  Before the advent of Blu Ray superbit was the way to go for DTS DVD.

Its what i want from star wars but not watered down, and not what i want in star trek.  I don't want Trek to be the same as Wars.  I liked its nerdy uniqueness and ability to question and ponder the deeper mysteries and be a thinking mans sci fi.

As a generic sci fi flick or movie of the week i thought it was great.  But star trek was once more than that at least before the next generation movies when all actioney.

First contact was also one of my fave action sci fi flicks and yet it was a cop out for star trek.  There was very little there, other than reference to Melville's Moby Dick.

Anyway Star Trek 2009 was worth a single viewing but their was nothing there to ponder or chew on on repeated viewings.

I think its the weakest star trek film in terms of message or subtext, very colorful and bright but lacks any additional layers.  Even weaker than First Contact even Nemesis and the Final Frontier had a theme.  Trek 2009 was purely visual eye candy and very Lucas like, not very Roddenberry like.

Fans are unable to stop Lucas from further ruining star wars and Indiana Jones.
Time

I guess you cannot understand the humor and absurdity of a once great filmaker destroying his own films or making a mockery out of these legendary series.   Cannot see the humor in how pathetic both star wars and indiana jones have become.

Still i will have my joke and laugh at how Lucas has gone off the deep end and nuked the fridge.  It is worth a chuckle.

Otherwise things are rather grim, we cannot undo that he has erased the true star wars trilogy from existence or that he committed the greatest atrocity in film history by burying the oot.

He gives JJ crap Trek a pass and a positive review, he obviously has lost his touch.  Why not use the same criticism he used on the prequels on that film, many of the same problems are there.  And the things that work are direct rip offs of star wars 77, empire strikes back.  The things that are huge failures copying nemesis and wrath of khan.

He owns the copyrights and nothing we say will change his mind.

He is he most egotistical of all filmakers, he believes essential in a creators rights which i do also, but at expense of destroying the only good films he ever made.

Thanks to his ego i cannot watch decent original versions of star wars oot trilogy, thx 1138 or American Graffiti.  I can watch the indiana jones trilogy pretty much untampered with and Willow but those were not directed by Him.  Neither were Empire and Jedi but Lucas would disagree.

He will continue to make Bad Prequel stuff and cgi farce Indy pictures because they make money.

Who Felt Return Of The Jedi Was A Letdown At The Time?
Time

Maybe Jedi was where the divide between the oot and the special editions and prequels began, because he finally became a father.  When he made star wars and empire he was not a dad.

Has to be the reason why Crystal Skull feels too safe and Indy is never in any danger.  Lucas became a softy when he aged and became a dad, he started changing his opinion on film violence and self censoring the same can be said of Spielberg who put the walkie talkies in E.T., much like Lucas had greedo shoot.

Peter Jackson's take on film-revisionism on the example of Lord of the Rings
Time

Yes the theatrical cut was restored on a second DVD release, and then anothe restoration was undertaken for the blu ray which they sadly added too much digital video noise reduction too on fellowship.  The other two are good quality if not the best that blu ray can offer.

I hope they fix fellowship on the extended or i will never bother to buy any of the blu rays.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.

Easterhay said:

Obi-Wan is lying to Luke about his father wanting him to have the lightsabre.  Perfectly understandable in the context of what we know now.  And isn't the way Alec Guinnes paused before replying to the question "How did my father die?" just perfect?  It's as though Lucas had told him the backstory on the quiet.

I call bullshit on this.  When star wars was written darth vader was not Lukes father and Obi Wan indeed told the truth.  Empire was the first of many retcons to the saga. In the original backstory kenobi had two pupils Skywalker and Vader.

Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?
Time

I had read the gout came from a D-1 master tape which was better than the later D-2.

Without the bad DVNR smearing the transfer even if in standard def and non anamorphic was pretty good for the time.

I wonder what the source was for the Gout master though.  It is so overly grainy, and the DVNR made it worse by adding a noticeable artifact behind.

Could this has been from one of the duplicate masters, because it obviously is not there on the negative. Even prior to the Lowry clean up the negative was not as grainy as the gout.

Is the faces pan and scan ntsc VHS a different master? i Will have to check sometime to see if the 4-eyed stormtrooper glitch is present.

Biggest letdown was actually a tie between the Phantom Menace, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  I have seen Jedi in theaters at least 3 times and it is one of my favorite films, i really hate it when people claim revenge of the wooden actors is better than Jedi.

In fact the only time i have watched Jedi and wanted to smash something was in 2004 when George inserted Jar Jar and Hayden Skywalker, horrible in the worst kind of way.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Wow the color is pretty stunning for a 16mm print, it really does almost look as good as a 35mm print, maybe better because of no fading.

Now that makes me wonder what the return of the jedi print looked like.

Too bad there was no star wars print like these.

Derann only had star wars and return of the jedi not empire.  The classic home cinema release from what i have read was of medium quality.  With lots of wear being taken from a release print.  Burn marks and scratches, and not the best image quality.  Somewhat murky i think.

Don't know about derann's jedi print, but a new hope aka star wars 77 was supposedly slightly cropped.

As for 70mm prints how many are not pink and have the dire shrinkage on the magnetic track.  I think that was what happened to the jedi print someone once offered, since the seller claimed the audio was out of sync with the picture.  As far as i know the only person who has claimed to have seen a pristine 70mm print of star wars in recent years was Steve Hoffman, the guy who did the initial restoration of raiders of the lost ark soundtrack for DCC classics.  Another restoration was recently done by a different record company without his involvement.

Certain films i wish i could see in a restored 70mm theatrical print, are Star Trek II the wrath of khan, Star Trek the motion picture. Raiders of the lost ark, star wars, empire strikes back, and return of the jedi, superman.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

I think the original version was on TCM in the nineties when recording equipment was not very good.  I caught only the end of the movie and did not tape it with my vcr, who cares since laserdisc is better anyways.  Also it was a letterbox version not anamorphic.  They also showed the student version as a bonus which i missed and was mad about it at the time.

Idea & Request: Kiki's Delivery Service Streamline/Carl Macek English dub
Time

The Laputa dub is on region 2, same as totoro.

The old kiki dub was a jal airlines one not done by streamline though released through them in the US in theaters i think. Same with Laputa.  Totoro definitively is a streamline dub, or the fox dub.

Yes the track is in mono on the laserdisc in the right channel i believe while the japan is on the left, really not the best idea.  The DVD releases are at least free of the noise and crosstalk.  It would have been great if they were on seperate audio channels instead of spilt on a single one where the stereo track would traditionally go.

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time

I also once saw the special longer version on ebay in 16mm from a tv print.

Though i did not bid because i don't have the equipment to screen it and it was severely faded to pink, thanks to eastman stock.

This film print is very rare kind of like the pan and scanned Superman longer version, or superman II.  You hardly ever see prints for those show up.
