RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)

Now we just need someone to do a proper ANH recon ...

I agree i have waited for someone to do a fan reconstruction of star wars after seeing what was possible with Adywan's revisited.  I was completely depressed by the fact the vintage edit never came to be.

Since Adywan is not available i wonder who will do star wars, i am sure people want empire revisited than they want to see the real movies restored since they have seen them hundreds of times.

I have got the Gout fanamorphic someplace on disc but making it resized for anamorphic does not make the source any better.

It is actually worse because it is compressed for single layer.

I quickly found and inserted all of the wipes and fades I could find, along with an additional SE change (another extended shot).

Very interesting, thanks for doing that.

About Raiders, I vaguely recall that the 90s laserdisc had a few redone sound effects that were then reverted back to the original for the dvd. (In particular, the sound when Indy drops the staff into the map room)

I think that the foley was different on the 35mm for raiders this difference is heard on the CAV analog laserdisc.

The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)
Time

If i remember correctly Adywan did a fan restore of the Phantom Menace theatrical cut.  Wonder if anyone still has that.

Forgive me for asking but what is the diff between the Adywan Empire reconstruction, the paulisdead vintage empire edition and the ocpmovie version.  Other than being Adywan quality.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

If I may be so bold, I don't think the THX 1138 "Director's Cut" is nearly as offensive as the Star Wars and Jedi SE's.  It's more on par with the 1997 SE of Empire, which never bothered me all that much.  My only major problem with the THX DC is the CG monkey things at the end.

However, I still prefer the pre-DC cut, myself.  I've never seen the true "theatrical" cut, though.  Has anyone here seen it?

Nope.  Existing prints for the Warner studio cut are very hard to come by, most have the excised scenes restored from a re-release i think that came out after the success of star wars?

Other than the original images and color timing, the best thing in my opinion about the original version is the Walter Murch mono mix.

He did not supervise the 5.1 for the bad cgi version.

Same problem with American Graffiti on the odd chance you come across a film print, itis either the intended version or the studio cut the prints are all red or pink.

The thing is even though the DVD's are better quality like the star wars special edition 2004 they don't make a good source to make a fan restored version by the virtue of the different color timing, and DVNR that removed a lot of the grainyness that was intended from the techniscope film.

They did the same horrible thing on the sergio leone spaghetti western trilogy they all but erased the grain structure from a fistful of dollars on the American release, the italian release is pretty much unaffected and came from a different source.

I wanted to point something out, i know it is nitpicking but the japan special collection for star wars the first film came out in 1986.  Thought you might want to know if it is important to have correct information.  I can see why you made the mistake however as the 1989 us release came from the same master, just was in CLV not CAV.

Discussion: What am I up against trying to find a first edition Star Wars paperback?
Time

I have the 1976 release.  With the Mcquarrie cover signed by Alan Dean Foster.  Would have to search for it and dig it out.

There are no differences in the text between the editions, as far as i know.

The copy i have is worn.  It is not in unread condition.  And yet the binding is intact unlike my first edition return of the jedi the illustrated edition, or warped like my empire strikes back illustrated first edition.

Not sure but i don't think this is the first pal laserdisc preservation on these boards for the special edition.

I think i have discs from some person who did a capture.

I will have to dig them out and see.  I know they were done a few years back so the quality is probably not as good as yours.

*Edit to post.  The Grinder edition of star wars i have was the oot PAL.

So i guess your transfer is the first PAL special edition laserdisc capture as far as i know. The PAL DVB G'kar is not laserdisc so does not count in this equation.

Are we sure he's not suggesting that we'll only get a decent OOT release after Lucas passes away?

If that's the case, I don't want it. I don't care how passionate I am about the films, I don't want a man to have to DIE for me to get them. In any case, I'm sure Lucas' will shall ensure they will be gone long after he is in any case.

Let me chime in and say i don't want George to die either, as much as he has suppressed the oot, i have no doubt some oot fans would shed real tears if that happened.

And you know their would be a media circus, with fans of all kinds coming out in tribute.

Mr. Lucas deserves the finest praise for creating star wars and inspiring three generations of young people.

I don't hate the man, but i find his treatment of a set of beloved films absurd and frankly bizarre.  You create something that many millions of people love and then say sorry you cannot watch that anymore.

You have to know just how envious sci fi and fantasy writers and artists are of George's creation, it was like lightning captured in a bottle.  They fact he could not conjure it a second time, means he is an imperfect being like the rest of humanity, and all other artists who fail to top their first best works.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

The transfer for Evil Dead looks phenomenal.  But the Army of Darkness transfer had too much dvnr and the actors faces looked like plastic.

I hope for a new master.  It is obvious they used the previous HD master from the DVD release that already had the digital video noise reduction applied.

That is what i cannot stand when studios dump HD masters to blu ray disc, sometimes as in the case with star trek 6 the HD master was from technology locked into the year 2001.  Talk about a craptastic transfer.  Good enough for DVD, blu ray forgot it the edge enhancement is the pits.

Mike G.'s style is kind of Like John Williams in Star Trek 2009, the composer.  Even he has claimed a link to Williams Star Wars music, much like The Incredibles was a nod to Barry and Shiffrin.

Surprisingly he is doing the music for star tours II.

My thoughts on the State of O-T dot com.
Time

Really never noticed it of course i have never seen the special edition DVD lately or the HD on tv.

Was this to hide the fact he had aged 3 years in between Empire and Jedi?

I know in the story it is something like 5 months after.

And i have not watched Jedi at all lately really or Empire.  I find i like the first film better over all with its carefree spirit.

Plus there are no Retcons if you just watch star wars.  Luke is not Vader's Son. Leia is not Luke's sister, Obi Wan is not both a jerk and a pathological liar of the first magnitude.

Too bad it also happens to be the worst transfer in the gout trilogy.  As the master IP was used one to many times to strike prints, being the most popular of the three films.
